    Oh, Poor Thresher

Welcome to LusterTheater, the last mountainhome of The Hopeful Glove, once great dwarven civilization.

    https://preview.redd.it/d0h3368pfta51.png?width=913&format=png&auto=webp&s=0924ea185c4531329e1cd12a0ea4ee38f9a4352c

While other cities were one by one conquered by goblins, or razed to ruins by wild beasts, it remains the last hope of great dwarven culture to survive. And they do pretty well - small but nice library is full of scrolls, that expeditions took while exploring nearest ruins, legendary masters are working, temples, taverns... One can think of this place as of dwarven eden built next to volcano tube.

But not everything is so bright.

    https://preview.redd.it/m4whrsyqjta51.png?width=704&format=png&auto=webp&s=6f5bdec8b81f2d68e08ec01d03b351880f3582f0

During the thousand years of collapsing civilization some (and pretty some) dwarves turned to seeking forbidden knowlege. They mastered not the holy craft of creation, but the unholy one of raising deads! And as that wasn't enough, they made experiments on prisoners to make... something.

    https://preview.redd.it/4kewtvnzkta51.png?width=945&format=png&auto=webp&s=22860bc554d32e9f0d03bc0100cd9bd4d95aebe6

So the armies of the undeads and unholy creations repeatedly tried to take over the fortress. Dwarves managed to repel them each time, with clever usage of lava traps and brave warriors to finish those who avoided it... But the more times they fought, the more clever their foes became. This time they tried a hidden ambush from the high peaks. Armed with crossbows, they stormed from above, killing anyone who happened to be on their way. Being the unliving things, the had no mercy, no pity...

Ubbul Alisgoden, a thresher, happened to be outside that time, carrying her two babies - a newborn son and almost-one-year daughter. Suddenly a swarm of bolts rains from above the cliffs!

She had her legs, her guts, her lung pierced. Laying on the ground the crawled back to the save halls, crying for help, trying to cover the chidlren with her body... And then she passed out.

One of ambushers jumped down the cliff to finish her off. Approaching the blood-leaking body she (it was a female specie, though I have no idea should it matter for undead creation) she saw that something still moves there, and...

Time that was spent on mutilating little dwarves let the military squad to assemble and charge at invaders. All of them were brought down and finished off.

The unconscious but still breathing Ubbul were brought to hospital, and our medic squad kept fighting for her life. After several days of hard work, when the last suture was sewn, the last bondage was dressed, and a splint was put on the last broken bone, she was left to rest and get back to conscious.

Ubbul woke up in a rough-hewn chamber, on a wooden bed, having an empty space in her memory. "My babies... Where they are?" Not able to stand up, she climbed down to the floor and crawled forward - somewhere. Somewhere outside, where - as she remembered - she saw her son and daughter last time.

    - DEDUK! AST! - called Ubbul, straining her wounded lungs to cough. Nobody here. Just pools of blood.

    - Nn.... Icum Worthyhonored the Sacrificial, please, no...

Her memory was suddenly back. There were no chance her babies survived.

    - Why! Why AM I ALIVE!!! - cried Ubbul at cruel sun. The ugly lantern had no reply. It had no concern in a lone dwarf criiping down there in a dirt.

Time passed. Laying on the grass helped nothing. She had to get up and get back to the fortress - the only place where her boy and girl could have lived in happiness.

    - I really need a drink, I guess.

I expect to go for 2 hours, no longer than 4.

I am so proud of my first fort.

I am having a lot more migrant waves recently "despite the danger". This game is so awesome, it makes me come back despite all the frustration I expirience. I had second werebeast attack recently and lost 12 dorfs.
I've never done so much micromanagment in my entire life.
The funny thing is - I don't even like stratagies! I never played any of them because of boring gameplay and overcomplicated UI.
But DF hit me in my gamer G-spot. For the long time I dreamed about perfect game, and my idea about it was "more possibilities=better game". It's like my mind was synked with Tarns.
Anyway, can you guys give me some advices on how to efficiently train and equip my military squad?
