Libraries are a heavily exploitable mechainc in adventure mode.

While playing adventure mode I have noticed that the "preserver of knowledge" reputation is really easy to exploit. And by easy I mean EXTREMEY EASY. All you need is a bunch of writing materials, food and drink (that is pretty obvious, you do not wan't to starve while writing books) and some skill in writing. What you basiclly have to do is write letters and poems (those boosted the reputation the most for me) and tell the scholars about it. After doing this with all of the library's writing materials, placing the books in the library and telling all the scholars about it everyone will admire you as a if you were some kind of legendary hero. I did not try this with the learnable book types (except for dialogues and dictionaries that did not work for me\)).

Another exploit here is related to the library book fame mechanic. Once a year a library chooses a book that will become famous all around the civilization it is in. If you manage to put a couple\*) necromancy books in a library in adventurer mode you raise the chance of the "secrets of life and death" to spread causing potential fun.

And do not forget about this:

Those are not all of the positive thoughts that the reading generated.

    * Some types of books are boosting the reputation more on placement. Letters and poems worked the best for me.

** And by that I mean a lot

    Steam update progress list.

    Posted: 06 May 2021 10:16 AM PDT

Referring to this thread and the interview:

And also tidbits from elsewhere, what's left is apparently:

    • Screens/UI for the manager (integrated with the autolabor stuff he has already)

    • Unit job list

    • Workshop profiles

    • Civilizations screen (tileset for the world map is already created)

    • Military & squads

    • Mine-cart hauling routes

    • Burrows

    • [q,t,k,v] updated/combined into a single clicking/looking command (some progress made already)

    • Embark screen (tileset for the world map is already created)

    • Retooling worldgen so that you aren't dumped back into the title screen (tileset for the world map is already created)

    • Adventure mode (much of the interface won't carry over, but the graphics all will)

    • Legends mode (should be very quick apparently)

    • Implementing the already created sprite-work into their respective places in the game (already lots of this in place obviously, but not sure how much; this happens alongside other tasks and doesn't take long)

    • Graphics for procgen creatures

    • Steam workshop support

    • Misc technical Steam support stuff

Tarn said at the time of that interview (Feb 12th, about 12 weeks ago) that "this year is still fair" as a release date estimate, and since then he has done at least this (can't know what else he's doing in the background):

    • The 25 non-workshop building UI's (beds, chains, cages, statues, etc) and the the rework of those buildings (ie them using zones)
    • Levers
    • Trading screens/trade depos
    • Basic automatic labor assignment implemented (but it still needs refinement)

There are 34 weeks left in 2021 right now.

Steam Community Update 6 May 2021: "New Trade Depot + Animals and Wagons"

    Posted: 06 May 2021 10:51 AM PDT

None of my dwarves are able to work? I'm still fairly new, but something is happening, as all of my dwarves are looking for a bucket? I tried to include as much info as possible.

All artefacts in Legends are listed as Unknown Types

    Posted: 06 May 2021 10:33 AM PDT

When I export my legends save to Legends viewer and find the artefacts tab, all the artefacts are listed as Unknown, meaning I can't plan artefacts to try and get in adventure mode because I could be trying to take a chair or a bucket. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

    Forced Wagon Entrance - video

    Posted: 05 May 2021 06:22 PM PDT

I finally got around to recording a wagon spawning inside my tunnels where I force them to enter. You can see some of the single merchants sneaking over to my backdoor which is a single wide tunnel but much shorter.

Distractions and how to deal with them

    Posted: 05 May 2021 12:31 PM PDT

So, as a new dwarf fortress player you will often hear the wisdom, that you should try to have as few idlers as possible to prevent unwanted social bonds. In the current version this is pretty much the opposite of what you should do. The focus system allows for pretty big buffs (up to 140%) and debuffs (up to 79%) to the overall working efficiency of a dwarf. To gain Focus he must perform certain actions that would more often than not cause severe micromanagement like switching your workers and soliders every year or so, so that they arent bored with their work. Unfortunatly, the common stonecrafter will not visit taverns and temples when working on an (persumably endless) order of stone crafts. An easy solution for this mechanic I found is to build a general temple and tavern and make a burrow around them, food stockpiles and sleeping halls and turn it on every year or two for 14 days up to a month. This "dwarfen vacation" will get about 90% of your population up to normal focus and work efficiency.
