☼Bi-weekly DF Questions Thread☼ Posted: 21 Jan 2021 04:09 PM PST Ask about anything related to Dwarf Fortress - including the game, utilities, bugs, problems you're having, mods, etc. You will get fast and friendly responses in this thread. Read the sidebar before posting! It has information on a range of game packages for new players, and links to all the best tutorials and quick-start guides. If you have read it and that hasn't helped, mention that! You should also take five minutes to search the wiki - if tutorials or the quickstart guide can't help, it usually has the information you're after. You can find the previous questions thread here. If you can answer questions, please sort by new and lend a hand - linking to a helpful resource (eg wiki page) is fine. [link] [comments]
Posted: 21 Jan 2021 04:08 PM PST Our weekly thread for posting interesting events without cluttering up /r/dwarffortress. Screenshots, stories, details, achievements, or other posts are all welcome here! (That includes adventure and legends mode, even if there's no fortress involved.) [link] [comments]

I'm a big fan of Splatterface battle arena. Popular opinion, I know Posted: 22 Jan 2021 05:26 AM PST Would love to hear how folks would create their own battle arenas. And what success has there been for those who've done it. I figure Kruggsmash is producing this mostly for show. And it's not practical for him to let the recordings be freely procedural. I mean, it's the essence of the combat system. [link] [comments]
I'm a newbie, I'm lost and I'm loving it. Could use some help, tho. Posted: 22 Jan 2021 10:15 AM PST Hey guys, So, after reading about it for many years, I've finally decided to give it a try and... well.. it's amazing. After reading everything I could find in the wiki and elsewhere, I've made my very first fortress. It only lasted a few hours. Anyway, the reason it failed is pretty obvious to me now, but after losing it, my curiosity led me to Legends mode where I spent HOURS reading about heroes, artifacts, immortal beings et cetera. Legends mode got me hooked. I wanted to see these cities, travel the world, track down an artifact. Before delving any deeper into it, I went back to the wiki to read everything I could find about Adventure mode and made the decision to create a human with some combat prowess and half-decent gear. Thus far, it's going well: I found a horse (and learned how to ride it), I've seen a temple, and am currently visiting an unnamed castle.... and this is where I need a bit of help.
This game is simply amazing and I'm sure there are easy ways to know these things, but I swear I couldn't find it in the wiki or youtube. Thank you very much for your time! **SOLVED** Just use Q (shift-Q) and look at the map. You can search for people, locations, see places you've been to et cetera. I'm such an idiot. =D One thing you can't do is check out the names of specific establishments, like taverns. [link] [comments]
Posted: 22 Jan 2021 05:53 AM PST At least make related communities their own separate tab - there's literally a widget made specifically for that (sidebar widgets -> community list). This way you won't have more people posting their questions on bi-weekly threads than on sub dedicated to their questions. Placing all questions on bi-weekly threads greatly hinders the visibility of questions asked as that means that r/dwarffortress members not only need to be on r/dwarffortress sub as well as on its bi-weekly thread (as opposed to question-posts simply appearing on their feed), but need to actively look for questions they'd like to answer as opposed to random samples being given to them on their feed [link] [comments]
Posted: 21 Jan 2021 11:33 PM PST So I've made a thread about the idea to speedrun the game, if anyone interested, here the link [link] [comments]

Posted: 21 Jan 2021 02:49 PM PST Hello dorfmasters! Haven't played DF for a while, but I'm eager to dig in again. I wanted to add some customisation to my game, and one thing I'd like to do is to make eggs brewable - in other words, make it so that booze can be produced by them. The rationale behind this is that in Italy we produce two egg-based liqueurs, called Vov and Zabov. They are delicious, and I'd like for my dorfs to savor them. So, how do I make eggs brewable? What files should I go edit, and how? [link] [comments]

