One-off Stream this Friday night; a really cool embark I found Posted: 14 Jul 2021 11:27 AM PDT Greetings all. This will be my first serious Fortress since the most recent stress changes. The site I found is really freaking cool (read: !FUN!), if I do say so myself, and I thought to share with you. Definitely not a tutorial, I am playing to win™. My game is slightly modded; nothing major, just an expansion of features like civs and weapons. I'm planning to start at 1800/6:00pm/GMT-6 Central Daylight Time ; https://www.twitch.tv/zaviersaintcloud Hope to see you there! [link] [comments] | ||

Patty dreams of rain (Tournament story) Posted: 14 Jul 2021 03:59 AM PDT The City was unlike anything Patty had ever seen; the elves never built anything like it, it's dark obsidian buildings and strange priests of more species than Patty was even aware of existing. Even here, though, with it's diverse array of citizenry, from beast-men to humans and almost everything in between, Patty was given strange looks. Her understanding of the local language was remarkable given how little time she had to prepare for her journey, but she got only puzzled stares and polite frowns when she denied that she was a 'gorilla-woman' to the guards she met when she arrived. The Sasquatch were not a warlike people; they had no nations and their mark in history was small. When a population grew too large or prosperous, parts of the tribe simply moved elsewhere; that is their way. Conflict over anything was not their way, and it takes creatures such as resource-hungry Dwarves to force direct encounters and shows of force. Few Sasquatch, in particular, ever risked throwing their lives away like Patty; but, Patty has her reasons. The Sasquatch, numbering several dozen tribes in total, each with their own languages, cultures, and beliefs; Patty's tribe, made of up two hundred or so members, a vast nation to the Sasquatch, believed in many things and had many secret arts, such as how to weave a proper bed from leaves and twigs and how to alert the other creatures of the forest of your existence while leaving those not native to the wilderness unaware of your presence. So many secrets, from stories to legends to sacred wisdom, and Patty learned very little of it. Patty left before she became a adult, in which she would have undergone the proper ceremonies and learned the arts she would need to teach the the next generations for many years. Instead, Patty roved out in search of adventure; specifically, she scared the ever living daylights out of some Elven campers and then decided to follow them to the village they were from. Through translators, Patty was able to find a curious place in the village; the Elves were more than happy to treat a 'honored guest' like herself, and she earned her keep by preforming simple tasks of hard labor. In this, however, she quickly found herself discontented, and she moved on, further into so-called 'civilized' lands. Despite that, she remembered the fundamental belief of the Sasquatch; the nature of the world is that of random cycles, that of myths and legends, and what has happened will happen again. With the present unimportant and the past a thing that exists only to provide context to the present, it is the future the Sasquatch live in, with all major tasks such as food gathering and nest building based on that belief. Patty, unlike almost all other Sasquatch, does not believe in her personal future. It is not that she wishes to die, but rather she has reached a logical conclusion to her previous actions, from leaving her tribe and spending the next several years doing nothing of importance. A death in the tournament, accordingly, would merely be a expression of that logic; she decided to leave the valleys and forests for the lure of civilization, and she has now found herself pursuing a death in a blood-soaked arena. If she survived, however, than it would be proof to herself that she could move on from her youthful experiment for a brighter future. Patty, accordingly, was surprised to learn that her request to fight in the arena came with a condition; a battle royale, a opening ceremony consisting first of the largest of the other individuals in the blood-contest and then of the smallest, for the entertainment of the masses. The match would start in no less than a week. Patty found herself in a strange city in a strange land, one managed by priests of the blood god. While all the gladiators had the option to sleep in barracks or given vouchers to stay at local inns and taverns, Patty did not find the idea of sleeping inside a building for the first time of her life to be a pleasant one, and set out to find appropriate shelter, which