Baby Daycare done Dwarf-style: Put mom in the army!

    Posted: 16 Sep 2020 04:40 PM PDT

I've been raiding the heck out of neighboring villages, trying to build up a nice library and noticed some awesome dwarf behavior I hadn't read about yet. Every time I stationed on of my squads, I noticed one of the little dwarflings hanging out with the troops. Taking a closer look, I found out that one of the soldiers recently popped out the little dwarf-dwarf and he'd been following mom to work... including all of the raids she's been going on.

Yep! Apparently if you have a mom enlisted in the army and send her squad off on missions, young children will go off map with them and participate in the raid. And that's not even the best part of it. Because the missions were actual raids, the whole team has been leveling Ambusher and Hunting, including Urist McJunior! Dwarf Therapist doesn't show him as having any kills yet, but as this 6 month old is already one of my fort's best Ambushers, it's only a matter of time until he crawls up on some unsuspecting goblin.

After seeing that, I immediately enlisted all of the fort's other moms in the new Baby Daycare squad and send them out constantly raiding. By the time this infant swarm can finally hold their short swords, those gobbos will never see 'em coming. This is baby dwarf daycare done right!

    NOW you clean after yourselves!

    Posted: 16 Sep 2020 06:09 PM PDT

Spent a year and a half waiting and messing so that my dwarves pick up after themselves, logs on the ground, goods scattered about, the works. Put up plenty of stockpiles, even made them generalized so they would accept all of the rubbish, what did the trick?
    Merchants.

Aparently being messy when no one is around is easyer.

By mistake selected for the depot almost everything. Boy how it got cleaned up fast! They never did for the stockpiles!

Imma use this trick more in the future.

    Adventurers vs supersoldier

    Posted: 16 Sep 2020 02:25 PM PDT

Assasination mission: level impossible. I was playing a fortress that progressed smoothly, and sent my 50 dwarf army to raze a elven retreat. However, the army never arrived. After about a season of (traveling) a goblin siege nearly wiped my undefended fort. Since the militia commander was away too, i could not appoint any new squad. So i decided to send out a savior to assasinate the commander to reestablish my militia. Seemed simple right?. The issue lied in the fact, that the commander is a supersoldier. Not only did he manage to level down a giant with a copper hammer ,ALONE, without even getting hit once. But he now wears masterwork gear. This is my third assasination attempt. Im trying to snipe him down with a demigod raven crosbowman, but he blocks every single attack. To make it worse, he has a 49 army following him that was trained for years. How do i either kill him, or solve the (traveling) issue? He is just between my city and the elven forest.

    Trouble on Linux Mint 20 - 'libstdc++.so.6' breaks on CXXABI_1.3.8 and CXXABI_1.3.9

    Posted: 16 Sep 2020 08:16 PM PDT

If you're playing on Linux Mint and recently downloaded a fresh install, you may have issues running the game.

After downloading and executing 'df', I was getting these specific errors:

~/Games/dwarfFortress2/df_linux/libs/libstdc++.so.6: version `CXXABI_1.3.8' not found (required by /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libGLU.so.1)

~/Games/dwarfFortress2/df_linux/libs/libstdc++.so.6: version `CXXABI_1.3.9' not found (required by /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libGLU.so.1)

Interestingly, the Lutris install works without issue. Upon closer inspection, the Lutris install appears to be the same as the install directly from Bay12Games - except 'df_linux/libs/libstdc++.so.6' has been removed.

If you move libstdc++.so.6 from this directory, the game runs again.

I haven't been able to find what this breaks (if it actually breaks anything). I've read elsewhere that playing with LD_LIBRARY_PATH can fix it, but I couldn't get it to work.

Admittedly, this doesn't seem like an actual solution, and I'm sure someone else out there has a better handle on this issue. But for the time being - if you're on Mint and having the same issue, moving 'libgcc_s.so.1' into another folder will let you run the game again.
