YSK that the [OUTSIDER_CONTROLLABLE] tag appears to work on almost every creature in the game.

    Posted: 12 Aug 2020 11:04 PM PDT

Here are the results of some of my screwing around experiments.

    Fairy

    • Can talk and fight despite being classified as 'vermin'.
    • Can grasp, which means they can climb, hold objects, and wield weapons. Though, these are all useless due to the next three bullets.
    • Can fly (despite technically not having any 'lacy wings').
    • So incredibly weak that just picking up a pebble will reduce their walk speed to 0.099, even with superior strength.
    • Unarmed attacks only ever cause light bruising and 'pulling', and are easily deflected by cloth clothing, even with superior strength. I don't know if you'd have any luck with maxed stats and an adamantine weapon, but their speed while holding any object is so incredibly slow that it's still not practical.
    • I started in an elven forest retreat, so I didn't get the chance to test out any doors. My prediction is that they won't be able to open them since there's no normal gameplay reason to give vermin the door-opening tag anyway.

    Minotaur

    • They play almost completely normally, almost. They can talk, grasp, open doors, and have no debilitating quirks aside from the fact that every civilized person who sees you will irreversibly aggro to 'No Quarter' and either run or try to kill you.
    • Very strong, tough, and comes with several natural skills.

    Cat

    • Can't talk, can't grasp, and can't open doors.
    • Creatures with the ability to do so will pet you on occasion.
    • Ethics/personality needs are disabled, probably due to cats not being 'intelligent'.
    • Default movement speed is 'trot' instead of 'walk' due to them being quadruped.
    • Can actually do moderate damage to an average human as a combat-oriented demigod. Roleplaying as a jerk-cat who attacks everyone sounds like it would be a fun time.

Comment if you found a way to make cats knock stuff off of tables and pedestals because that would be hilarious.

    Bronze Colossus

    • Not that different from a minotaur except that you can't speak, you have no gender, and a lot more people are inclined to run away from you instead of fight you.
    • The building destroyer tag doesn't appear to do anything in adventure mode.

    Dragon

    • Quadruped; the default movement speed is 'trot'.
    • Can't talk, can't grasp, and can't open doors. If you are trying to enter/exit somewhere and there are people around, wait an hour and someone will be there to open the door for you. Move quickly because they'll immediately try to run away, closing the door behind them.
    • Firebreath is selectable under 'Natural Abilities' the same way as spit and pet are, and is fully functional as long as you target a living creature other than yourself that is within range.
    • Aggros the same way as the minotaur and bronze colossus. I haven't seen a single human, hearthperson or not, try to move in for an attack.
    • Amusingly, if you manage to get right next to someone before they notice you and aggro, there's a chance they'll pet you before running away.

I don't have the patience to mod these creatures further and try to get my hands on a book containing the secrets of life and death. If you decided to try something like that, let us know how it went.

    Mid-Sized & Hand-Held

For whatever reason these are all the rage in our fort these days. Some of our dwarves seem particularly fond of these strange human trinkets.

    Very Few Suitable Embark Locations

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 11:34 AM PDT

I'm a not-quite-beginner player who has run maybe a half dozen fortresses over two cycles of playing the game. Recently, I have been having trouble generating worlds with suitable embark locations. I usually look for deep metals, shallow metals, flux, decent amount of trees, low savagery, low evil, and I've been finding maybe one or two suitable embark locations per world I generate. Also I haven't been able to find components for steel in any of my embarks, and I'd like to experience what the steel production workflow is like.

Is that normal? Are my standards for embark locations too high? At this point, I'm really enjoying trying to make a self sustaining fortress without too many threats from the environment. Thanks!

I just came across a cool planning tool in Dwarf Fortress. I used it for planning out a large outdoor building to see how much space I would need to get everything I wanted on the inside, and it worked great.

I finally figured out why my woodcutters weren't working

    Posted: 13 Aug 2020 12:32 AM PDT

Im a noob and I have been trying to get a game going but for one thing. My dorfs absolutely refused to cut trees.

I searched high and low for answers but couldn't find anything after hours of reseach and Dwarf Therapising. It seemed like I had been condemned to being a filthy elf.

I finally found the solution. You need a Stepladder. I had been cutting them out while preparing to embark.

I am not sure why this isn't mentioned anywhere. So just want to put this out there for anyone else who runs into this.

The Axeloved. Fall of the northern gem

    Posted: 12 Aug 2020 01:22 PM PDT

Hello, this is my first experience in this wonderful game, I would like to share with you a story of my first fortress called Axeloved. Hope you enjoy my first try at storytelling. Hope you like it.

    ------------------------------

It is year 250. Dwarven civilization of The Flag of Shins begins new chapter in its history as 7 dwarfs find suitable place to settle in the north of The Lost Continent in order to help their allies from The Hall of Tomes ro secure a dangerous north in case of any threat and expand further then never before. The Flag of Shins was never a big player in the world and dwarfs lived their lives without causing or getting into any kind of trouble. South was peacful, but this is north. Dwarfs from The Universe of Omens have exceptional relations with goblins and in fact, many...many goblins live in Dwarven settlements across all dwarven civilizations... expect one. The Flag of Shins.Few goblins live within dwarven ranks, as compared to other civilizations . Strangely, 3 years ago, new queen has risen. Goblin Queen Dastot Pickred. Perhaps things are about to change.

