Dwarf Fortress Here's a new tutorial, all about reclaiming old ruins that you find on the world map, how to find them, how to find out more about them and what to expect when you get there. Contains a little teaser about my next series too ;)

The dead rises! (DF GT V)

After winning the Dwarf Fortress Gladiator Tournament Battle Royale Heavy division, Kelvinn Bloodaxe seem to have escaped the contestant quarters and disappeared. It could quite possibly be that he suddenly realized how dangerous this tournament is.

The Arena staff wants to avoid a scandal, so the council for Arena Masters decided to call on the necromancer. Contestants have usually been a little worse for wear after the first round, so maybe nobody will react when the reanimated body of Beul, the executioner shows up to fight.

I do hope the smell will go away though...

u/Kjak0110, please get your gladiator ready to fight, and please chain him to his quarters when he is not busy. We can't have another gladiator run away.

    Thoughts on low end systems

    Posted: 11 Jul 2020 03:18 PM PDT

The following stream of consciousness is based on my experiences running dwarf fortress on a very old atom32bit netbook with 1GB ram.

Durring play, excessive world events cause slowdown, not the overall world size. Lowering civs and sites only goes so far. Tweaking advanced settings to limit population sizes, and beasts will give additional FPS on a very limited system.

However extremely small maps have their own benefits, such as shorter raid travel times, potentially allowing for an alternate means of obtaining goods besides caravan and crafting.

Embark map size however is extremely important. Obviously it changes the base number of events being handled for each location on screen, and pathfinding is eased slightly. If only one step is taken to improve FPS, change the default embark size. 1×1 embarks are a challenge for new players, they require use of trades, which on a slow system might mean waiting for days or weeks irl for the next caravan. Any underground magmatubes(or a volcano embark) will make delving deep difficult with poor returns. A 2x2 embark can allow multiple biomes while still being pretty fast. New players will need to be careful using wood still, but otherwise a 2x2 embark can easily become mountainhome.

Water is a necessary evil. Since dwarves refuse to waste precious alcohol on cleaning wounds, anything short of a necromancer based reanimation hospital will need a water source to fix up the military when they throw a !!FUN!! party with the clowns and goblins. Let water flow and spread as seldom as possible.

Fort designs for efficiency are your friend. Im personally too lazy to do it in the very best ways, but general common sense helps. Keep your dwarves working in smaller areas. Burrows may help, or hinder based on your design choices. Food in a central area, along with bedrooms(dorfs store all sorts of things at home, an alternative is forbidding all clothes to run a nudist fort, only tools and heirlooms will be carried back home now and then, obvious bad thoughts from nakedness apply).

Locations like taverns need special pathfinding attention/limitation. Without a location or meeting hall, dwarves mill about near the caravan, but otherwise mill about making social calls when not busy. Each one usually requires more pathfinding, so either limiting the number of dwarves allowed in a location or making it large enough for them to path by eachother easily, will let the pathfinding code to run once, beware that larger open rooms will have more branches to compute and also slow the pathfinding. Willingness to disable locations as needed can help force lazy dwarves to find work, which will help your state of mind while trying to accomplish something.

Expand in small easily completed stages. The more options a dwarf has for a job, the longer they all take to get done. Expect some idle dwarves at all times, it the sign that you aren't overworking them. Often too many jobs forces a dwarf to work till near exhasution, cancel the task, either leaving it for later or someone else, slowing the growth of the fort.

Get an idea of how fast something can be built and where. Keep an eye on the date and make sure defences are up by year two. With a low FPS getting a feel for when an invasion comes is nearly impossible without looking at the date. Similar tips for deploying squads. Passive defences are the best.

On the plus side, a low fps allows you to travel the map keeping an eye on everything without pausing. Any problems will be slow to take effect irl, but everything is normal speed in the game world. As long as it was a problem you could deal with normally, low fps only improves your situational awareness.

Adventure mode is a no go on anything but the pocket worlds for me. Even then, most sites are unplayable. Less than 1 frame per minute on dark pits and towers. Less bad in towns without sewers. Don't even think about trying to explore or escape from a fortress except by fast travel.

And Now: A Special Pre-Fight Promotional with Urist McGladiator! (Dwarf Fortress Gladiator Tournament V)

    Posted: 11 Jul 2020 12:05 PM PDT

"Is this thing on? You guys made sure that all the audio equipment worked right? Doing these makes my voice hurt so I'd rather not do it more than once. Oh, it's live? We're live right now? For Armok's sake..."

"Good afternoon to all the little Urists at home, I hope you enjoyed the preliminary battles royale, they were sure something if you ask me, watching that dwarf with the axe -Urist McBloodaxe I think was his name- work was a sight for sore eyes. But don't forget who the real champion in the making is here, Urist McGladiator is coming right at you with a real hot fight on the Eighteenth of Malachite that'll blow your socks right off.

"What do I think of Bismuth Boris, the Bronzed Brigadier? Bismuth Boris is a babbling buffoon, hah! His alliterative attempts are all average at best. Urist McGladiator, the real champion in waiting, stands ready to knock some dents not just into this snapping turtle's bronze suit, but his skull, and every skull that stands in my way to the top!

"If you place your bets on Boris you're wasting your time, this turtle is coming at the best gladiator in the tournament, with a dagger of all things! How's that going to match up with the hammer that my father, the legendary Urist McWeaponsmith, made with his own two hands? Platinum all the way through, heavy as all the clowns in the circus. Watch our fight, but for the faint of heart - or the faint of stomach - viewer discretion is advised, Urist McGladiator is gonna bring the most brutal smackdown you've seen since the Pulverizer himself.

"A bet on Urist McGladiator doubles your money, there ain't no two ways about it. I'm guaranteed to bring home the glory for dwarf kind, and my boy's boy, Urist McInfant. Stay tuned little Urist McBoys and Urist McGirls at home, and get hyped for the opening fight of the greatest tournament you've ever seen!

    "McGladiator out."
