[Masterwork] The members of the human civ I'm playing with are natural born fighters.

For some strange reason, all and every single member of my current civ come with "accomplished" in every weapon and combat related stat of the game. This includes weapons that they can't make, like whips or blowguns. Even babies are born as great warriors. I have no idea of why this happened.

    Adventure Mode Quest Problem

    Posted: 23 Dec 2019 10:00 AM PST

New player here! Having fun so far. One problem i do have is with the quests though. I talk to one of my companions and ask for quests so i get a bandit quest. So i go to where the quest takes place, and i kill all of the people there. The quest doesn't go away and i don't get a reward. Am i not supposed to just go there and kill the bandits? Do i talk to them then fight? I'm kind of confused about this all. Did i maybe not notice one person? Can i spare the bandits ro do i have to murder them all?

    Thanks in advance!

How well do you think Dwarf Fortress will do on Steam?

    Posted: 23 Dec 2019 12:38 AM PST

I know it will have a built in graphical tileset and they've said they are going to improve the UI, but really, considering that it made it into the top 10 of most wishlisted games on Steam it could also easily end up one of the top 10 most refunded games on Steam.

DF is not an easy game to get into. I've tried to get into it a number of times over the years and bounced off each time. Despite that I still like to browse the Bay12 forums every now and then. Reading about the game is pretty interesting, but I find it horrendous to actually play.

Selling a game on Steam is an entirely different situation to releasing it for free with optional donations. There's certain expectations that players will have once they start forking over cash upfront and if they aren't met you are going to have mass refunds and negative reviews. Dwarf Fortress in its current state is a mess. There are several areas that make the game nearly unplayable for me, and I hardly think the general Steam using public will be very much more forgiving than I am.

The UI is definitely a large part of it. The game is very bad about conveying information to the player and allowing the player to interact with its systems. This is a core problem with the game. You are either drowning in a sea of gibberish or need to take another trip to the wiki to find out which of the 15 bazillion submenus you need to use to solve your current problem. To be honest, given the sorry state it's remained in for years upon years I have my doubts as to the extent it will be improved for the Steam release. It needs a complete redesign, but I guess we'll see what it gets.

The balance is another major strike against the game. Build a drawbridge, congrats you never have to worry about an external threat to your dwarves ever again. Grow a tiny 5x5 plot of plump helmets and you have enough food for your entire fortress. Or make a couple useless masterwork stone crafts and buy out the entire caravan. There is no pretense of balance in the game, because, I guess, why balance something when a future update 5 years later might cause a need for a rebalance. I don't see this being acceptable to the average new player who wanders in on Steam.

The bugs and performance problems are the last major issue I see. The game is so buggy that players regularly recommend exploiting bugs to work around other bugs. FPS death is more sure to kill a fort than sieges. I don't know how much bugfixing is intended before the Steam release, but being buggy generally isn't good for a games sales.

You really only get one shot with Steam, if they release and end up with a ton of negative reviews and refunds that could be it. The game might get placed in a poor spot with the algorithm and never see the light day again, except by people who go specifically looking for it. If the game releases before 2021, I personally wouldn't bet on it being a financial success. But what does everybody else think?

So, I started adventurer in a mountain hall (or maybe it was a fortress) north of one of my retired (not abandoned) forts, but it seems that there's a huge conflict going on here! This is only part of what I saw.
