    Dealing with an experiments infestation

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 02:49 AM PDT

My embark is a little more necromancer-y than I thought it would be, and early on I was assaulted by parties consisting mainly of experiments.

Seems they liked the place, because a whole bunch of them became "friendly" and decided to hang around the surface.

Now I'm not a close-minded dwarf, but these guys keep breeding and I'm not liking the FPS drain much. It's not too bad as their pop seem to cap around 600, but that's a lot more experiments than I want around my base (the correct amount is none).

How do you manage this kind of nuisance? Here's what I've tried so far:

    • Traps: they're all (or most of them) immune
    • Drown the whole surface in magma. Took quite a bit to build the 148-levels magma pump and its windfarm ; and it turns out the magma dries way too fast to cover it all with a single pump stack.
    • Build walls to channel the magma to specific areas: this was just about as troublesome as getting the magma to the surface, but kind of successful in the end. I did manage to burn a couple hundreds of experiments this way, but it takes a huge amount of time to set up and clean each flood, and sometimes not all of them burn - I'm not sure whether they're fireproof or flying above the magma. In any case, I can't burn them faster than they breed.
    • Tried to just directly target them with military squads. Mixed results: some are easy targets, some are dangerous. As they're "friendly", I had to direct each kill manually, so not really workable for hundreds of continually breeding nuisances.
    • Tried to set up a ballista battery. It kind of works, but it's way too slow and the targets are way too spread out. Also I burnt most of it with magma at some point.

If I knew how to bait them at least, I could do something... But as "friendly" "others", they don't seem much bothered when I slay one or two in front of the rest.

I'd like to beat this without cheating/cheesing too much, do you guys have any ideas?
