    Ask about anything related to Dwarf Fortress - including the game, utilities, bugs, problems you're having, mods, etc. You will get fast and friendly responses in this thread.

    Read the sidebar before posting! It has information on a range of game packages for new players, and links to all the best tutorials and quick-start guides. If you have read it and that hasn't helped, mention that!

    You should also take five minutes to search the wiki - if tutorials or the quickstart guide can't help, it usually has the information you're after. You can find the previous questions thread here.

    Optimal Equipment

    3rd and likely last update from my fortress PURPLEBOOT. It seems my anticipation of a greater mass of vile darkness has arrived. I'm sure in no time at all I'll be picking a new site for a new fortress... But hey, i'm proud of how far I got.

    It is made from giant cave spider silk cloth. The thread is midnight blue with dimple dye.

    This object menaces with spikes of giant cave spider silk.

    On the item is an image of Monom Chantattic the dwarf and chains in giant cave spider silk. Monom Chantattic is surrounded by the chains.

    Keyboard keys only work sometimes.

    I have this weird issue.

    I've played dwarf fortress in the past, and I'm trying to play again.

    I've extracted the latest lazy newb pack and the game launches, but navigating is very difficult.

    I can only get the arrow keys to work if numlock is turned off.

    Enter only works occasionally and seemingly random.

    After I finally got my map generated when I try to go up and down the z axis it only works occasionally.

    It's really weird and I can't find anything by googling different searches.

    I'm on a laptop.

    My keyboard has no issues with other software.

    It's the same if I use the laptop's keyboard and an external keyboard.

    Any ideas?

    2nd Victory! Thanks to the suggests from my previous post to go raiding. I've now "RAZED" these pesky goblins from the world, though another one nearby to eyeball after a bit of a drink and a rest. For Purpleboot!

    Found an interesting book in my current reclaimed fort Silverbattles, the same where dwarves with rotten heart survive.

    The book.

    See something? Right, it's an essay about death of dwarf written by the dwarf herself! I got curious and dug into legends... Here's the whole story:

    Year 2. Lor Burninks, chief medic and Vucar Atticpracticed, bookkeeper of Silverbattles become lovers. In 25 and 28 they both get great prizes at gambling.

    Year 46. The said mountain titan Imepe Ironwaters the Cloudy Seed attacks Silverbattles and kills both then, their king Endok Archwork and a few more brave dwarves. The titan dies at the battle to, but the slayer remains unknown.

    Silverbattles goes on well, till year 141, when dwarves breaches the Underworld. Demon hordes rushes in, and the very same time goblin army attacks the gates! The army was led by another demon Ufalo Deathburials the Fatal Urn of Crypts, and obviously that was not a coincidence!

    Silverbattles is taken over, and Ufalo - by the whim, because of twisted nature or having some plans - raises a few dwarves from dead as faint hunters. Among those are Lor, Vucar and Endok the king. It's remarkable that Lor and Vucar still remain lovers. The Love that overcomes death itself!

    Vucar begins wandering outside, fights giant wolves and leopard women, while Lor stays at Silverbattles under goblin reign, and becomes an apprentice of Arstruk Sinshove. Later she decides to move with her master to dark pits of Taxedghoul.

    At year 154 Lor and Vucar officially break up. Vucar goes on with wandering and gambling, till 172, when he gets into debts and leaves Silverbattles. His wanders end at hillock Constructchanced, where he was struck down by an elephant.

    But back to Lor. After breaking up with Vucar and studying under Arstruk, she returns to Silverbattles and becomes lover of Endok, the raised king. Later she writes a few essays, including the one above, and then goes the same way Vucar did. Gambling, debts, Constructchanced, DEATH BY ELEPHANT! Same place, same destiny, but 8 years later...

    Spying monarch.

    According to the wiki: " Immigrants identified as prophets are actually agents (spies) from your own civilization. ".
    I had one of those in my fortress, but she became the queen of our civilization and started demanding way to expensive rooms and furniture. She is currently listed as "queen" in the units screen, but in the civilization screen she is listed as "queen/Prophet".
    Not sure if this is normal or not, as I'm still new to the game, but I've also noticed in the Civilizations screen that she is listed under our civilization, but not in our group.
    Should I make her the victim of some sort of tragic accident? I don't really feel like she can be trusted.
