Posted: 11 Feb 2020 06:23 AM PST To play Dwarf Fortress in a terminal with the original IBM VGA9 font, you need the following:
Installing the fontIf you are using Ubuntu, installing the font is easy. Download and extract the tar file, double-click the extracted ttf file to view it with the "Fonts" program and then click the "Install" button. Configuring your terminalUbuntu comes with Gnome Terminal by default, but it has no easy way to disable bold text, so I recommend Xfce Terminal. Install it by opening Gnome Terminal (a.k.a "Terminal" on Ubuntu) and run To set the font in Xfce, go to Preferences > Appearance, uncheck "Use system font" click the button to the right of the checkbox to open a dialog. The dialog allows you to chose any font currently installed on your computer. Search for "IBM VGA9" and select "Px437 IBM VGA9 Regular" To disable bold text in Xfce, go to Preferences > Appearance, and uncheck "Allow bold text" It's important to disable bold text because the font is not designed to be rendered in bold. To remove the scrollbar, go to Preferences > General and, and set the "Scrollbar is" drop-down to "Disabled" To remove the menubar, either right-click the window and uncheck "Show menubar" or go to Preferences > Appearance, and uncheck "Display menubar in new windows" (Requires you to close and re-open) To fullscreen the terminal, either right-click the window and check "Fullscreen" or just press F11. Optionally, if you want the text to be arranged in a square grid instead of a rectangular grid, you can go to Preferences > Appearance and set "Cell spacing" to about 1.7. That will space out the text horizontally making everything square. Configuring Dwarf FortressTo play Dwarf Fortress in text mode you need to edit one line of one text file. Starting from the root directory of Dwarf Fortress, open NoteThe original IBM VGA9 font does not have beards on the smiley faces. If anyone is willing to edit the IBM VGA9 TrueType font to have beards on the smiley faces, please share it. EnjoyIf you configured everything correctly, your terminal should look nearly identical to the SDL version of Dwarf Fortress and the text will have beautiful sub-pixel anti-aliasing and you can treat Dwarf Fortress like any other command-line program. If you have any issues, let me know and I will try to help. [link] [comments] | ||

FYI: Raids, and the way they bug out your equipment/save. Posted: 11 Feb 2020 01:14 AM PST Raids are currently very buggy, and I do not recommend you perform them. The problems are: 1) Raids bug out your equipment assignments fort-wide. In Toady's words after he checked out a bugged save:
Have you ever noticed your soldiers go into battle without their assigned helm, or sword, or left high boot... and so on? This is one of the causes, possibly the main cause. They show up as green check-marked on the military screen but they actually aren't wearing them. Part of this is because they get "double assigned" due to the equipment assignments being wiped out. So Urist has a -steel short sword-, but Makost is also assigned the same sword. This shows up as a green check mark for both dwarves in the military screen, both dwarves think they have the weapon so Makost doesn't pick a new one. Incidentally, this bug can also be caused by bins, so don't ever use bins for your armor+weapon stockpiles. 2) Raids corrupt your equipment in general. This will cause unavoidable game crashes at random times, making your save unplayable until fixed by a bugfix update. Toady:
Now, the good thing is that Toady is (hopefully) fixing these bugs for the next bugfix release (.02). Wait for that before you raid anything:
