    Ask about anything related to Dwarf Fortress - including the game, utilities, bugs, problems you're having, mods, etc. You will get fast and friendly responses in this thread.

    Read the sidebar before posting! It has information on a range of game packages for new players, and links to all the best tutorials and quick-start guides. If you have read it and that hasn't helped, mention that!

    You should also take five minutes to search the wiki - if tutorials or the quickstart guide can't help, it usually has the information you're after. You can find the previous questions thread here.

    I spun up my first fortress about a week ago and just stumbled through with the wiki holding my hand the best it could. Now, 4 years in, there are 475 in the deceased/missing column, we have 6 crimes a day, a population of 45 (down from 100 peak) and more than 200 Dwarf KIAs, owing in part to a double underground forgotten beast attack. Both of them made guards' heads explode in single punches. One beast was taken down with a ballista round that passed through 3 dwarves on the way. I have constant miasma, and bodies litter the ground on all levels. The mayor is replaced weekly, all competent (weapon)dwarves have been drafted, and they each had a tantrum where they kill three other guards and then themselves are killed, starting tantrums in their children, who explode into gore when punched by millers. The necromancer captain of the militia has been sentenced to 150 hammer strikes and 1000 days chained for murdering 38 dwarves. All construction has stopped, the crypts are full and the coffin workshop is only making one per month. All dwarves are too depressed to carry the dead either to the dwarf corpse only stockpile or to their actual tombs. They only eat, drink, and rest, and some "Cancels Drink: Too Depressed" and then "found dead, dehydrated". The only ones who are actually doing things are the goblin dancers and poets in the tavern, and nobody cares. We failed a siege when one swam under a wall and opened the gate, and now the goblins just live here.

    An elf caravan was stopping by, a siege engineer went berserk and fired the ballista at the trade depot, destroying it and the wagon, giving us some of every metal, hundreds of crafts, and a caged jaguar that ate 4 children when it escaped, one of whom was the eldest daughter of the retired and now deceased baroness.

    I can't wait to do it again.

    I suspect there is much FUN for the goblin hordes when they make the mistake of sieiging this fortress.

    Mining/stair Issues

    Hello, I'm new to df and I thought I had stairs under control. Clearly not and they are kicking my ass way worse than the monsters in the caverns.

    My first problem is building an up staircase out of wood in this future tavern so I can start on the upper floor. My dwarves ignore the designation above them to start digging a down staircase so they can clear the second floor.

    The second is the area around my downward staircase shaft. I want a room to farm in but they just wont dig. They dug the area around the 3x3 shaft just fine but that's it.

    I dont know who attacked since whoever it was noped outta there before i saw them only thing hinting at them are a few bolts at the edge of the map.... Did i get sieged by BOLTS?!
