A Fiery Blob Situation - Brainstorm

    Posted: 11 Mar 2021 06:25 AM PST

Strangers from distant lands, friends of old you 've been summoned here to answer the threat in Minespiral...

A forgotten beast called Stongun Usaspotomu Ebrakn - a great blob composed of flame with long handing tails - came to Avuztishis (Minespiral) to upset the lives of The Peaceful Will-of Plums.

He is indestructible.. he spits fire and appears to be impervious to physical attacks. A number of trolls, troglodytes and draltha were incinerated in the caverns and he came barging into the home of the chief agrarian and roasted him in his bed.

Which fortunately allowed me to lock him into the quarters. I re-directed a river through a long series of pipes and tried to flood the quarters but he's too hot and the water just boils before it can reach him. In the rare occation that he does go into a square with 7 depth water it just boils and he doesn't seem hurt (although a notice does say he's caught in a cloud of steam)

I thought I could use it to my advantage and create a nice hammam for the dwarves but that hasn't worked very well.. he just ends up belching fire through the steam vents and turning it into an uncomfortable sauna.

I have no idea how to kill him.. I think it might be impossible. So the question is now how to use him. I was thinking to try to coax him into a deep, hollowed out cavern and just to use it as a way of having a perpetual flow of water from the river into the fortress without flooding. I have built a shower already that spits out into the caverns, but it's used sparingly as the flood tends to run through one of the cavern corpsepiles.. so if water ends up with Stongun then it can be always on (Mist!)

So please, share some of your beardy bastard brains to help come up with a novel use for this fiery blob.

College of Dwarfology - Chapter 9 (Accessing Magma with fewer Resources)

    Posted: 10 Mar 2021 03:18 PM PST

In this chapter, I walk you through a modified method of transporting magma to where you need it. Without needing a massive amount of infrastructure or building your base at the magma layer.

This chapter can be found at:

    https://youtu.be/Bzk8WVEiLZA

and the main dwarfology thread can be found at:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/dwarffortress/comments/ely84n/college_of_dwarfology/

Special thanks to Joel and Clinodev, for their assistance. Joel has a fantastic picture guide on the true to wiki method at:

and Clinodev, cause I was stuck in the biggest I've been off the horse too long how do I even come up with an idea for a topic and he helped me through it.

If you'd like to request a chapter for the college of dwarfology guidebook let me know, trust me it really helps.

You can also find me on and off again in the bi-weekly threads answering simpler questions and skimming for dwarfology ideas.

    Dwarf Fortress and AI

    Posted: 10 Mar 2021 09:54 PM PST

AI is already the future of all gaming and simulation. It's undeniable, and in as little as 10 years we might see this entire game be outmatched by a self-taught computer program. You might call it irrelevant and a problem for the future, but you would be forgetting that you're correct.

Of course, "AI" right now is really dumb. For a general idea of the current state of artificial intelligence you could look at AI dungeon. (It's not that good, but it's a start to something much bigger.) Though that doesn't mean it cannot inevitably surpass this game as, unlike space travel, we know for a fact AI is scientifically possible.

If you want a general idea of what might occur look at what is happening to Minecraft currently. Despite constant updates, bug fixes, and development it's still the same game it was 10 years ago. It's outdated. Mobs can crash your game. It takes the developers, of a multi-billion dollar company, an entire year to create a major update. Comparable to Dwarf Fortress in many aspects, aside from the bugs of course, as Dwarf Fortress is better made in that aspect. The main point is that Minecraft could easily be remade by a major company in mere months from the ground up, and it would be better. Dwarf Fortress could soon experience that with AI.

Yes, both games would still be fun. Minecraft is still the best and biggest game in the world. Dwarf Fortress will still be a very fun game to play, but both will eventually fall hard very soon to future technological progress. The only solution to this issue is the forbidden suggestion you should never tell a developer, but still we truly don't have to solve it at all. It's just sad to think so many games with decades of work will get an early grave.

Or we could someday combine Dwarf Fortress generation and game-play with future AI technology
