Read the sidebar before posting! It has information on a range of game packages for new players, and links to all the best tutorials and quick-start guides. If you have read it and that hasn't helped, mention that! You should also take five minutes to search the wiki - if tutorials or the quickstart guide can't help, it usually has the information you're after. You can find the previous questions thread here. | Times when name generation is unironically great Posted: 15 Jan 2021 12:07 AM PST I have a hate-love relationship with Dwarf Fortress names, what with names like "The Fortress Boatmurdered" and a deity with the second name "Saveddefense", but some names are just Tolkien-worthy, absolutely great sounding. My favourite names right now are:

First one of these wretched spiders kill the Bladestorm, and now you're telling me there's a dragon at the gates!" "Yes, your grace. From what the hunter said, it seems to be Tul Giltvault, closing in from the East. Apparently, the rumor stating she died a few years ago was a lie. The hunter also tried warning the elves at the depot, but it seems they didn't take him seriously." "Stupid tree-huggers... We won't have time to bring the militia on the surface, they were busy with that eight legged freak. We'll have to rely on our traps... and our luck. Tell everyone to go to the dining room! The squads will try to reach the farm's levels." "Aye! I'll be spreading your orders!" The fortress was in turmoil. All around her, the baroness could see terror, despair and horror. Wordlessly, she started her duty. Here, there were some citizens too scared to move. She guided them to safety. There, some metalsmith wanted to finish her gauntlets. She scolded her and made her join the others. Meanwhile, on the surface, the elves were laughing. "A dragon! As if they were real!" one said. "They were probably trying to scare us so that they wouldn't have to pay!" said another. Suddenly, they saw a tree fall, just outside the walls. "These barbarians must be chopping for some extra wood!" said the caravan's swordself. "I'll show you what I think of that!" But instead of a dwarf, from within the drawbridge's opening, an enormous reptilian head appeared. The swordself felt the blood drain from his face as the two black pinpricks stared at him. Suddenly, the enormous maw opened, and his vision filled with white. The meeting hall was eerily silent. The only noise that could be heard came from the surface. The screams were heard first, but they shut down quickly, and so did the animal cries as the beast massacred them. A roar and two crashes indicated the fate of the workshops on the surface. Then, the dragon paused shortly. Was it all it could do in the fortress? No, it saw a hole in the ground. All in the dining room gasped in horror as the steps started once again, and grew loud... ... until suddenly, a clicking and a metallic sound, followed by a deafening roar. The surface had quieted. Dodok ordered for the peasants to stay safe while she climbed the stairs. It is then that, at the end of the entrance corridor, she saw it. The trap had worked on a wing and prayer, the dragon had been distracted by a cat just long enough to be captured. The beast, she had to admit, was magnificient. Four horns orned her head, itself encrusted by the black jewels of her eyes. Her scales were peridot green, her expression stern, her traits mighty. She stayed immobile for a few seconds before Bomrek, the commander, interrupted her reverie. "So we have dragon, now. What should we do with it?" "That... is a very good question." | Posted: 14 Jan 2021 05:26 AM PST Seven brave dwarf decided, they will made the biggest fortress in the history. They spent years to study the dwarf history, to not made the same mistakes as their ancestors. Became masters in different professions. Carefully prepared the materials which they will bring to this journey. Then carefully select the place where this fortress will emerge. When they arrived, they could not believe their eyes, the mountain side covered with gold ore, they think, this is a good sign, an approval from the gods, a bless. Quickly they carve in to the mountain, establish the farms, workshops, furnaces and start to mine out the gold. The wealth was limitless, golden thrones, golden tables, everything was made from gold. There were no difference between dwarfs, not in life or after, all of them has their own tombs designated when they born, golden sarcophagus, golden doors and golden statues guard the tranquility. Caravans like to visit this place, they were able to sell almost everything, deals were generous. The mayor ordered a great throne room, the jewel of the fortress. Architects were work hard on the plans, once it finished, they showed it to the mayor. Tension was felt in the air.... APPROVED! The whole fortress was excited to work on the great plan. Tunnels and rooms are made. Golden furniture are in production. The great throne room was forming, everything goes according the plan, thrones and tables are in place, production of statues and armor stands are started. SIEGE!!! A horde of goblins may have heard the wealth of this place. And came to check, in a hope they can get those gold bars. Nobles were shocked, they were not prepared for this. Military is only for parades, had no real strength. The fortress was locked, in a hope the attackers will go over time. Screams filled the corridors, everyone was terrified. The enemy breached the throne room, and killed everyone without thinking. Silence in the fortress... Everything is covered in blood, and no hope for those dwarfs to rest in their designed tomb. The great wealth was associated with overconfidence. The attention to details were decreased. The constructions of the throne room was not properly inspected , mistakes were made.
