    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 05:07 PM PDT

Ask about anything related to Dwarf Fortress - including the game, utilities, bugs, problems you're having, mods, etc. You will get fast and friendly responses in this thread.

Read the sidebar before posting! It has information on a range of game packages for new players, and links to all the best tutorials and quick-start guides. If you have read it and that hasn't helped, mention that!

You should also take five minutes to search the wiki - if tutorials or the quickstart guide can't help, it usually has the information you're after. You can find the previous questions thread here.

If you can answer questions, please sort by new and lend a hand - linking to a helpful resource (eg wiki page) is fine.

    [No Mods] Elf Fortress

    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 10:35 AM PDT

The following is true about my current fortress:

The baroness, her three children, and the baron consort (RIP) are all elves.

    The mayor is an elf.

The broker and bookkeeper are elves.

The captain of the guard is an elf. The sheriffs were all dwarves but the first guard captain was an elf. The last sheriff was replaced because he was getting haggard and wasn't stable enough for the new job but he has his own theories.

The chief medical dwarf, for which the title does not change, is an elf as was the previous chief medical dwarf.

Now they're culturally dwarvish elves. Elves that chose to come live in a volcano with crazed tree-genociding stone lovers. They cut trees, demand clear-glass windows for their baronly bedrooms, and use steel weapons (and usually bronze armor because I'm not made out of steel over here). But virtually the entire ruling class consists of elves.

Most of my military are dwarves but there is an entire unit of elves.

Basically what happened is this: I wanted to make as multicultural a fort as possible. Best case scenario for me would have been equal parts dwarves, elves, and goblins with a minority of humans (because I didn't realize, as I now know, that you can have humans make human sized-clothes. It has been a learning experience). I was able to get huge piles of elves in the form of large 10+ member poet troupes, usually including a goblin or two, petitioning for residency. In fact I got all my goblins, which had a population of 6 at their peak, from elf poet troupes.

Then I went way over my population cap, and over a series of endless sieges my dwarf population was whittled away while my elves, who mostly hung out singing in the tavern instead of being outside working where you can get killed, stayed safe. They were also the only group breeding. Eventually they outnumbered the dwarves in their own fortress. An elf who spent all day in the tavern befriending other elves was made mayor. I had also been activating all of the healthcare labors on elf poets as they were becoming citizens during a medical crisis, so the best diagnostician is always inevitably an elf so there's the chief medical dwarf.

The last of my original seven dwarves died, dropping the axe with which he had killed many, many, legendary beasts. A giantess, a cyclops, an ettin, a forgotten beast that was functionally a dragon, the axe had a diverse kill list. Then an elf grabbed it, killed nothing, trained with it for a while, and gave it a name in Elvish.

Then we conquered a goblin pit and became a barony, and I like to pick a citizen with a family for the baron position if at all possible, and like I said the only group with children were elves so I ended up going with an elf. I had really been liking the idea of a dwarf baron and an elf mayor before for my multicultural fortress but it was basically an elf fortress at this point so I just went with it.

Eventually there was a big elf kill-off when goblins surprised us by attacking from a different direction than normal and killed some usually-idle citizens who were taking something apart (long ass story), where even the baron consort was killed, and several waves of immigrants mean the dwarves are now the majority in the dwarf fortress again (by a slim margin), but most of the long term residents, and therefore the ruling class, are elves. Dwarfy, plump helmet wine drinking, steel axe swinging, tree cutting, stone trinket making elves, but still elves.

I have decided to cultivate this intentionally now. The elves will be the aristocracy and the dwarves the working class. Going for a kind of eloi/morloch kind of thing. We're also so isolated that the only way to expand is to conquer goblin pits. So the elves can rule all kinds of underclasses from their volcano lair.

    DFHack Ideas

    Posted: 17 Apr 2020 11:07 AM PDT

Getting back into DF and realized we could use a few new tools:

    1. PauseOnBroker: Pause and alert when the broker reaches the trade depot
    2. FullMoon Alert: Pause the game before weretransformation begin
    3. Remove Werecurse: Would be nice if we could get a task added to Altars to pray and have a chance to remove a random werecurse on our dwarves. Would take some DFHackery I think to poll dwarves who have a werecurse.
    4. (Not so much DFHack but more Legends Viewer) an export site history to just pull a given site's info into something like a PDF (publishSite command?)
    5. Need a find option for Justice Conviction screen
    6. Still need a hack for stockpiles to allow decorated\undecorated. In that same vein would be nice if we could get a hack to forbid decorated items for workshop tasks (so your dwarves don't keep decorating the same table 500 times).
    7. A toggle hack to set refuse and burial as max priority so after siege cleanup is quicker
    8. best for last: a dfhack that toggles the alert level during a siege and after a few days toggles the alert back after the siege has ended.

Just some thoughts now that I am coming back to DF.