came in the form of a friendly elven household who had heard of her existence from a relative and gave her the option to sleep in their garden. With them, she arranged a plan to have her body returned to nature on the likelyhood that she perished; while her blood was regretfully to be claimed by the stone of the arena, her body would be buried in a secret place and seeds would be sprinkled upon it, so that it would be reclaimed in full and she would give life and shelter to creatures. In that garden, Patty, restless, mostly slept and ate and dreamed. She was amazed by the creatures that had gathered to this land to kill themselves; beast men of every kind, from strange blind salamander-men to bird folk to cat women and queer insect creatures, all with the same drives and goals as her. The most intriguing to her was that of the moose-man; to think, that other creatures as large as her people existed! With those horns, he towered over even her, and to think one or the other would have to live made her extraordinarily sad, although she made a point to not know the names of those she would be fighting until after the battle was over, if she lived. To know a individuals name is to lay claim to a piece of their souls, and she did not wish to intrude on what little time they all had left. For her meals, Patty ate fruits and nuts; the only meat she had ever tasted was that of clam, harvested fresh, and salmon, those that die after spawning. Meat was taboo of all kinds; only the yeti indulge in killing animals for their meat alone. It was a meal of berries and other fruits that she had made for herself in the elven garden, on a bed of leaves made more crudely than any self-respecting adult of her tribe would lay claim to making. Her one respite and only real vice she allowed herself involved the youngest of the elves, a young man of perhaps two hundred years of age, and the stash of a certain uncommon leaf known for it's narcotic properties he had hidden in a location he likely thought was secure. She smelled it instantly, and after a quick exchange of funds she found herself in the possession of the entire case of leaves, which she chewed with vigor as she thought. Patty watched the stars, and wished to smell fresh rain at least once more before her idiot death drive resolved itself. [link] [comments] | ||
[Tournament Character] Mrs. Robinson's Snack of Love, Pt. 1 Posted: 13 Jul 2021 11:11 PM PDT A match was struck in a dark room. An iron helm and spear rested on the table nearby, glinting in the dim light. A hand approached the flame out of the darkness. In its grasp the tip of a cigarette glowed bright as the sound of someone inhaling pierced the still air. The matched then descended to a lantern beside a bed. The room was illuminated. Mrs. Robinson, the cougarwoman stood with one leg up on her birch wood throne. Upon the throne was an image of a buffalo in limestone. Her red, cave spider silk dress sparkled in the lantern's light. "Get out," she growled out of the side of her mouth. "But, baby..." a young dwarf sat up in a fine bed, "You said you loved me." "I don't got time for love, kid." She blew a cloud of smoke in his direction as she pulled on one of her cougar leather thigh high boots. She smiled as she remembered the last cougar woman who got in her way. Demi Moore. The young dwarf had already left before she had got on the second boot. She flicked a bit of ash onto the floor and picked up a scroll on the table. "Hmm..." She hummed. Plenty of options on the menu. This inn wasn't half bad. "The finely minced dog intestine?" She said out loud. No. "The well-prepared raw mussel roast?" Hmm. Maybe. She was startled by a knock at the door. Three sharp raps. A muffled voice came from the other side. "Uh, miss?" "Mrs." she replied with a hiss. She put out her cigarette in a half empty mug of wine. It was cowbone and it menaced with spikes of cowbone. She muttered under her breath. "Armok, rest his soul. I'll never love again." A paper was shoved through the gap under the door. It was the bracket for the tournament. Truth is she didn't want to even look. She stared at the menu for a few more moments before walking over to the door. Mrs. Robinson bent over and picked up the paper. She kept it turned over as she walked back to her bed. She took a deep breath and sat down. She reached for another mug on the ground. It was peach wine. She took a long drink and closed her eyes. She kept them closed as she flipped over the bracket paper. She look another drink before setting the mug back onto the cold, stone floor. Dwarves really had no idea of comfort. She opened her eyes and scanned for her name. Mrs. Robinson. She found it. She was all smiles as she saw who she had been matched up with. She looked back to the menu. "I guess I'll have the goat." [link] [comments] | ||
