The war of Munching began in 293. Dwarfs, humans and elves have been raiding one goblin castle for 757 years.

This is a a crazy war I came across in legends viewer.
The war of Munching began in 293. Although it says the Rains of Horror (the Goblin government) won 3401 battles, this is just not true.

    An overview of the war.
    The Violent Nations: 751 raids.
    The Problematic Work: 724 raids.
    The Oaken Apes: 541 raids.
The Standards of Vigor: 678 raids.
The Kingdoms of Imprisoning: 707 raids.
The Vegetation of Showering: 751 raids.
    Total number of raids: 3401

It is currently the year 1050, and the Rains of Horror have just suffered the 3579th pillaging of Tootherrors

How to play Dwarf Fortress in a Linux terminal using the original IBM VGA9 font (Screenshots Included)

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 06:23 AM PST

    Screenshots

    Screenshots (mirror)

To play Dwarf Fortress in a terminal with the original IBM VGA9 font, you need the following:

    • Linux (e.g. Ubuntu)
    • Dwarf Fortress (Download)
    • TrueType version of the IBM VGA9 font (Download)
    • Terminal that allows you to disable bold text (e.g. Xfce Terminal)

    Installing the font

If you are using Ubuntu, installing the font is easy. Download and extract the tar file, double-click the extracted ttf file to view it with the "Fonts" program and then click the "Install" button.

    Configuring your terminal

Ubuntu comes with Gnome Terminal by default, but it has no easy way to disable bold text, so I recommend Xfce Terminal. Install it by opening Gnome Terminal (a.k.a "Terminal" on Ubuntu) and run sudo apt install xfce4-terminal Open Xfce Terminal by just searching for it and clicking it like any other app.

To set the font in Xfce, go to Preferences > Appearance, uncheck "Use system font" click the button to the right of the checkbox to open a dialog. The dialog allows you to chose any font currently installed on your computer. Search for "IBM VGA9" and select "Px437 IBM VGA9 Regular"

To disable bold text in Xfce, go to Preferences > Appearance, and uncheck "Allow bold text" It's important to disable bold text because the font is not designed to be rendered in bold.

To remove the scrollbar, go to Preferences > General and, and set the "Scrollbar is" drop-down to "Disabled"

To remove the menubar, either right-click the window and uncheck "Show menubar" or go to Preferences > Appearance, and uncheck "Display menubar in new windows" (Requires you to close and re-open)

To fullscreen the terminal, either right-click the window and check "Fullscreen" or just press F11.

Optionally, if you want the text to be arranged in a square grid instead of a rectangular grid, you can go to Preferences > Appearance and set "Cell spacing" to about 1.7. That will space out the text horizontally making everything square.

    Configuring Dwarf Fortress

To play Dwarf Fortress in text mode you need to edit one line of one text file. Starting from the root directory of Dwarf Fortress, open data/init/init.txt and change the line that says [PRINT_MODE:2D] to [PRINT_MODE:TEXT] Now if you run Dwarf Fortress in your terminal, the game will just print the graphics as text in your terminal instead of opening a separate window.

    Note

The original IBM VGA9 font does not have beards on the smiley faces. If anyone is willing to edit the IBM VGA9 TrueType font to have beards on the smiley faces, please share it.

    Enjoy

If you configured everything correctly, your terminal should look nearly identical to the SDL version of Dwarf Fortress and the text will have beautiful sub-pixel anti-aliasing and you can treat Dwarf Fortress like any other command-line program.

If you have any issues, let me know and I will try to help.

FYI: Raids, and the way they bug out your equipment/save.

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 01:14 AM PST

Raids are currently very buggy, and I do not recommend you perform them. The problems are:

    1) Raids bug out your equipment assignments fort-wide. In Toady's words after he checked out a bugged save:

Looks like it is related to the raid issues - whole swaths of the fort-wide (rather than squad level) equipment tracking has been wiped, and this would have repercussions on assignments

Have you ever noticed your soldiers go into battle without their assigned helm, or sword, or left high boot... and so on? This is one of the causes, possibly the main cause.

They show up as green check-marked on the military screen but they actually aren't wearing them. Part of this is because they get "double assigned" due to the equipment assignments being wiped out.

So Urist has a -steel short sword-, but Makost is also assigned the same sword. This shows up as a green check mark for both dwarves in the military screen, both dwarves think they have the weapon so Makost doesn't pick a new one.

Incidentally, this bug can also be caused by bins, so don't ever use bins for your armor+weapon stockpiles.

    2) Raids corrupt your equipment in general. This will cause unavoidable game crashes at random times, making your save unplayable until fixed by a bugfix update.

    Toady:

Hmm, it all points toward an item being deleted prematurely (and the then-corrupted data being maintained in the equipment lists), but it doesn't yet appear to be anything as simple as a forgotten delete or double push. The symptoms aren't giving me more than this, so I'm going to go for some more logging, and then try a few of the other equipment bugs that may cause this incidentally (odd assignment behaviors and duplication errors.)

Now, the good thing is that Toady is (hopefully) fixing these bugs for the next bugfix release (.02). Wait for that before you raid anything:

I've found one problem with the raid code so far that would act somewhat like this, so I'm hopeful we'll have some progress in the next version. I'll also try to patch up saves as best I can, though once they start doing multiple assignments (or worse yet, real raid corruption), that gets harder.

