    ☼Bi-weekly DF Questions Thread☼

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 05:07 PM PDT

Ask about anything related to Dwarf Fortress - including the game, utilities, bugs, problems you're having, mods, etc. You will get fast and friendly responses in this thread.

Read the sidebar before posting! It has information on a range of game packages for new players, and links to all the best tutorials and quick-start guides. If you have read it and that hasn't helped, mention that!

You should also take five minutes to search the wiki - if tutorials or the quickstart guide can't help, it usually has the information you're after. You can find the previous questions thread here.

If you can answer questions, please sort by new and lend a hand - linking to a helpful resource (eg wiki page) is fine.

This is by far the coolest, most interesting book I've ever seen generated in this game. The depth of this game never ceases to amaze me.

Dwarves wanted some fun and made a "mistake" during construction of water goblinite mine. Unfortunately party pooper build a wall right before the fun begun (this is the main staircase).

    Playing without min-maxing harm reduction

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 03:12 PM PDT

I feel like the standard for playing dwarf fortress is to remove or reduce every source of harm if possible. Prevent all negative thoughts, etc.

Does anyone not play like this like me? I like leaving a lot of the risks and bad things on if they add story and flavor even if there's no strategic benefit to me.

I train my hammerer in hammers and give them the best hammer since a hammering is supposed to be an execution. Giving them an adamantine wiffle ball bat to give a few light painless whacks for committing a capital crime doesn't feel right.

I don't add grazing pets to pastures since pets are meant to follow dwarves around and give them happy thoughts and protect them. A dwarf having their pet starve to death because they didn't feed them due to being caught up in work feels a lot more interesting to me than a dwarf never seeing their pet because its locked in a room so they don't get upset if it dies.

Also if there are never any drunken brawls in my tavern then that means I haven't added enough tavernkeeps.

If anyone has anything else they do like this let me know. But I dunno sometimes I feel like harm and unhappy thoughts are avoided way more than they need to be. I don't see the problem with risking the occasional tantrum, injury, or dead dwarf for the sake of keeping things true to the game and interesting.
