Dwarf Fortress Gladiator Tournament V Round 5 Results

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 01:56 AM PDT

Welcome everyone, to the glorious semi finals of the fifth Gladiator Tournament! The four remaining contestants are already legends in their own right, and they will be remembered. The stadium is overflowing with spectators crazy with bloodlust, and they will not be disappointed tonight either!

Fight 5A: Anyola the Obscured vs. City Guard NPC

As usual, in our first fight, Anyola the Obscured (managed by u/NordicNooob) is ready to take another life. This masked bird woman has been killing with her dagger since she was young. She entered this tournament to hide from family, but considering how much fame, and how many fans she has acquired, it can easily be said that her strategy backfired. She is now well known throughout the city, and most of the surrounding countryside. The bookmakers have her ranked as the most likely to win the finale, and some even claim she can be the one to kill Paul the Pulverizer, the most notorious champion the arena has ever had. She started by cutting down Shlagaflagadeebus, slashing Nora Gomez' throat and mincing Tulantuk to pieces. In the last round she truly showed her superior skill and ended the fight against the much larger, slightly undead, Beul the executioner with one single, swift and powerful stab, to the shock of the entire arena. This next fight seems too easy for such a skilled fighter. Her opponent is famously "just a guy":

City Guard NPC (managed by u/CalamarRojo). You should think he was just one of many like him. He sure look and talks like it. Surprisingly enough, when his brothers keep getting butchered easily by random heroes traveling through town, this guy has staying power. He killed Flipper Gut-Ripper the genocidal penguin man; he put down Ipetynalzo for resisting arrest; he broke the unbreakable Zip Zop and his pike was longer than the spear of Kosak the Drinker, making for an easy win. His fanbase is very loyal and vocal in their support, even though nobody really knows anything about this guy, except that he is covered in iron armor and he is wearing a gold star on his chest. When he moves, it is clear he has been wearing this armor every day for a long time. Is he ever not on duty?

    Log; Combat video

Anyola enters the arena casually. Her elephant leather mask hides her emotions, but her body seems relaxed. Still wielding a dagger and a shield, she has chosen to stay agile and flexible, forgoing all heavy armor, except for steel protection on her hands. Nothing about her demeanor shows any sign of fear.

City Guard NPC stands calm as usual, his pike by his side. He whistles a little and looks around, at nothing in particular. Even if this might be the day he dies, he seems not to have given it any thought. As soon as the horn sounds though, his entire stance changes and he seems ready for action.

They meet in the middle of the arena, both with weapons at ready. Anyolas first strike is easily parried by the NPCs pike, using his greater range effectively. It seems the first strike was just a feint though, because as soon as he stabs back Anyola sidesteps and with a quick flick of her wrist her dagger takes control of the pike and she closes range fast. The Masked Lovebird Woman dives in and slashes at the guards left thigh. It seems to connect but it does not pierce the Standard Issue Guardsman Chain Leggings©. The bigger NPC seems to understand the danger of having a dagger wielding opponent this close, but instead of trying to retreat back to pike range, he suddenly charges and bodyslams the smaller Lovebird Woman.

Anyola tumbles backward, seemingly surprised by the Guardsmans uncharacteristic move. This is not how the guards of this city is trained to fight! As she stands up, she just manages to parry a stab from NPC, and she tries to close range again. To the surprise of everyone in the stadium, it seems City Guard NPC had anticipated this move. He dodges the blow with an insane amount of speed for an ironclad warrior, moves his grip down the shaft of his pike, holding it like a dagger and plunges it into Anyolas unprotected torso. The crowd goes wild and chants of "To protect – To Serve!" are heard rhythmically.

The Masked Lovebirdwoman does not react in time, and the lawman drives his shoulder into her, sending her flying backwards. As she falls, NPC pulls the pike out of her body, adjusts his grip to the Standard Regulation Peacmaker Grip, and stabs the birdwomans foot hard. The skinny legs of a bird are no match for the steel and might of the law, and the foot is cut off.

Anyola the Obscured starts screaming as the Guardsman starts stabbing her over and over. He keeps shouting "Stop resisting!", but nobody in the arena can see Anyola actually making any effort to fight back. As the wounds mount up, and its clear to Anyola her time has come, she shouts a question at the NPC: "How can this be? You are just an NPC!"

