Ask about anything related to Dwarf Fortress - including the game, utilities, bugs, problems you're having, mods, etc. You will get fast and friendly responses in this thread.

Read the sidebar before posting! It has information on a range of game packages for new players, and links to all the best tutorials and quick-start guides. If you have read it and that hasn't helped, mention that!

You should also take five minutes to search the wiki - if tutorials or the quickstart guide can't help, it usually has the information you're after. You can find the previous questions thread here.

If you can answer questions, please sort by new and lend a hand - linking to a helpful resource (eg wiki page) is fine.

The Wrath of the Ettin Exzas

The Wrath of the Ettin Exzas

On the 11th of Obsidian 134, a day like any other. Fishers complaining about being outside and rained on even though they chose the job they do, miners killing Crundles in the mines, and the Tavern erupting with alcohol and dance. My military squads called the "Berserkers" and "Roughnecks" were out bullying a Kobold Fort for loot. Suddenly, my undefended Dwarven home had an unexpected visitor.

    Exzas Snexazosto Stasnaeru

This monstrous Ettin climbed over the mountains and began devouring the wildlife. My Dwarves fearing for their lives called upon the Civilian Guard to defend the gate with pitchforks and butcher knives.

Now the Mayor, Kogsak Konosduthnur, was preparing her people for the carnivorous beast roaming the surface. If the Ettin came in, Kogsak was ready to lock down the entire fortress to save her people.

After the successful raid, my military commander, Datan Sholiddodok, was surprised to see a mass gaggle of Dwarves shaking in fear.

    Raid of Doomriddle (Kobold Fort)

Before calming down the populace, she and her men dropped off the loot, and drank a quick pint of ale. Datan turned to Kogsak and boasted, "You won't need a lock down until I stop breathing sis." The Berserkers and Roughnecks rushed to the surface to face towering Ettin, Exzas.

They swarmed him like flies to butter, and some dwarves were so egger to get into the fight they forgot to grab ammo for their crossbows. Those without traditional weapons turned to more unconventional means of warfare.

    Fighting Begins

The Ettin, Exzas, put up a strong fight injuring a couple dwarves in the first minutes of fighting. Datan continued to press on inspiring her men. Finally after a gruesome hour, the Ettin's will began to crumble to dust. He cried out for help before slipping into unconsciousness.

    Ettin Collapses

The sight of a terrific foe falling to the Earth filled the Dwarves with bloody rage! They stabbed, kicked, punched, and bashed the Ettin for what felt like a joyous eternity... When an unrecognizable mass of tissue, guts, and blood sat in front of Datan the deed was done.

The warriors returned to their mountain home to be welcomed with barrels full of plump helmets and ale. The perfect treat for a job well done. The Fortress of Kibalis will live on to fight another day.

I'll say, it must be said... ELVES ARE USEFUL ON EVIL EMBARKS!

I don't like to admit it, but going out there for wood causes PTSD and they always show up with so much of it.

It feels dirty, but I need those hippy bastards.

Keep in mind that if you have thriving dwarves, disregard this, but I made an extremely evil and dangerous world and the dwarves weren't doing well.

First serious attempt at getting into the game today. Instructions unclear, woodcutter crushed by tree.

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 02:17 PM PST

I'm in a heavily forested area, right next to some filthy elves. My diligent woodcutter was going about his business when he was suddenly crushed by falling logs.

He was knocked unconscious and his leg was "mangled" (the game's term). I've never got the point where I've had to worry about injuries before, so I built my first hospital and worked out how to tell people to drag him off.

Felt pretty good about getting him to the "hospital" (an empty room with a post it on the door saying hospital). Then he got restless and left the fort, I don't think he could walk at that point, and proceeded to chop down another tree.

I assume he did this out of spite and I love him for it.

So yeah, my first impressions have been good! I've never got this far before (Lazy Newb Pack but still), two migrant waves, a few offices and a bunch of bedrooms.

I really wanted to turn some excess kittens into mittens but I found out you can't do that any more :(

This is just a thank you to the community for providing so many resources and tools as well as constant amusement through great stories. Thought I'd begin giving back to that pool of "oh wow, that can happen?" moments. I hope there's many more to come!

Are certain forgotten beats bigger than others or something

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 05:27 PM PST

I've seen that certain ones like mammoth or elephant based ones tend to be harder to kill than the ones that arent. Aren't they all the same sie though?

Help with my Dwarf Fortress perception.

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 01:37 PM PST

This days I watched a lot of tutorials an ``learned`` how to play. Learned stands for, I know what to do, have a fortress with happy dwarfs, diverse food, drinks, crafts, arts, decorated rooms. But the game seems boring to me, I see other people developing nice stories with complex stuff, but for me the game is just a overly complex city building. I would like to know how to get more involved in the world to really experience it`s procedurally generated wonder, cause now, a world with 250 years or 5 years is the same thing. How to get involved with the world`s history.
