Dwarf Fortress has such a unique community

    Posted: 06 Apr 2021 02:09 PM PDT

I wanted to give a special thank you to the Moderators, Mod Makers, and everyone who shares info here in the forums and elsewhere.

I played several years before I joined this group and relied on the wiki and searches for everything. I have learned a lot in the few weeks since I joined this group and can't stress enough how impressed I am. I have been gaming for over 4 decades now and have never seen another group anywhere near this helpful and I used to write the guides for all the MMORPGs prior to my quitting cold turkey back in 2007 due to addiction to them.

Everyone here is cordial and helpful and it is truly a unique community. The fan art adds an extra layer of awesome to it.

Thank You for all your help. Now to continue to ask what may be dumb questions lol.

    Dwarven independence

    Posted: 06 Apr 2021 09:29 PM PDT

So, ever since I've started playing this game, I've been annoyed by our dependence to those disgusting plant carcasses. So, after some research, I've started modding raws and I believe I have achieved tree independence.

I've made few changes. -Stone beds -Metal beds -Stone bins (before you can smelt any metal, or your stockpiles are gonna be full too quickly.) -Cremate remains

Remember all those useless leftovers from when you slaughter anything? You take the edibles and the leather and you are left with a lot of body parts. Cartilage, nervous tissue, those things... now I can cremate them in a wood burner with a piece of fuel. The reaction creates one ash. But I need to be careful because it will cremate just about any remains. That includes wool, bones, shells. All the useful stuff burns just as well.(I used CORPSEPIECE). Also, better bring a piece of coal along, or I will have to wait for merchants to start any fuel production

I was also disappointed with the leather production, of 1 leather, weather it's a turkey or an elephant, so I used the GLOB for skins in the material template and now I make plenty of leather. Maybe even too much.

Have some weird results with the skin as GLOB. I assume it relates to the ammount of fat in an animal, since that is where that tag comes from, but some animals are weird. Chicken give 2 leather Cats 6 Geese 8 Turkey 9 Dog 13 Haul animals 15 I suppose they have very large dogs. Saint Bernards or some huge mastiffs. I dunno. I'll look in the domestics to see if I make them a bit smaller. Besides that, I'll avoid butchering dogs for now. I already did, since I love dogos, but you know how are thinks in a fortress. Update. I've just spawned an elephant. 19 leather. Not as much as I thought. I wonder if you can tan dragon leather...

    What are your thoughts?

What kind of shenanigans can I do with a caged werebeast?

    Posted: 06 Apr 2021 07:58 PM PDT

The first werebeast to attack my fortress transformed back into a goblin and stumbled into a cage trap. He's been sitting in a cage stockpile for two years now (next to an ettin that was our next unfriendly visitor) while we got everything else in order. But now the fortress is steady and secure, and I still don't know what to do with this guy. Suggestions?

The Spanish Fotress is here again!!!

I read about the Steam release.

    Posted: 06 Apr 2021 06:17 PM PDT

I just saw the latest steam dev report on steam and felt pretty bad about it (Might be late on that). I get that it's going to be released on steam with a nice looking "3D kind of" update. I'm struggling to get my head around what the point of it is. There's a lot of chatter about "the average user" everywhere I turn, but I don't think the concept of Dwarf fortress translates to everyday gamers. All I see is Toady1 looking stressed over updates on UI that I think is unnecessary. It kind of feels like selling out even though I wouldn't ever dream of accusing the team of it. I'm not afraid of change or anything.. since I can just keep playing the game as I've always done without steam, but I feel! I feel that it's all going towards a place where the dream demographic is middle school kids who like to play Fortnite. The reason I post (for once) is that I like to hear your thoughts about it. Tell me I'm an old man for all I care. Should I be worried even?