The Guardsman NPC bellows back between bloody stabs: "I'M NOT AN NPC! ... I HAVE DREAMS! ... MY … NAME … IS … BOB!" By the time the last word is heard across the arena, Anyola the Obscured stops moving completely, too much of her blood covering the arena floor.

The cheers from the crowds are deafening. Bob the Guardsman collects himself, brushes off a little blood from his face and armor, and marches out of the arena.

Fight 5 B: She Intends To Stab You vs. Molurus

Now for the second half of this exciting semifinal! In the upper corner stands a ruthless axolotl woman, She Intends To Stab You (managed by u/kippyster)! This dead-eyed, sadistic axolotl woman has had no name, filling in her intentions for the tournament, and still she has managed to become one of the fan favorites for the tournament, due to her efficiency in decapitating the opponent and delightfully bloody extended finishers. She was expected to fight Anyola in the finale, making it our first all-female finale fight. This will obviously not happen, but she can still be the first female to reach the finale at all. She has bled out Andaloth Kilt, Adrinna Catastor and Grekk the Deranged with surprising ease, and last round she cut off Baron Von-Pierce-A-Lots thong and its contents with her impossibly sharp adamantine blade. Is there any stopping her?

Facing her is Molurus (managed by u/Rowsdower11), the Gladiator with polar opposite goals to the last years champion, Paul. While Paul wants to stop Global Warming, Molurus want to increase it, to betterment of all reptile-kind. He has destroyed Crowemurphy the Wild Boar Man, Little Tooth the Troll and Lucius Postimus Corvus the Legionary, will this Axolotl Woman be any different? Molurus has got one of the arenas best support staff, and his manager recommended he drop all his armor for this round, based on technical analysis of SITSYs fighting style. He must at all cost avoid being hit by her very deadly blade.

    Log; Combat Video

The arena is packed and cheering loudly. SITSYs bloody butchering style has drawn a special kind of psychopathic fans, and Molurus is supported by rows and rows of reptiles who supports his cause. The Axolotl Woman is wearing trophys from previous gladiators she has killed, will she be able to claim Molurus' Elk Leather Robe today?

The horn sounds and both gladiators approach each other slowly. As both fighters are unarmored, nobody can afford to make a mistake. A single hit might decide the entire fight. They start circling each other. Molurus makes the first move, slashing hard at the Axolotl. She parries the blow easily and jumps in for a stab, her favorite way of killing. Unencumbered by armor, Molurus slithers and moves like no mammal ever could, easily avoiding the stab. As Molurus dodges the blow, he prepares his response, but he also only hit air. The crowd is holding its breath, everyone knows the first sight of blood will be the deciding factor.

The Python Man creates distance between them and prepares to attack again, both facing each other just like they did before the first strike. The reptilian scimitar strike is a repeat of the first one, and The Axolotl Woman parries it in the exact same way, and dives in for a killing blow with her blue blade. To the surprise of everyone, Molurus had set a trap for SITSY. Instead of dodging away from her, he dodges into her, pounding her with his superior weight. As she tumbles backwards, he slithers close and cuts into her right foot. Andaloths leather boots are no match for the steel blade, and neither is SITSYs leg. It flies across the arena and the crowd lets out a collective scream, both in support and in shock.

Molurus wastes no time and starts chopping at the prone Axolotl Woman. First he severs her other leg, and then he removes her left arm. As she sits on the arena floor, legless and with only her weapon arm, she hisses and keeps waving the weapon around trying to stay alive, trying to strike back. Unfortunately, she bleeds too much, and she eventually succumbs to the blood loss.

The crowds are cheering like crazy. Molurus, the Python Man looks down on his prey. Even though he is cold blooded, you can tell he is horrified at what has transpired. He bows in respect, and slither out, one step closer to aid global warming.

    ------------

And that concludes our fifth round of fights, leaving only two fighters left. Here at the Arena we are really looking forward to next weekends big matchup between the City Guard formerly known as NPC and Molurus the Global warmer.

For all the ones who lost their favorite warriors today, don't despair! Our necromancers are hard at work, and they should be moving again by midweek. I'm sure this years Losers Battle Royale will be just as legendary as last years. Who will be able to leave the arena alive this year? Only a few days to find out!

Today in Dwarf Fortress... - The Dorfgobbler

    Image file recommendation.

    Posted: 15 Aug 2020 07:49 AM PDT

Hello everyone! I am a new player and have not yet gotten used to the ASCII text system. I am currently running Krugsmash's textures but am wondering if there is a slightly more beginner friendly way of visualization.

