Ask about anything related to Dwarf Fortress - including the game, utilities, bugs, problems you're having, mods, etc. You will get fast and friendly responses in this thread.

Read the sidebar before posting! It has information on a range of game packages for new players, and links to all the best tutorials and quick-start guides. If you have read it and that hasn't helped, mention that!

You should also take five minutes to search the wiki - if tutorials or the quickstart guide can't help, it usually has the information you're after. You can find the previous questions thread here.

If you can answer questions, please sort by new and lend a hand - linking to a helpful resource (eg wiki page) is fine.

How to force yourself to keep going

    Posted: 27 Apr 2020 06:03 AM PDT

So after a while most fortresses tend to grow rather big, immigration wave after immigration wave. Which tends to lead to more disasters, more need to change the shape of the fortress, and more reallocating of resources and such, how do you all keep going after you lose your master blacksmith due to being pushed into the water by a troglodyte? How do you keep going after your military that you spent resources and time training all turn into werebeasts? I get that losing it's fun, it's the keep going that I find less than lackluster. Hahaha.

Any tips on how to keep up the interest in your fort is welcome.

    A Discussion:

Looking back on when you first got into this strange, archaic, astoundingly complex mess of ACII graphics containing a beautiful game, I'm sure everyone has had at least a few "aha!" moments that deeply changed how they played the game from that point on.

What was your favorite learning moment like that?

Or to put it another way; What do you wish you had learned way, way sooner?

When I saw this I almost cried

I accidentally convicted my expedition miner of espionage while reviewing potential suspects. Today I learned you can't undo a sentence once you convict someone. 'Miner 1' was immediately sentenced to a 255 day stint in prison. The rivers here freeze up into solid ice in the winter and it took me awhile to figure out why I was being spammed with "..cancels give water, no water source". Then DFHack pops up to warn me "'Miner 1' is dehydrated!".

I attempted to build a lever to open the cage but before the task was complete, 'Miner 1' dies of dehydration. Upon reviewing the contents of the cage, I saw this:

How do you enjoy the game?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 07:02 PM PDT

Do you play to explore certain mechanics? Do you like to have a big fort full of industry? Or do you do just enough to support a military? Do you modify game files for anything you find preferential? Do you have any interesting design choices or gameplay strategies you're willing to share? Are there things you do personally for the sake of efficiency? Are there any gameplay elements that you personally fixate on, out of interest or curiosity?

Just picking brains. I really want to know what people do and how people enjoy this game because I think I could learn in this manner. I think others could learn in this way, too, and it may inspire people to play the game in new ways.