Live stream announcement for Fri, Jan 22 the dwarven fortress of Swampcavern Posted: 21 Jan 2021 08:32 PM PST Good news, everyone! On Fri I'm going to try live streaming at 1 pm central standard time for north America, and if that goes well and my internet allows again at 7 pm. I'm going to try to broadcast for an hour or so. This is my second ever attempt at live streaming and the last one I tried go for 40 minutes , but I had to stop after two tries and 25 minutes because my internet was being too slow, so set your expectations accordingly. I don't know how to send a link to a live stream, especially one that hasn't happened yet but here's my channel https://www.youtube.com/user/TheEqualsE/featured you can find it there. When the stream is over I will post the footage from my hard drive, which will be the nicer version any way, so if you can't see it live, it will be up on the channel shortly after it happens. My plan is work on a mushroom park expansion for Swampcavern which will involve a lot of digging and planning. It will take a long time to build so who knows what goblins, werebeasts or forgotten beasts will show up while we're doing that. Strike the earth, everyone! [link] [comments]
Upon re-watching The Hobbit I realised something... Posted: 21 Jan 2021 10:42 PM PST Now I'm sure this is no big surprise to any fan of both DF and Tolkien and has surely been commented on but I am truly amazed at how similar tales of the Dwarves in Tolkien's works are to tales of the rise and fall of fortresses. Most of this is just my opinion but I did look through some of the wiki pages on The One Wiki to Rule them All. Orc-Dwarf Relations Throughout the history of Middle Earth, since their creation by Morgoth, Orks/Goblins/Uruk-hai have been a constant menace. Roaming the lands of Middle Earth, slaughtering, pillaging and capturing various towns, villages and yes Dwarven cities and ruins. I'm sure this inspired Tarn Adams in creating his Goblins, roaming warbands from civilizations who want nothing more than to steal the fruits of good honest Dwarven labour and keep them for themselves. A (mostly) unstoppable horde sweeping across the land bringing chaos, war and death sounds a lot to me like the armies of Sauron and Melkor before him. The Goblins even, for the most part, answer to Demon overlords with Sauron and Melkor being powerful, fallen angelic figures in Tolkien's writings in their own right. The Coming of Great Beasts As your Dwarf Fortress acquires more wealth, and a larger population to create that wealth, more and more dangerous foes will come to claim it. Giants, Ettins, Titans, Dragons, Rocs; all of these beasts will arrive, apparently hearing tell of your Fortress' vast piles of artefacts and masterwork gold coins through the evil grapevine. Now this is obviously very similar to the story of Smaug coming to Erebor. Smaug came to Erebor and destroyed the defending Dorfs, taking over the city of Erebor and lounging in their horde. A common fate of Dwarf Fortresses is to be destroyed by these megabeasts so Smaug would be typical in these stories except DF dragons can't fly. Digging Too Deep Another common fate of fortresses is what arises from digging too deep. Breaking into the circus and unleashing the clowns in search of the precious, precious cotton candy is extremely similar to what arose in the mines of Moria. The mines of Moria were full of the precious material Mithril and they dug so much of the stuff out, funding a large portion of their economy and industry from it. They dug deeper and deeper for Mithril and eventually dug too deep, unleashing the Balrog. Sounds similar to the hunt for cotton candy no? Part of the reason why we condemn our fortresses to this fate is partially out of greed, partially the need for the candy and maybe partially because we think we can handle the clowns. Dwarves falling to their pride and hubris is a major recurring factor within Tolkien's work, the most recognisable example with Thorin and him holding onto everything from Erebor, isolating him from any potential allies at first in TBoTFA. Conclusion So, in conclusion, there are a lot of similarities between Dwarf Fortress and Tolkien's Dwarves. Just thought this was interesting. Lemme know if this is common knowledge or has already be done. P.S. While Tolkien's Elves may apparently be plant eaters, at least they're useful for something other than giant animals. And can withstand the emotional trauma of being presented with a wooden button. [link] [comments]
Magma-safe stones in stockpile order Posted: 21 Jan 2021 01:57 PM PST Metal Ores (just to be comprehensive):
Economic:
Other Stone:
This is more or less just a post for me to put something where I can find it later on the internet, since I keep turning up nothing when searching for this and having to hunt down and match this list against the wiki's alphabetical one. Hopefully someone else will find this useful when setting up their own stockpiles for magma-safe furniture near their Mason's and Mechanic's Workshops and stockpiles for all the other stones near their Craftdwarf's Workshops like I like to.