Mete Closehead, The tall king, the story of how a human necromancer became king of the dwarves for 200 years

    https://preview.redd.it/gpoks3t418g41.png?width=299&format=png&auto=webp&s=4e16c672888a2fdba67c56ad6efb6d44a2aa46b1

Mete Closehead is a human of the occult nation born in 81, he began his long life as a dancer for a religious group called the Sweet Fellowship, a cult dedicated to the the godess of food "Queh Bellytummies". in 135, after having written 3 books and formed 3 apprentices to dancing, he became the Sacred garnish of the Sweet fellowship. The same year he decided to settle to the dwarven fortress of Ropestock, a fortress of the Incinerated Lanterns dwarves. In 159, After a long life, Mete becomes obsessed with his own mortality and seeks to extend his life by any means. Fortunatly for him, necromancers are almost common in this world and 5 years later he meets the human necromancer Strildo Squashedstrikes who takes him under his wing. He joins her at Spiritorb in 170, the mightiest tower in the world that corrupted an entire peninsula but still fails to break the unbreakables towns of the occult nation to this day. He will spend the 10 next years mastering the art of necromancy, he will have an apprentice, A dwarf noble from Ropestock called Atir Inkworked and wrote an essay called "Mastering Spiritorb".

However Mete will not be satisfied with his life in the tower, he probably only used them to reach immortality. He began plotting in the fortress of Ropestock. In 179, he tries to corrupt the dwarf Zutthan Laborbreak to have the law enforcement look the other way from him. Critical failure. He gets convicted for bribery and is imprisonned for a term of 5 years. In prison he tries to plot with his old apprentice Atir to get him out jail and eliminate Zutthan but their plans fail one by one. He does manage to obtain a legendary crossbow "the eater of bandits" which he makes a family heirloom.in 187, he gets out of prison and settled for a while in the monastery fo Bunnyage dedicated to "Sapa the ace of dominion" human god of rulership, but quickly got tired of it, he then moved from hamlets to hamlets, still fixated on taking his revenge of Zutthan, he finally manages to get her assassinated 20 years later. Meanwhile, he succeeded to infiltrate a lot of agents in strategic places, weaving a criminal web across dwarf and human lands alike.

In 248, he founds the "meandering lords" and builds his tower of Distincttricks where he trains another apprentice, the dwarf Ollon MirrorMartyr, which he will use as an agent to infiltrate the dwarves of the Incinerated lanterns. Outside of his plots, he writes a book called "Against Bunnyage". He apparently didn't forget his bad time in the monatstery even almost a century later. In 324, after almost a century of plotting, Mete topples the government of the dwarf Eral Fillseals and assumes control of the capital Respectedkeys and the whole Incinerated Lanterns civilization thanks to his many dwarven associates. This is the beggining of the tyranic reign of a human necromancer over a dwarven civilisation that will last 200 years during which the necromancer will keep his power by laiding hunred of oppressive edicts against the outrage caused by his immortality. Though he didn't kill a lot of opponents, the "tall king' fought and survived 687 battles.

    https://preview.redd.it/qguv46yx08g41.png?width=1025&format=png&auto=webp&s=4f9991fe267f922a205f9d0f3f4f6cb383e2596c

No reign is eternal however and in 520, he tastes his own medicine by the hands of a crafty goblin called Ber Deviltunneled that toppled his power during a coup. Luckily for him, he manages to escape Respectedkeys unscathed. He settles in the dwarven fortress of Boltbud where he joins the guild of the "full halls" and becomes its treasurer in only two years thanks to his experience, at this point, his skills in politic are almost unparalleled.

    https://preview.redd.it/ncw5vf4j08g41.png?width=805&format=png&auto=webp&s=211e43380a1b566c3511f40b1df174e00b3d13b6

In 550, the people of Boltbud realize he does not age and he's forced to flee to the human town of Gillcharcoal where he could only hide in the catacombs. At this point he had fallen very low. He managed to infiltrate agents in the great dwarven fortresses he once ruled and tried to assassinate Ber Deviltunneled 5 times but it never worked. All he could do was secure his place in Gillcharcoal's underworld through plots an intimidation. At this point, he probably became completly crazy since he started rampaging through towns like a wild animal. Now His story is but legends and kids are scared of the mad wraith of the tall king of the dwarves that appears and kills all.

    https://preview.redd.it/0r3gcook08g41.png?width=305&format=png&auto=webp&s=2008fb68727fa4f4ef77c5f0874cbd6cb3c169ab

That's about it, as you may have noticed by now, even though he joined two towers, this necromancer never, NEVER raised a single corpse.

    Necoexperiment Visitors

Got some sort of hairy 4-horned necomancer experiment who just wanted to hang out in my tavern and drink for some reason. However, it looks like due to most (if not all) necromancer experiments being building destroyers, my stone doors became prime targets and he started knocking all my stuff over. My 7 starting dwarves had no hope of killing him, and nothing could get his attention.

...So, noticing my floor was directly above a 11 level free fall into the caverns, I had my miner casually walk up and drop the poor guy into the caves. These guys are tough, apparently. He wasn't even damaged by the fall.

Anyone else have any interesting visitors with the update?
