    ☼Bi-weekly DF Questions Thread☼

    Posted: 15 Jul 2021 05:09 PM PDT

Ask about anything related to Dwarf Fortress - including the game, utilities, bugs, problems you're having, mods, etc. You will get fast and friendly responses in this thread.

Read the sidebar before posting! It has information on a range of game packages for new players, and links to all the best tutorials and quick-start guides. If you have read it and that hasn't helped, mention that!

You should also take five minutes to search the wiki - if tutorials or the quickstart guide can't help, it usually has the information you're after. You can find the previous questions thread here.

If you can answer questions, please sort by new and lend a hand - linking to a helpful resource (eg wiki page) is fine.

    First Dragon Attack

    Posted: 16 Jul 2021 05:19 AM PDT

So I just had a Dragon attack me in Dwarf Fortress. I thought I had a chance because, how bad can a dragon be? I got some axe-dwarfs, I might be able to handle it with some losses.

This thing landed in my forest and unleashed utter hellfire that was hot enough to melt a gigantic crater in the ground as if the Statue of Liberty just did an Olympic dive into the Earth from orbit. At this point I just accept I'm screwed, and the dragon begins marching toward my front gate.

And then, one of the trees the dragon lit on fire collapses on the dragon's head and it instantly dies.

List of tasks left before the Steam update is ready.

    Posted: 16 Jul 2021 08:02 AM PDT

So this list has been "endorsed" by Tarn in a recent interview with /u/BlindiRL (and also a recent FotF response) as pretty much all the tasks left to do before the Steam/Itch release is ready:

    • Screens/UI for the manager (most of this is complete already)

    • Workshop profiles

    • Civilizations screen (tileset for the world map is already created)

    • Military & squads (significant reworks to the UX planned here, and also some bugfixes)

    • Other tabs/submenus in the new info hub

    • Mine-cart hauling routes

    • Burrows

    • [q,t,k,v] updated/combined into a single clicking/looking command (some progress made already)

    • Embark screen (tileset for the world map is already created)

    • Retooling worldgen so that you aren't dumped back into the title screen (tileset for the world map is already created)

    • Implementing the already created sprite-work into their respective places in the game (already lots of this in place obviously, but some remains still)

    • Remaining graphics (procgen creatures, menu icons etc) must be drawn by artists, and then implemented

    • Adventure mode UI (won't take as long as Fort mode)

    • Legends mode (won't take long as Fort mode)

    • Some kind of tutorialization (most likely ingame popups rather than handmade "tutorial worlds")

    • Basic Steam workshop support

    • Steam Achievements

    • Misc technical changes for supporting the Steam/Itch platforms in general

    • Getting the Classic/ASCII version working; same UI, it's just a matter of telling the game to use specific ASCII tiles instead of "graphical" tiles, which shouldn't take long

The above list has 19 things in it, though most of them have "sub-tasks" implied in them, so it's not literally 19 things. Some of these tasks will take longer than others to do. Some small bits and pieces may have been forgotten from this list, but nothing big presumably.

And as for a date estimate, he says if he gets really lucky and everything goes smoothly, with no unexpected roadblocks in development, it could be out this year, but will most likely be in 2022 (probably no later than Q3).

As of today (16th July), there are 25 weeks (169 days) left in 2021, and 59 weeks (412 days) from now until Autumn 2022.

Just can't compete with a forest titan...

My 6th fortress, and 1st migrant wave.... Every single of these 4 is legendary. Oh and I'm already in love with the game.

[Adventure Mode] Not sure if this is a widely known bug, but several times now I've been ambushed by livestock that fall to their deaths from the sky.

Portable DF: Steam Deck and Steam DF

    Posted: 16 Jul 2021 08:08 AM PDT

    Steam Deck: https://www.steamdeck.com/en/hardware

Does anyone have any idea whether the newly announced Steam Deck would work with the Steam release of Dwarf Fortress? I'm wondering if these new menus would be controller friendly.

If so, this could be huge for a portable DF. Also brings up questions on how well the Deck could run DF.

Sorry for the weird title. Post gets removed if it's phrased as a question.

Suya's Silence - a Gladiator Tournament VI story.

    Posted: 15 Jul 2021 01:02 PM PDT

(this is a story about my gladiator Suya, pictured here)

The strange, bronze-helmed ostrich woman was an enigma. She hadn't said a word to most of the arena-goers, and those she had spoken to could not understand the strange, gutteral language she mumbled in. She just kept to herself, practicing her jabs with her massive pike, and always, always, keeping her head upright. Her face on the bracket interested a few dwarves around the fortress, as ostrich people weren't a sight many were familiar with.

In particular, it interested Ral Samamthîkut, a young dwarven scribe. He remembered a book that he had made a copy of, titled "Dunes of Bronze". This book entailed a dwarf explorer, he couldn't remember her name, exploring a desert far to the east, where a town of bronze-age ostrich men had made their home. The explorer was saved from dehydration by these people, sheltered in their home, learned to speak their language, and eventually left them to return to the fortress with her findings. Ral rubbed his head. He needed to find that book.

So the days went by. Suya quietly practiced her hours away in her quarters, whilst Ral scoured the libraries of the fortress, from Misttarkel to Talulad. Ral wasn't there to notice, though, that on the night before Suya's first battle, among the new visitors at the fortress gate, was an ostrich man wearing a bronze earring.