[Adventure Mode] Personality values and their corresponding dreams/goals & needs. Posted: 14 Jul 2021 12:00 PM PDT Mods plz don't remove thx. The wiki is often sparse on information (bit too liberal with the "masterwork article" designation, honestly) and searching & navigating the Bay12 forums is even more difficult than Reddit's shitty search function. This is all gathered from a female human demigod outsider beginning their adventures in a "human" bandit camp so as not to have any preconceived cultural values. That shouldn't make a difference on an individual level, I wouldn't think, but it's worth bringing up the possibility that, say, a goblin born in a hillocks controlled by an elven civilization might get different outcomes from the same results compared to a complete blank slate, if not currently than potentially down the line. Values listed from 1 to 7, with 1 being the lowest, "<<<," and 7 being the highest ">>>." As values increase (or decrease), corresponding needs become stronger. All information gathered holds every other value and trait at the median of 4 ( "-" ). It's possible there are results that only originate from esoteric combinations of values & personality traits but brute-forcing that discovery is not feasible. Whether or not any of these values & traits change gameplay in other ways is way outside the scope of this; it's conceivable that a character who's more quick to anger becomes enraged in combat more easily, as an example, but I'm not looking at any of that. One last final note, I don't believe there is any difference between a "dream" and a "goal" so I'm just using "goal" to conserve effort & save time (and for the sake of honesty, I have no evidence for this either way).
---- Here are personality traits, listed in reverse order because it's quicker to scroll through them that way and because the first half dozen or so traits ("hates easily," "loves easily," etc) have no impact on goals or needs, strangely enough.

First wave multi-legendary necromancer citizen (LNP) Posted: 13 Jul 2021 09:27 PM PDT As the title says, on my first wave of migrants, I got a dwarven necromancer with legendary gem cutting, mechanics, student, and reader, as well as high lvl in teacher and writer. In the most recent version of the LNP, what kind of !!FUN!! can I use him for? [link] [comments] | ||
Gary the Cannibalistic Gazelle - Causing a Stir - Part 1 (Dwarf Fortress Tournament VI) Posted: 13 Jul 2021 04:48 PM PDT I've never properly done a story for my characters, so why not give my first story to a Cannibal who doesn't deserve to be thought of as anything more than a horror to society….sounds good to me! Stay tuned for more ———————— It's surprisingly difficult to convince the humble simple minded folk, the bankers and the farmhands, the maidens and mayors to part ways with their precious land to start a Gazelle Bakery empire, even for a good price. For some, it simply sounds outrageous, others, well to them it sounded like murder. Murder?? Who did they think Gary was? Some animal?! His hooves clicked in anger as he held back the instinct to charge his precious nearly woven horns into the next villager to slam the door shut, inches away from Gary's pleading face. "You sir." A shout, shrill and exciting, echoed from behind the Gazelle, who swiftly turned to face the shrivelled dwarf ahead of him. "Are you…the Deer in the bracket? The…" The dwarf looked down at his paper in hand. "The baker??" Gary's face scrunched up in a moment of disgust, a common deer? Deer were BENEATH him, how dare someone compare him to a deer! As Gary raised a hand to interject, the dwarf continued quickly. "I'm Montoya Pilot, a dwarf from the hilltops near here, I'm also an…how to put this…investor in extravagant cuisine, and today is your lucky day….if that…if you're looking for a place to set up your bakery that is…" "WHA?!" Now it was Gary's turn to go up an octave, excitement kicking in, the mere mention of Deer's shifting out of focus, this was his chance. "You…I…you'd help me?" "Why yes?" The dwarf nodded, a happy smile plastered underneath the thick beard. "There's a real demand for Gazelle stock from the Dukes and Earl's around here, apparently something about it is just to their taste…yet we don't have a trusted supplier…that is, unless you want to help a poor fellow out…" "I…yes…please…that would be amazing…what do you need me to do? Where do I sign?" The Gazelle hopped into the air slightly as he bounced over. "No signature necessary my dear friend," Montoya replied, "Prove to me you can defeat