    A question about world longevity

    Posted: 24 Apr 2021 08:39 AM PDT

I would like to question something that I have experienced across several games. What I have seen implies that after a world is created and you begin the play in it, the entire world just slowly decays and the people in it die without being replaced. There are no more cultural works, no more towns being founded (except for some hillocks around your base) and no more people being born. Wars are waged and towns are massacred and it all goes to hell. A goblin fortress sends a few waves of soldiers at your base and when they run out of people, they are done. Then it's just a demon lord and a handful distracted trolls hanging out in an empty black pit. Things progress in your fortress but not anywhere else. I've had fortresses last over a hundred years and the rest of the world quickly empties itself and then it all comes to a standstill.

Is this true in your experience of the game as well? Or have I just had several games where this rare dying of the world has occurred?

    The pant bandits of Granitetown

    Posted: 24 Apr 2021 11:46 AM PDT

In 254 artifact trousers were woven in Granitetown, an above ground town of 30 dwarves. They had never been attacked and only had Lilith, a competent swordsdwarf, and Strider, a skilled marksdwarf to defend it.

In 256 the broker Emily showed off the pants in the tavern. Rumors spread, until one day the goblin Id in 257 declared outside the gate that he would have the pants. The tavern erupted into civil war as human bandits disguised as travelers began shooting crossbows into the crowd. Many animals were mutilated and the legendary metalsmith Mercury was brutally shot in the neck and choked to death.

Outside, Emily was trying to sneak into the town. Id saw her, and the swordgoblin brutally stabbed her over and over on the front entrance stone floor until she died.

Granitetown citizens formed militias and beat the everliving shit out of the crossbow pant bandits. It turned out the dwarven outpost liaison was a traitor! They dragged him to the alley behind the tavern and beat him to death. We never got another liaison.

The only reason the town survived was Strider, who shot his entire quiver into Id and fought him off, but was struck down mercilessly in the end, a warriors death. Lilith was not so lucky. I have never seen teeth, bone, etc fly up and away from a dwarf like when Id approached Lilith. It made me sick watching the tiles.

Id saw that his pant bandits had been beaten to death. Wounded from Strider, he fled, four dwarves out of a 30 dwarf town murdered. The pant bandits would have those pants one day.

I killed a night creature that kidnapped and killed children. With my vampire powers I revive the skeletons as thralls out of sheer pity, and well, the first thing the rotten child carcasses do... Is of course play make believe!

    Fortress Entrance design

    Posted: 24 Apr 2021 06:10 AM PDT

I struggle with how to dig my early fortress design in a way that will later support a functional, efficient (and visually satisfying) defensive entrance.

How do you approach your first 3-12 months of digging so that your dwarves survive, but then transform that into a larger sustainable fortress entrance? What design tricks do you follow? Screenshots and drawings welcome.

My civ keeps conquering nearby towns without me sending out any squads and giving them all to me! Never happened to me before!

Nice quirky intro to DF video

    Posted: 24 Apr 2021 02:23 PM PDT

I came across this video and thought it was a delightful newb-esque take on DF, I like her enthusiasm

    Lolo & Co Adventure

I feel like DF is slowly getting some non-gamer interest as the Steam Update builds momentum
