    Intelligent undead are kinda awesome

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 08:59 AM PDT

So a few years ago I was sieged by the undead. I just kinda holed up while they poked around for a year, but I did end up catching a dwarf doomed butcher in a cage. I stuck him in my stockpile and promptly forgot about him.

Flash forward to the present, I was under siege by around eighty goblins. Quite a small siege by the standards of my world, which often sees goblin sieges with over two hundred invaders. My military is actually up and running, and I think capable of fighting this one off. But I notice this cage with a dwarf in it. At first I thought it was a justice system bug until I remembered the doomed butcher guy.

So I figure I've got to get rid of this guy, might as well let the goblins solve my problem for me. Set up his cage in my siege entrance, open the gates and pull the lever.

To my shock, I quickly realized that I had been sitting on a terrifying engine of death and destruction for years. This "doomed butcher" absolutely demolished the goblin force, single handedly. During the course of the fight he went from a simple swordsdwarf doomed butcher to a swordmaster. His silver two handed sword claimed 36 of the goblins. His bronze shield claimed five. How many he slew with his own hands I don't know.

After crushing this siege, this guy just casually saunters out, stopping only to kill an unfortunate goblin who crossed his path trying to escape. And then just...walks off the map. I am quite scared he'll come back with friends. The cherry on top is that both of his legs were badly mangled, and it seems like he was just rolling around the entire time, like some sort of goblin killing roomba.

I was talking about the randomness of DF when ending a stream, when I was interrupted by the randomness of DF kept me from ending the stream.

The only elves in this world are surrounded north, east and west with haunted undead forests, and the south by crusader humans and goblin hordes. Finally a just world!

How do y'all intend to end your gladiator's story?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 02:10 AM PDT

I've written the last of Jeremias' and Adrinna's story, and it'll possibly stay that way till the Losers' Batlle Royale.

    Looming Darkness V - Post Round 2

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 01:34 AM PDT

Jeremias clicked off the mic, his mouth turning into a frown. Nothing would have brought back his best friend.

He looked at the arena pit one more time. Blood stained the floor. Most of it was brown, but there was still a small amount of dull silver mixed in.

Had he meant it when he proclaimed that he would rebuild Earth in Adrinna's stead? Would he be able to do it, alone? Who would even support or believe his cause?

The insane axolotl woman would go on to fight a deranged criminal, he was told. A hyena-man.

At least there would be one less menace to him and the surrounding towns, whichever way the fight went.

Adrinna's map was in his hands. He looked at it, the mark she had made. Hub 036, she had told him. A settlement, now town, of survivors from Earth, of all kinds. Their military was less enlisted soldiers and more of a civilian militia. A milita that wielded improvised firearms and traded ammunition for food and resources, spreading the secrets of gunpowder to a nearby dwarven fortress.

Jeremias made up his mind. He would take his last forty gold coins, and leave as soon as the next round was complete.

But first, he had to meet the odd soldier, cast to unfamiliar lands by arcane power.

The man surely had experiences and stories to tell. And Jeremias would write them down for posterity.

    Reclaim feels like cheating

    Posted: 26 Jul 2020 06:13 PM PDT

I cant shake off the feeling that reclaiming a fort destroyed by (modded) electric zombie axemen or whaterver happened that time, is just cheating. Does anyone feel the same way?

Going through the paces for the first time

    Posted: 26 Jul 2020 04:05 PM PDT

Still trying to learn how to do anything in dwarf fortress. It's only been a week, so I'm sure eventually I'll manage to play into the fall season without restarting.

Took a while to figure out (and I may well be wrong):

    • Waterwheel placement around a pump is picky.
    • Placing it at a T junction infront of the output seemed to block outflow?
    • Ensure the horizontal axel is oriented in the right direction
    cwwwc a P p ~

c= channel (goes down >4 levels below ground level) w= water wheel a= n/s axel P= dark side of pump p= light side of pump ~= murky water source at ground level

    • The above just floods the ground & breaks the axel
    • I'm even more clueless how I'm supposed to hook up a windmill directly to a pump without any gears or axels
    • Trying to use light aquifers for filling a cistern to pump clean water is not straight forward (or I'm impatient)
    • Starting on an 'ideal' map, ocean side with light aquifer levels ~12 tiles south of the embark wagon, no aquifer ~12 tiles north
    • Tried digging out below the aquifer to allow > 1 z-level to accumulate water
    • 3 months has seen the water rise from 1/7 to 3/7
    • Upside is at least it is water with "a dusting of mud", so I know it's clean (?)
    • Embarking
    • Setting individual dwarves with butcher / cheese maker / brewer / carpenter / architect / mason / metalsmith allows for a bloody fast deployment of: Farm workshop, Butcher, Still, Carpenter, Smelter, Mason, Forge if you brought enough wood / stone. Even if they have no levels in the skill
    • Very tempted to have 2x 5-skill miners & throw in a 3rd no-skill miner for the inital digout, as I reach stone very fast & that kills the speed of expansion (I seem t have excess embark points)
    • The light aquifer is so light I can ~ ignore it, just keep digging down to stone, dig out around the staircase & block any risk of aquifer leak with properly dwarven stone walls
    • Learning how !fun! dwarves can be when they decide what potential task they will do next without hyper-micromanagement via dwarf therapist
    • waterfalls / happiness

    • Pretty much ignore farming for the spring & summer, have a dedicated herbalist with 0 levels in brewing

    • Wish I could dedicate a large 'rank 7' area for the herbalist to pick stuff, with some way to summon him home if remaining alcohol # is even < 2x number of dwarves
