    Posted: 10 Apr 2020 05:29 PM PDT

Hello everyone! I am very new to dwarf fortress and i have a few questions about the game.

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 06:59 AM PDT

As a starter i was wondering if there is some sort of texurepack that i can use that makes the game look better/clearer? Is there a mod that changes the text-based graphics to pixel ones? Or does someone have any other good visual/usefull mods that i can use? Secondly i was wondering if someone has any good tips or usefull advice that i can use? Thank you!

Edit: thanks for all the advice! You all really helped me a lot!

    Agent is the elected Mayor!

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 06:02 AM PDT

As the title says, my citizens elected a dwarf. She uses a human name. at first I thought of it as a vampire, but no drained bodies were found. I'm pretty sure she is an agent. How do I confirm this? Should I keep her as a mayor? If not, how do I deal with this situation? Feel free to share similar stories!

Compiled list of all my adventure mode tips and tricks, bug work-arounds.

    Posted: 10 Apr 2020 06:22 PM PDT

After a very long and thorough tour in adventure mode I had to deal with an immense amount of bugs here are some tips:

Companion lists are bugged, when your retire and start again, know that it will duplicate your order lists: shift O. You can shit O, leave, to reset the list, but companions and pets will get free reign afterward so make sure they are part of the party during the initial un-retire

Pet are very bugged, they will sometimes wander off, sometimes be lost and will even become hostile to your other party members. Do not use pets and mounts as of 47.04.

Retiring can fix alot of problems, your adventurers will sometimes completely vanish off the map or runoff fighting and when your engage fast travel, will be left behind to never be seen from again, just retire and and un-retire them to your party to bring them back.

Again, pets are extremely bugged. If you lost your pet and decide to offer thenlm through the conversation, k, menu to another entity, your game will crash.

Did I say pets are bugged, because they are bugged. Pets will not be able to get through doors, which will leave them stranded and eventually abandoned.

Sometimes, the game does not like to load a specific chunk and will crash immediately. I found waiting a while works when you are in the wild. This saved me from a particularly nasty crash as I was trecking through the tundra.

Sometimes, the game will crash at a site. You can retire at that site and un-retire to fix this.

If you tell your party members to wait at a site and then go off exploring on your own and come near the site enough and enter tactical mode shift+ e, you will switch to a party member, but the original member will vanish off the map. Again, retire and un-retire and only venture with your full party.

All party members should read the slab of a Demon, if you are going to bind it. Otherwise the Demon will be hostile to the party members that didn't read the slab. Be aware of strangeness, where party members will autonomously impersonate the name on the slab, press the k key and assume identity, then press x, no identity to return them to their original name.

Fast pets do seem to effect speed of fast travel when you mount them, but everyone has to be mounted.

Carrying splints does seem to effect recovery of torn ligaments when you fast travel. Needs more testing.

The population of a site seems to be representative, as in if you kill 100 goblins at a site with pop 12000, the sites pop will lower by 1000 to 2000. Killed 300 goblins at a site of 12000, lowered the goblin pop from 12k to under 9k.

Scalding steam and boiling dust do not effect your adventurers. Had a Demon servant with poisonous vapors that would attack and explode in boiling dust did not bother my adventurers at all. Had steam based angels that exploded when killed. Did no damage.

The main part of goblin civs, just your regular, none- military dwarves are generally not aggressive. A brilliant design choice and quite realistic. So assaulting Dark Towers can be an easy slaughter. However, there are patrols around that will be military and be agressive.

Once you bind one demon, other Goblin Demon lords no longer become agressive on first contact. They will happily chat with you for hours.

If you use Legends viewer and an artifact says "possessed by" a certain entity and you find that entity they will not have that artifact so do not rely on that info.

Did I mention how bugged pets are, because pets that have been separated from their master will sometimes wander the map, denoted by the * icon. You can manage to track them down and have them follow you, but it is an effort in frustration.

Pets bought on the character creation screen with points will be much more likely to stick around than pets found or created through rolling dice.

Party members will not jump. So you have to manually jump them over gaps or else they will be lost if you stray too far. Especially useful when in a dark fortress with its many pits.

Dwarves have an underground road that links their main sites and can be traveled just like the overmap. If a site is too far into the mountains, you can use the underground roads to get to a capital or a deep-dwarf site via fast travel.

Some races are capped at "competent" for swimming. Good training for endurance, however so swim when you can.

Sometimes, when building your own site, the game does not like the placement of certain blueprints and will tell you "2" hours to complete. This is a lie, you can work for 3 days and nothing will get done. Remove those blueprints then remake to fix.

Dark Fortresses generally have a road road that leads right to the tower without going through all the pits. Look for it to make your life alot easier.

If you can't find a trader in a trading depot, you can shout to find one.

Dwarven forts with artifacts will have them all scattered randomly on the level above the magma forges.

That's all for now. Will leave more when I find them.

Help me please - Adventure Mode

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 04:13 AM PDT

Hello I've started playing Adventure Mode but I dont know how to put skillpoints into something in the beginning screen when making a character, how do I increase the amount of skillpoints gone into a skill? What button do I press to do that because when making my character every button I press, it makes the skill go down. :(

Kali Linux gate keeping is not Cash money...

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 03:22 AM PDT

I have seen alot of requests from people looking to install dwarf fortress on Kali Linux. Rather than encouraging the journey , alot of gatekeeping happens with people saying "Kali is bad for noobs , dont do it, your a noob". Terrible I say, even more so when the solve is so easy. In the current distro of kali all you need to do is install g++. I beleive "apt-get install g++", then "apt-get -f install" should get you going. There may be another package you need but it should tell you in the error read out. Just do the same for that. That is all I needed to get my lazy newb pack up and running . Sure, kali is AWFUL for games. It isnt even a normal debian distro. I think it is testing or experimental. That doesnt matter. What matters is involving people in knowledge and giving the small steps to enjoy thier computers!

I dont like the new steam tileset

    Posted: 10 Apr 2020 07:59 PM PDT

Its because it doesnt leave enough to the imagination, it doesnt have the ambiguous design of the inteded ascii art. What I mean by this is that any art, any purposeful creation of entertainment, always creates a connection between its perception (its image) and the viewer. However, a good tileset (arriving at its inteded purpose), will not just be representation of something but add a certain magic, maybe a tone to play out in the rhythym or music of the game as it continues, not only being refreshing to the audience but seemingly having a place in the created world of the user, a place of in the unique fortress of the player. My problem with the tileset is it too direct. It looks too much like another game, theres too much restriction on what something could be, or a how a dwarf could a door. Reconciling the finite, sure theres only so mnay ways it could be done. But making the set more open ended for all the variety of woods (for a door), or cheeses for a animals, etc. The only other way to maintain the ratio for imagination (if the tileset continues to develop like this) and presentation (it could shift into a different ratio, up or down, but it would have to have a different sweet spot, but personally id like it to be more open ended), would be to add soft animations. But FPS death with dwarf fortress. All in all, i'd like to see some small revisions to the tileset just to make it less of a symbol, less of a wall and more of a door.