I am really looking forward to the steam release but until time becomes less subjective, is there a recommendation that beginners have?

If not, how difficult would it be to make one?

Thank you! And happy not starving.

The Last (Male) Dwarf : The Prequel

The Last (Male) Dwarf : The Prequel

The Rise of Olin and the Fall of Bulwarkboulder

Before the first age of myth, in a time before time, in the far south of the Land of Inks the dwarves of the freezing vales of the Granite Horn banded together in the Cave of Rings and founded Rithzametur, Bulwarkboulder. Bulwarkboulder lay in a frozen wasteland, separated by the treacherous expanse of the Mauve Blizzards from the rest of the world, and relied on the underworld for its survival. The forces of the Cave of Rings were led by general Olin Stakeyearlings, a brave warrior who often ventured into the depths of the to tame the denizens of those dark places.

Olin was proud and vain, and this proved to be the Cave of Rings undoing, for in the year 60 of the First Age of Myth Olin became obsessed with her own mortality and started to worship Shesan the goddess of death. After 7 years of worship Olin was granted knowledge of the secrets of life and death, which Olin hid in Bulwarkboulder.

Olin had three children. The oldest, Erib, was devoured by a forgotten beast in 85. The second, Udib, had many lovers and no children. She died in 174 at the ripe age of 160. The third, Zefon, her only son, had an uneventful life and died of old age in 168. However Olin was ambitious.

Udib became captain of the guard of Bulwarkboulder in 110, a position of great power. Power enough to claim queenship. For three years Olin tried to entice her daughter in a plot to take over the mountainhome, but to no avail. In 113 Olin was banished from the Cave of Rings, some say by the hands of her own daughter, and became chieftess of the Single Daggers. Olin only spoke with her daughter once more, but she could not keep her ambition quiet. Once again, her daughter valued the law higher than ties of blood and refused her. Udib's mother would roam the Mauve blizzard for decades and the Cave of Rings had peace.

Olin was gone from Bulwarkboulder, but her ambition was not. Slowly her following grew. An ever larger host with unlight in their eyes. In 143 Olin erected the tower of Temptedrocks and gathered her forces. In 181, thirteen years after Zefon had died, she began her offensive. After a 12 year siege Bulwarkboulder fell, her residents put to the sword and brought back to serve their new ruler. Even Zefon was resurrected, albeit after a hundred years of slumber.

Who knows what went through the Icequeen of the South, remorse perhaps? Surely Olin had not gained what she had desired. In 207 she wrote her "Errors in Olin Stakeyearlings". In 274 she brought back her son from the death, but she brought life back to his body only for his mind was too far gone. Henceforth Olin was plagued by nightmares. Nightmares she recorded in writing, with titles like "Uncanny Mountainhome". Olin still rules the Horns of Granite, writing with an ice-cold hand and eyes filled with unlight. But Olin's role in this story is over.

    Paintmatch under Pressure

The remnants of the Cave of Rings fled to the fortress of Paintmatch. Paintmatch was perched like an oasis in the Mauve Blizzard and had been the link between Bulwarkboulder and the northern lands. Now it was the last stronghold of the dwarves of the south. For neigh three hundred years the Cave of Rings enjoyed an uneventful peace, but in 485 the goblins of the Single Barbarity started their raids. For 45 years they came like clockwork. The Cave of Rings' population further diminished. Eventually it was decided that Paintmatch had to be abandoned to Olin's undeath and the goblins. Expeditions were sent out to find a new, safe homeland. The Great March Northwards was about to begin.

    The Great March

In the year 544 the vanguard of the Cave of Rings founded Gearheld. They had come from over the mountains and crossed a thousand brooks, trekked a hundred desserts and tens of elf-infested forests, they had passed the hidden fortress of Underriver where haunts dwell among the adamantine. The Cunning Bells settled Gearheld below the scorching heat of the dunes of perishing. Neither the heat, the undead wildlife, nor the hands of Porrosino occasionally spotted concerned them:

A goblin siege I had. My militia had no real armor on, say for a shield (and for one Thob Toolstrapes, not even then. He had no right arm, so it was left-handed for him), and yet beat a goblin army with an elf at its head.

I dont know if my dorfs are trying to create a biker gang or a glittery mob. Either way shiny studded leather pants will be worn.