    New Dawn

Standing on the side of the river, Urist striked the ground. Suitable place was found. This is going to be home of The Large Crafts. Libashaval... "Axeloved". Dwarfs dug and shaped first corridors. First stockpiles and workshops were in place, first farms were build both under, and above the ground. Walls were waised above the ground and bridge was constructed for a easier way for crossing river. Alcohol was brewed and fish were getting caught everyday. Fortress was a success, as dwarfs expected. After hearing about success in north, fortune-seeking migrants arrived. One of them, simply known as Sibrekasel stood out amongst them because of his bright mind and soon he was appointed as fortress´ first noble. He became brooker which brought the fortress to the next level and Axeloved was now considered as a serious settlement.

    Bloom

Life was easy as easy it can be for hardworking dwarf. Land was generous. Many ores were found, guilds built. many temples raised to satisfy needs of evergrowing population. With around 100 dwarfs living in a fortress, there was just a few dwarfs freshly recruited into military. Leather armor and few crafted and bought weapons. They did not bother much with military yet as they were used to the peacful lands of the south. Building a tavern was a milestone as many guests and bards visited Axeloved. Many called it Gem of the north, with is wealthy halls, expensive crafts and many more. It sure brought a lot of attention. Tavern was a gate to the outter wolds for dwarfs of Axeloved. Bards brought stories from outside, and carried the words out of the fortress.

    Behind the shining gold.

Even though wealth shines in all directions, beer flowing through the tavern acompanied by many poets, bards... behind all the scholars passing their wisdom, there is a dark secret. There were rummors of many dwarfs throwing tantrums, showing signs of madness and violently expressing their sadness. One time, Mayor solon was found beaten, almost killed. Next day one of the miners was imprisoned without any public explanation. Solon was first mayor selelcted, and is mostly credited with the rise of Axeloved. Solon won every election held. But perhaps some of the citizens were not convinced about his sweet words and rulling methods. That´s what is being rummored at least and may not represent the truth we may never discover

    Books of doom.

Axeloved had everything but they still wanted more. They heard a word about piles of book in nearby goblin settlement. Mayor Solon promised a great library full of wisdom, and with oportunity like that, he had only one thing in mind... Well, nearby gobblin settlement belonged to The Connected hate. Goblin Civilization which they were in peace with. But only few goblins guarded their treassure and so Solon decided to raze this place in hope that no one will be left to spread the word of this act. Semi-trained squad was assembed and sent on its mission. The Flag of Shins had a peacful history. No one would suspect Solon´s Axeloved to be responsible in case of... "success"... Days passed and warriors returned with many new assets for their great library. Solon was pleased.

    Day of reckoning.

Days passed, dwarfs of Axeloved have been enjoying their lives. Life was good... Until...Bells rang. Enemy at the gates. Goblins.... So many of them, even the brightest mind would have had trouble counting them. They did not hesitate and rushed to the entrance. Chaos has erupted. They were not prepared for this. They did not expect this... Squad assembled near the entrance but they were no match. Goblins and Trolls cut through the initial defence, and started the slaughter. Many dwarves had died. At least 50 of them were lying in their own blood untill last enemy either ran or drowned in its own blood. Many more could not cope with the aftermath of the battle and everyday, new dwarf has been found dead. Solon was dead. The one who was supposed to lead this fortress for many years to come. Not many sane dwarfs were left. Those few still standing, were soon overrun by the second wave. Axeloved has fallen. The Connected Hate has won.

Dwarfs of Axeloved have provoked a bloody war, aslo known as The Molten War, which resulted in many deaths and ultimately, the fall of Axeloved.

Now, The Axeloved is home to a 1400 goblins and is one of the biggest goblin settlement of the Connected Hate. Rummor speak of 1 dwarf still living in there. Some believe it is former dwarven settler and betrayer but truth is not known.

One particular story i found very interesting is a story of a fisherdwarf. Throwing tantrums and vandalism was very common for her and one day, she was found dead, drowned in a places she spent her young life fishing,. Dwarfs could not retrieve the body from the wild river and some believe to see a ghost of her, lurking in the water near the place she died. After the battle with goblins... after all this chaos, only one dwarf was found drowned. In a place where young fisherdwarf drowned... her son was found dead

    Joe Exotic, but a Necromancer

    Posted: 12 Aug 2020 05:30 PM PDT

After watching Salford Sal's excellent examination of the history of a re-embark site. (https://youtu.be/RBD9dxOknw4) I decided to dig into the history of the massive force of undead assualting my fortress of 3 years.

According to the legends browser the leader of the assault is one Imo Sistersidol the Intricate Sanctum of Breeds. Her only notable achievements, other than killing 7 people attempting to visit my fortress with her bare hands and another with a sandal, are two guidebooks The City Within Reason, and The Tower: My Only Mistake both written as prisoner in the tower Youthwayward before she died of old age. Both are described as written vicious as can be, and quite cruel describing the tower she was imprisioned and her former home Tugpraise where lived with her husband before he was killed by a pig.

Apparently she died of old age and was brought back by a mummy named Kozi Taxsheltered. A former trapper turned constable with a thing for wild cats and other dangerous animals. After a long life of animal taming and warfare he died of old age. He was entombed and disturbed from his rest. He never managed to get his revenge as the merc who disturbed him died for misadventure. After his return he wandered around made a lot of "grave corpses", had a 5 year feud with a bear, and finally building his own tower Youthwayward. He is now the overlord of the Rivers of Heather, and really likes making grave corpses. Goal to rule the world with his pets a giant moth, giant cougar, leopard, bear polar, bobcat and giant weasel.

Well I now I know what I'm up against. Joe Exotic Kozi Taxsheltered must die.
