What raw changes do you usually do to your game

    Posted: 22 Mar 2020 08:24 AM PDT

What creatures or other things do you customize to better fit your tastes?

    Personally :

    • I give normal dragons wings, so they are consistant with the cave dragons description, and they are more fearsome. To do this, add the [FLIER] tag to dragons, and add 2WINGS to their [BODY] tag. (I put it between TAIL and 2EYES like for cave dragons, I don't know if the order changes anything)

    • I make dragons and cave dragons reach their max body size at the age of 600 instead of 1000, so when I play in 350-400 years old worlds, most original dragons have their full size and are more dangerous. Their children also grow up faster. I remind you that recently hatched dragons are the size of a fox. To do this, set [BODY_SIZE:600:0:25000000] for dragons and [BODY_SIZE:600:0:15000000] for cave dragons (basically, replace the 1000 number by 600).

    • Some animals should be more agressive, and not flee even when approached by human-sized creatures. I remove the [BENIGN] tag for hippos, elephants, and wild boars.

    • These same animals should be more aggressive. Hippos are infamous for being very territorial and aggressive IRL, one of the most dangerous African animals. Wild boars can be rather aggressive too. But I don't want to make them behave like predators. So I add the [PRONE_TO_RAGE:10] tag to hippos, and [PRONE_TO_RAGE:1] to wild boars, to simulate random aggressivity. I don't know how to recreate elephant musth in DF.

And you, what modifications do you do to creatures or other elements of DF?

Lore for "smaller", 550 year worlds is whack

    Posted: 22 Mar 2020 04:08 AM PDT

So I've been generating a whole bunch of "smaller" worlds in Dwarf Fortress with 550 year histories, and my dwarf civilizations are all 60% goblin and stuff, except for one which was a dwarf civ that was completely lacking a king because a necromancer had almost put the finishing touches on wiping everyone out. Even one of my purer civs had some footraces the winners of which were an elf and a goblin. Another one of my less evil dwarf civilizations (not necromancer led etc.) had elf and goblin kings.

So I booted up 4.3 and...100% dwarf civilization, no necromancer king, at war with goblins, much less disturbing. I then decided I would make some more worlds just to see if that was a fluke. Sure enough, next couple dwarf civs are goblin-ruled.

So it's more a factor of running a small world for long enough that causes dwarves to become ruled by goblins and necromancers. Setting low-savagery seems to help dwarf civilizations remain dwarf-ruled. Mostly though, "smaller" worlds tend to get run over by towers and tend to be either extremely egalitarian or extremely prone to being conquered by deposing a throne whatever it is. "Small" worlds seem to be less extreme in this way.
