    A true hero amongst dwarves.

    Posted: 10 Apr 2020 10:01 AM PDT

Olon wasn't your average dwarf. He was a necromancer and an overall pretty good guy who treasured loyalty above all else.

One day while the majority of the fortress's forces were out raiding enemy lands we became under siege by a horde of trolls and goblins. The traps took care of about half of them, but they would not be enough. It was up to Olon, his small squad of auxiliary defenders and our pack of war dogs.

Olon fought valiantly killing 4 trolls and raising them as zombies to fight on our side. Olon was sadly overwhelmed and perished in that battle, but his legacy lives on in the guardians he has left in his place that continue to defend our home from Invaders. A gold statue in his likeness has been placed in his favorite library so that all who visit will know the face of a true hero!

    So. Much. !!FUN!!

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 07:29 PM PDT

So long, Metropolis Atulducim, "FordedWork." I haven't played DF in... Almost a year? Due to kids and general life stuff. When I started tonight I had over 200 citizens. I'm now down to 3 adults that I can assign jobs to and 2 of them are either melancholy or oblivious. Wait, scratch that, melancholy guy was just found dehydrated. 2 adults.

The evening started with a web shooting forgotten beast named Lozuos Stospspos. That thing decimated my fort and all of those monster slayers I had approved to join my fort sat in the library and did nothing (how do I do that from happening??). Finally it was gone.

Less than five minutes later we got attacked by a human wereape. We didn't end up killing it before it transformed back into a human and left, but it had bitten 3 dwarves through their clothes. Naively I thought that since it was through their clothing they would be fine... Nope. A month later and I have 3 wereapes in my hospital. Hospital is next to the library so finally some of my monster slayers stepped in. But now I'm down to one oblivious dwarf (after a third wereape attack), miasmas everywhere, ghosts wandering around, and one petition but no officials capable of handling these matters.

    Oh wait. MIGRANTS!!! FORDEDWORK LIVES!!!

Edited: one missed wereape child just took my fortress from 42 to 15 citizens, only 4 of whom I can assign duties to. I love this game so much.

    Steam Release Achievement Suggestions!

    Posted: 10 Apr 2020 11:29 AM PDT

A self-sufficient fortress is great and all, but true Overseers prove their worth by spending 1000 hours trying to get a slade artifact and a clown zoo. I'm hoping the Steam Achievements capture the dwarven spirit so.

Will these be used by the devs? Probably not. Will it be a fun way to fill a few minutes of isolation? Absolutely.

Inspired by this comment by u/helweek:

Cat-riculture. Make 1 of each of all possible items (cat soap, cat leather armor, cat bones totem, etc) from cat meat, cat fat, cat leather, cat bones, cat fur.

Here's the wiki page on the current "win conditions" for inspiration. The dorfier the better!

    Some Prophetic Updates!

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 04:51 PM PDT

This is all related to my previous post here about Urist Archrift, the Prophet, a visitor to my temple, The Sanctuary of Death in the fortress of Claspedshrine, and her mysterious proclamations. The year is currently 253.

I copied and retired the fort to a Legends to a new save and started browsing. I found the location of Shovetorches from the map in Legends Viewer, but everything else below is purely from Legends mode in the vanilla game.

Arban Stronghammer is a deity that occurs in the myths of The Everlasting Lash. Depicted as a male dwarf, and associated with victory, war, and fortresses. Seems, uh, pretty bog-standard for a dwarven deity...

The Everlasting Lash is a dwarven civilization founded in the year 1, with bajillions of historical events. Tons of sporting events and so many other things I can't even summarize.

Tomuslitast, "Shovetorches," is a fortress founded in 64 by The Frenzy of Gates. The Cathedral of Knives was founded in Shovetorches in 67. Nothing too exciting seems to have happened there other than our above-noted Urist Archrift decided to become a prophet after praying in The Cathedral of Knives in 221. I can't tell if The Cathedral of Knives is dedicated to a particular deity or not. It was abandoned in 252 but I can see no reason why.

The Frenzy of Gates is a dwarven mercenary order founded in 55, linked to The Spectral Doctrine, and dedicated to the mastery of the spear and the short sword. (While you were drinking plump helmet wine, I was studying the spear and the sword.... ah, ahem, anyway...) The Frenzy of Gates has a long and storied career as mercenaries, and appeared to be quite successful, having been "hired by the attackers" in many dozens, if not hundreds, of battles.

Urist Rovodvukrig "Urist Archrift" was a female dwarf born in 202. (So she's 51 right now.) She started life as a brewer, fought in a few dozen battles, became a pilgrim in 221. Interestingly, Urist and the elf Renuna Snarlingequal cemented the bonds of friendship amidst the horror of combat shortly after Urist became a pilgrim. Urist and Ducim Paddlefloor became lovers in 246, and in 250, Urist married ... Kadol Pulleyyawn. She is an ardent worshipper of both Arban Stronghammer and Rakust, with some other deities thrown in for flavor. Why she says that Arban Stronghammer will destroy Shovetorches, I have no idea. Perhaps she's just koo-koo.

Shovetorches is a considerable distance to the very Northwest of the world, as seen here, but I will try to send an expeditionary force to investigate if possible! Urist is still in Claspedshrine, going on about Arban and Shovetorches, and recently she has been joined by a human Prophet, who I know nothing about yet.

Sorry if this is a long post (I've spent well over an hour just digging through Legends Mode and documenting what I found here), but as you can see, DF generates a tremendously rich history that's very easy to get lost in once you start down that rabbit hole. Never underestimate the beauty of Legends and how vital and active a world created by Dwarf Fortress truly is!

    Damned one Fort

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 06:47 PM PDT

Is there any vanilla way of making sure a necromancer civ dwarf will create a damned one, since they dont seem to attack other members of your fort?
