Even today, the Myth and Magic Update still has me hyped. Posted: 17 Jul 2021 08:40 AM PDT I know it's going to still be years and years away, but since I'm back into Dwarf Fortress -- reading the Tarn interviews and watching his 'Myth Generator' still gets me pumped. If he can get it working, Dwarf Fortress will most likely have the most complex myth and magic system ever. When I was watching/reading the Myth Generator from this video, I loved the magic system that was introduced. Or... magic with consequences. How, in some worlds, magic may be easy to use and everywhere, while in others... magic is a rarity and taxing on the body. Just some examples, "If concentration is broken, firestorms ignite near the user." Or you can become a plant, but you must sing and perform a ritual. If you miscast, you could lose your identity or become 'faded'. Or that you could harness 'remnants of creation' like 'cosmic egg' fragments and such. Or that, for teleportation, half of your blood will be zapped from your body upon enactment and you'll feel out of it. Or even things like travelling between dimensions, portals, (or, if he can get it to work, TIME TRAVEL). Perhaps we could even play in the afterlife if our adventurer dies (since an afterlife is supposed to be added). Even the possibility (if you set your parameters high enough) that the world that is generated won't feature dwarves, humans, or elves -- but proc generated creatures and worlds that looks like an acid trip. Magic systems like that -- as in Tarn's philosophy is not just little XP or mana icons -- but magic that actually will affect you. There's no telling what he'll cook up when he actually works on adding procedural magic and myth systems. All of this will make the world feel more alive and actual 'fantasy' with Gods interacting with their creations, and wars fought with magic. I really don't care about graphics, I think ASCII actually adds to everything. Plus, it keeps it simple while more FEATURES can be added. Unlike modern games which feature graphics over gameplay and content. [link] [comments]

+ Dwarf Fortress Labor Survey + Posted: 17 Jul 2021 10:21 AM PDT How do you manage your dwarf labor roles? Here's an (unofficial) chance to vent your frustrations or sing the praises of job assignments in fortress mode. This anonymous 6-question survey wants to hear what you have to say about labor assignments in order improve the experience. Results will be posted to r/dwarffortress. [link] [comments]