the Turtle in that first round of yours and then meet me in the Rose Garden outside of town at dusk, there, we can begin our…our partnership, till then my friend." And with that, just as swiftly as he arrived, the little Dwarf gently dispersed into the crowd lining the street, the pitter patter of his footsteps disappearing, leaving Gary to ponder…his stomach beginning to rumble…he'd need to save his appetite for this Turtle character, he'd never tried turtle pie before. What is your dorf-flow? How do you set up your game and what does the gameplay look like for you? Posted: 13 Jul 2021 01:47 AM PDT Curious as to how people like to play their Fortress. Vanilla? Mods? Preferred embark type and so on. What are you proud of ( what are you embarrassed of )? I know there's the Fortress Friday thread but wondering about how the whole default lifespan of the game looks for you ( if you have a default anyway ). I like to start playing in a very young world ( 100 years tops ) as I prefer to see the history unfold rather than read about it. I use LNP ( Phoebus, Announcement Window, Dwarf Therapist, Soundsense RS ). I like to be a bit adventurous with the embark unless I really want to make a durable fortress somewhere and thus I try to make sure I have water and trees available. I use Legends Viewer to choose an area that would ( kinda ) make sense to expand into in RP terms. I don't remember ever embarking in Haunted though since that always seemed like a bit too much of a kick in the face from the get go ( though right now I'm feeling like next fort I start may be that ). Sometimes I want to do some megaproject like build a massive bridge to connect islands or something. I usually do use my own fort design for Quickfort that I've been kinda polishing for the past few years. Especially like my living pods design that are a couple of levels of this: https://imgur.com/a/C4MEoTa - I need to learn to do blueprints though because manually setting all the furniture is tedious... one day... Kinda thinking of making a modular fort design at some point. I try to aim for a sweet spot between optimized and still interesting looking ( leaning towards interesting ). I have a bad habit of doing a bit too much way too early which leads to cluttering. I always want my fort to "look nice" over things such as safety which has more than once led to the demise of my poor dwarves as I was too busy setting up a cool hallway over making sure drinks are being produced and trap room is functioning. Usually I manage to set up defenses well enough though. Unless I have issues with water/trees I wait for a good while before looking for caverns. Have some soldiers and hunters. I'm lazy about pumps so I prefer to tunnel down to a water source for a well. I always set up another containment room for Beasts ( that marksdwarves can shoot down into if needed ) that also opens up to the outside so I can release the beast on invaders. The results are usually underwhelming but I did once manage to burn down the map so that was fun. I like to try to get my dwarves to do what they seem like they would like to do. I also give them Stonecrafting as a a hobby if they really want to create a masterwork when they're not crafters ( once they achieve their dream I disable the crafting ). Despite my benevolence my dwarves tend to end up traumatized due to rotting friends that aren't getting buried because I'm too busy crafting statues or something. I do give nice quarters to any nobles even if they don't need them because it's fun. If I really feel up to it ( and feel confident they aren't going to die within a year ) I might even customize their rooms to their preferences. If my fort gets big, I also relieve Soldiers/Hunters that are missing limbs and make them Veterans ( Custom profession where it's all about what they want to do ). They get their own nice quarters too, and tombs. I also like to make a glass greenhouse on the topside that is only accessed from the inside of the fort. I need to figure out how to make it a perfect dome though. If my Fort survives to the point where it's "ready" ( as in I'm just waiting for a new trade caravan or try to come up with megaprojects ), I retire it and start a new one but usually, eventually some beast slips through my defenses or I make some other critical error. Or I take a risk with something and that never, ever, EVER pays off. [link] [comments] | ||
Is Dwarf Fortress's difficulty overly exaggerated by the memes, medias and some YouTube videos? Posted: 12 Jul 2021 08:33 PM PDT Or is it just me who finds DF pretty easy to figure out? I mean there is a bunch of tutorials online. plus you can press shift+? for help. [link] [comments] |
