Face of my expedition leader, when I told him his group is going to reclaim fortress I have been losing to horde of Sunless Hunters and Demons three times in a row.

    Dwarf > Human

    Posted: 10 Jul 2020 02:23 AM PDT

In the winter of my first year there were two visitors to my fort, a dwarf swordsman and a human hammerman. Both petitioned to stay as monster slayers. I accepted both and they stayed in the dining hall drinking for a while. Eventually the dwarf went through the door into the upper caverns (I forgot to lock it). Not having a way to order the dwarf back up to the fort I locked the door and left him to his fate.

He stayed down there for 3 months, wading through the blood and guts of the troglodytes he slew with his steel sword. When I received the warning that he was dehydrated I unlocked the door to allow him back into the fort for a drink. Unfortunately before I could lock the door again the human charged into the caverns.

I thought we were going to have the same again, a story of triumph to be retold for generations. The human charged the nearest troglodyte and struck him square in the head with his copper hammer... lightly bruising him. In one move the troglodyte severed the hammerman's left hand, causing him to drop his shield in the process. The troglodyte then proceeded (if I've read the combat log correctly) to beat him to death with the gauntlet from his own left hand (I'd like to imagine with the hand still in it).

You can't just chop eyeballs. You really have to mince them and with some exceptional skill. You will notice the difference while you chew.

Getting sieged seems to inevitably lead to tantrum spirals. That's alarming!

    Combat log

    Video

Kill count at the bottom of the post.

The gladiators are forced in to the crowded arena. The crowd cries for blood. The Arena Masters gives the signal to start the killing:

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    1. "The Greased Lightning" bled to death, after Arachnida General Greivances lashed his foot so hard it fell off.

    2. Dander the Irate kills Phantom, the Gremlin Avenger by biting hard and shaking him around by his leg.

    3. Luther Rak kills Mudbug the Pantsless by decapitation.

    4. Jumpy. The un-frog-getable kills Gerome "The Chrome Gnome" Mallone by cleaving his skull.

    5. Fritochip McSwift kills Scully the quick by cleaving his head.

    6. Bean "Greasedust" Farsmile bled to death after Arachnida General Greivances lashed his foot so hard it fell off. There is a pattern here!

    7. Rhox "Pointy Stick" Gurmarkirk bled to death after keeping up a brave face for a long time after Daphne the Daring speared off his left hand.

    8. Chompy Applebane bled to death after Dander the Irate made several holes in him, including his heart.

    9. Luter Rak kills Dan the COFFFIN by decapitation.

    10. Fritochip McSwift kills Tantrum by decapitation.

    11. Dander the Irate kills Daphne the Daring with a swift stab through her mask, face, skull and brain.

    12. Arachnida General Greivances kills Luter Rak with a powerful whipping blow to the head.

    13. Tedrick bled to death after Tlagruldus the Unexpected Cutter bit his left foot and tore up his arteries.

    14. Jumpy. The un-frog-getable kills Tlagruldus the Unexpected Cutter by cleaving his head.

    15. Arachnida General Greivances kills Fritochip McSwift by cleaving his head with a scourge. Brutal!

    16. Dander the Irate bled to death after much suffering as Jumpy, The un-frog-getable spilled his guts and opened his arteries.

    17. Arachnida General Greivances kills Ooshna Odalow, "Slayer of Salt" by whipping the leech man, cutting him in two!

    18. Arachnida General Greivances bled to death after Jumpy, The un-frog-getable removes an arm and a leg (and one of his eyes). What a savage frog man!

    19. Keshra the Dacapitator bled to death after Jumpy, The un-frog-getable chopped her to pieces. Reptile women don't die easily, but I'm sure she wishes she did. A disgusting show, the crowd goes wild!

Jumpy walks around the arena, soaking in the applause.

    Jumpy, The un-frog-getable 5 kills
    Arachnida General Greivances 5 kills
    Dander the Irate 3 kills
    Luther Rak 2 kills
    Fritochip McSwift 2 kills
    Daphne the Daring 1 kill
Tlagruldus the Unexpected Cutter 1 kill

    But wait.....

    Lets count.

    1. Kills.

    1. Gladiators

    Something doesn't add up.

Otskul Oksul is discovered by the clean-up crew. He claims he was just resting and waiting for somebody to fight him. He also claims Jumpy most likely was hiding from him, and that he is not afraid to fight him.

The Arena Masters decided to take him up on his word and clear the main arena for them both.

Tonight there will be a fight, free of charge:

    Combat Log

    Video

Almost as soon as the fight starts, the duelists get a hit on each other: with Jumpy's scimitar lodging in kobold's hand, and Ostkul's dagger penetrating into frogman's lower ribs. In the next strike, the kobold's second hand is severed, leaving him without a weapon. But Otstkul does not give up just yet, sinking teeth into the Unfroggetable. Jumpy continues cutting up his opponent, as the kobold seemingly tries to eat the frogman alive. Still, lifeforce slowly leaves Otkul, and soon enough, under the unrelenting barrage of blows from the swordsman, he bleeds out completely. Jumpy raises his sword high, shouting out in a deserved victory cry.

Congratulations, Jumpy! You live to die another day.

Got the newest Newb Pack for Windows.

I have selected that it should start when I fire up the game, but it doesn't. I try to start it manually from the "Utilities" menu, still no dice. Anyone else having this issue?

A Scene from the First Winter Festival

    Posted: 10 Jul 2020 03:55 AM PDT

Shrieks of merry laughter echo behind Kulet as he rests alone in the quiet temple. Everyone else is in the great hall - sharing stories over their lavish roasts and goblets of dwarven ale.

It had been a tenuous year - what with the continued stress put on his people by the torrential rain and blistering heat. They had gone underground a long time ago - but more than half of them still made regular trips to the surface. For what reason it varied; sometimes to gather plants, othertimes for fishing or dragging unruly animals back to their pastures.

Sometime last Spring, he presented his plan for a surface structure. Nothing complex - just something to keep the ducks in and the rain out. It went well at first, but then came the monsoons and summer heat... so even now in late winter, the roof lays unfinished.

Kulet swirls what little wine is left in his mug. He is not one to push his people - especially with all of the minor assaults going on. The master chef keeps getting food scraps flung at him while he cooks - seemingly from nowhere… and many of the elder yaks and poultry are "dying mysteriously," with their hides being put to immediate use-

"Kulet?" A voice asks, breaking the expedition leader from his trance.

"Tosid? What's wrong - has the great hall run out of ciders yet?"

"No no," She said with a chuckle. "I was just going to pray to Deler… I didn't think to see anyone else here... Are you…?"

"Just my first glass, Tos. Thought to commune with Ikal while the singing… improves."

Tosid smiles. "More than fair - I'll be on the other side then," She began, holding up a brass octagonal coin pulled from her leather dress. "I'll try to keep it down."

He watched as she started her ritual, the incantations and coin bouncing off the far wall in practiced rhythm. Deler was the god of wealth and many of Kulet's people were his followers; but as for Kulet himself? He prayed to Ikal, the Trustworthy One: God of Oaths.

And he made a vow to these people. He has an oath to keep, and as Tosid spoke to Deler and distant singers sang to their audience, Kulet meditated in silence.
