    ☼Bi-weekly DF Questions Thread☼

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 04:09 PM PST

Ask about anything related to Dwarf Fortress - including the game, utilities, bugs, problems you're having, mods, etc. You will get fast and friendly responses in this thread.

Read the sidebar before posting! It has information on a range of game packages for new players, and links to all the best tutorials and quick-start guides. If you have read it and that hasn't helped, mention that!

You should also take five minutes to search the wiki - if tutorials or the quickstart guide can't help, it usually has the information you're after. You can find the previous questions thread here.

If you can answer questions, please sort by new and lend a hand - linking to a helpful resource (eg wiki page) is fine.

Necromancer research: resurrection of dead necromancers as a cure for insanity.

    Posted: 05 Feb 2021 09:09 AM PST

If a necromancer raises a dead necromancer, one of two things happen: the dead one becomes a standard zombie (boring), or is raised an intelligent undead (fun!).

These resurrected necromancers are still called necromancers by the game, they are still listed as a normal unit, though they can't be assigned labors. They tend to make their way to the hospital after raising, presumably to deal with whatever injuries killed them.

Most importantly for our purposes: those who were suffering from insanity beforehand do not seem to be bothered by affliction anymore upon raising.

    Album documenting the process.

    Welcome to Shorequakes

Founded in the year 125, Shorequakes has quickly grown into a thriving fortress. Exporting valuable metal crafts and weapons, it has also been a staging point for many military operations to fight back against the goblins attacking our lands. The humans and elves are being overrun, with the human capital under goblin control. Shorequakes has made it their goal to take back the lands that were overtaken by the goblin hordes of The Fiend of Hearts and The Pink Demon.

The surface, after 2 sieges. We are under attack from all sides by the goblin menace. Our metalsmiths are staged here, pumping out bolts, armor, weapons, and crafts on masse.

The farm level, producing dye, cloth, and food for the fortress.

The military barracks and quarters of our Baroness, Mafol Matzangaloth. Rumor has it she has a book containing the secrets of life and death locked away in her office...

The primary living area of the fortress. There are many temples and a finely appointed tavern, along with several rooms. There are clear glass windows overlooking the waterfall from inside the food stockpile.

This is a primarily residential level, that also contains the hospital and several guild halls.

This level contains the stockpiles and miscellaneous workshops. We are currently running a bit low on stone, we have needed to continuously quarry for more throughout the history of the fortress, carving out vast swathes of mountainside.

Our well appointed library, with copies of books from all around the world, enjoyed by all dwarves.

Our prison and crypt, along with offices for my Dungeon Master, Captain of the Guard, and Hammerer.

Well, that's about it when it comes to the fortress. Feel free to ask any questions about the history of Shorequakes or the world.

I never get a proper military up and going. Or an improper one even.

I can find guides that help me with setting up everything, but the schedule for training and where to do that training seems to be impossible for me to understand. Despite guides for that too. Anyone else have certain things they just really struggle with figuring out in this game for no particular reason?

I can feel an almsost physical blockage in my brain, preventing me from "getting" it. So frustrating, and this is the one thing that keeps me from expanding my game experience.

I still love it though! I read somewhere that this is a game/simulation for people that like being frustrated. Too true ;)

How I saved my Fortress from FPS death and sped up Adventure mode 25% in crowded areas.

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 02:44 PM PST

Fortress started slowing down drastically after switching to 47.05 (linux version). I had only 100 dwarves and 200 animals, so I killed a few animals, cut down some trees, locked doors, paved roads, but things just got slower and slower. Then when playing adventure mode, things got really slow in the city. I was trying to clear corpses, clean up, and saving every 10 minutes or so because things got so crashy. Finally at one slowdown, I switched workspaces to boot up firefox and things just froze. After about 10 minutes I restarted the computer and saw 'CPU temperature error' in my BIOS. So I shut down again, took apart the computer and cleared the 1mm layer of dust covering my CPU fan. Booted back up and lo and behold, massive speed improvements!
