Anyone else enjoy building surface cities? Posted: 22 Oct 2019 08:46 AM PDT I build one just for the kick of it two years ago and now I just can't go back. I'm a disgusting failure of a Dwarf, but I feel like my cities are more creative and well-developed than my underground forts. Also how fleshed out are Masterwork's humans? I haven't tried them yet and I'm curious. [link] [comments]

Posted: 22 Oct 2019 01:04 AM PDT I'm more of a lurker and a viewer than a dedicated player, but I've noticed in some posts that people seem to embark in Evil Biomes mostly for the challenge/fun. After doing a little bit of research, clicking through the DF wiki and stuff like that, I've noticed that an Evil Biome actually has a lot of potential beyond just doing it for the meme. When I looked at the flora, I noticed that it has probably the best trees in the game, the dense glumprong wood makes for good traps and ballista bolts. Silver Barbs can be brewed into cheap alcohol or milled into an expensive dye. The tendrils and eyeball plants are freaky but harmless and even grazable. Some of the ferocious animals found here like Beak Dogs can be tamed, and even vermin like Knuckle Worms and Demon Rats have value or utility. Really the main downside to Evil Biomes is just the crazy weather. Not only can dwarves be caught in a zombie mist or sanity-draining rain, but your water reserves don't seem to refill. I mean, where's the realism in that? :P [link] [comments]

Posted: 22 Oct 2019 03:54 PM PDT This is the tale of Nifih Luthiiki, a female human part of the Romantic Council. It all started one day, when Nifih decided that her fate wasn't to stay a lowly peasant. Equipped with a battle axe and a shield she left for adventure, starting with mere ravens. All the humans around her talked about beasts from far, they couldn't tell her where they were. All they could do was refer her to a well traveled human, Tunem Riderworshipped. Nifih excitedly invited the warrior to adventure with her. The warrior agreed, if Nifih would lead her to glory and death. When they were prepared to leave, Tunem started talking about a dragon in the far north, Luto Goldsizzled. Tunem being Tunem, she knew exactly where this dragon was. Plans were made, axes were sharpened, and birds were killed. It was going to be a long journey, Luto's cave, Curldepth, was far away from their small village. Their adventures were happy times, proudly boasting their kills. Tunem was so happy with her first kill, she announced it to the world. Together they could handle the world, or so they thought. Nifih was hunting for food, fish in a river to be exact. Carrying her battle axe to smash their heads and instantly kill them, it was easy food. For some reason Tunem decided to follow this time, she jumped in the river. Only then she realised she couldn't swim and started panicking. Nifih swam to the shore, trying to fish Tunem out. But Tunem, in her panic, drifted further away from Nifih. That day Tunem drowned, holding on to the corpse of a fish. It wasn't the glory Tunem wanted. Nifih swore she would kill the dragon, for Tunem. She butchered the corpse and took a piece of Tunem with her for the rest of her journey. No one else knew Tunem died that day, everyone at home thought she still was with Nifih. When people talked to Nifih, they talked about how Tunem was her traveling companion. In a way she still was, just not complete. Nifih started going further and further, taking a lot of risks. She attacked every animal she saw, sneaking in between them to instantly kill them with an axe to the head. Fighting didn't excite her anymore, it just wasn't the same. Every time she took it a step further. Morals didn't stop her, when she arrived at another human village, she killed two humans in their homes. When she killed the first one, the second one awoken. The panic in his eyes didn't stop Nifih from mercilessly slamming an axe between his eyes. Their deaths meant nothing to her, she left and no one ever knew it was her. She thought she was an evil murderer, the fact that she didn't respond to their death brought her fear. Was she still human? It kept her awake at night. Those were the first and the last sentient creatures she ever killed. It was all to kill Luto, Tunem would've wanted her to finish what they started. Nifih moved on and fought bigger and stronger targets. She came past a river full of alligators. They noticed her sneaking around, and with a speed faster than an overloaded human, they attacked. Her axe didn't instantly kill them, slash after slash, the alligators didn't die. One of them bit her left leg, her first real injury. It scared her even more. But she stood strong, thinking "Our time in The Future Realm is so brief... I must not succumb to fear!" Tunem would've been proud of her. It was a hard fight, but she managed to scare the biting alligator, freeing her leg. Even though it hurt, she had to fight on. As the fight went on, one of the remaining alligators bit her right leg. This wasn't like the first bite, this one managed to hold on no matter what she did. It tore apart her leg, making her lose the ability to stand. It didn't stop her from fighting, even while crawling. Her determination scared the alligators, they ran away. She wouldn't leave it at that, she hunted down the running targets, butchering their corpses and carrying their heads. She killed two of the three alligators. Her leg didn't heal, and she had to crawl her way to Luto. But none of that mattered, she had to get to Luto. After resting for a few days she went on, fighting all the animals around her without standing. Then she saw giant alligators, they looked terrifying. Their mouths, they could swallow her whole. But she had to fight them, to conquer the fear. If she was going to face a dragon, how could a little reptile scare her? This time she had a plan, she threw items she had collected during her journey at the monsters. Helmets, socks, meat, horns, you name it and she threw it. It knocked them unconscious, making it easy for Nifih to kill them. She was proud on her creativity, collecting the items and the heads of her enemies. There were few more animals that could hurt her, and she killed them all. One day she decided that she should stop crawling around, and found some wood to make a crutch. While looking for the right tree for her crutch, she saw a group of unicorns. The animals out of legends, the story of every bard, they stood there with their majestic aura. It brought a smile to her lips, something that didn't happen since Tunem's death. For a while she stood there watching, then felled the last tree she saw before she saw the unicorns. It must have been fate, that tree was the right tree. That night she crafted her crutch, a plum wood crutch. It allowed her to stand up for the first time in a while. At first walking was quite odd, she had to give up her shield for the crutch. But soon she got used to it, ruling the nature around her once again. Luto's cave was getting closer and closer. The area around was abandoned by all, no one wanted to be near a dragon. As she walked further, something flashed by, it was so fast she couldn't see a thing. All that was left were tracks, grass that got destroyed by whatever passed by. She knew this was it. She dropped every single item she had with her, only keeping her battle axe, her crutch, and the piece of Tunem. This was the day. She started crawling, this time not because she couldn't stand, but to hide in the grass. She felt powerful in the grass, and she easily got close to whatever passed by. It confirmed her suspicions, the creature that passed her was indeed Luto Goldsizzled. It was a skinny red dragon, she sat there in the grass staring at the dragon. It was indeed a creature worth fearing. She slowly crawled near, reaching right behind it. Nothing could go wrong anymore, the dragon didn't notice her and she was in position. She held her trustworthy battle axe above her head, preparing for the best hit ever. Everything was right, it wouldn't be a difficult hit. And she swung down, hitting him on the back of the head. Luto turned around and stared at her, still having the axe in it's head. It took three seconds before Luto sighed at her, and Nifih was instantly melted. And that's why you leave dragon killing to the mighty dwarves. [link] [comments]
Thirty. Three. Days. Of. Dwarf: Day 22 (2019-10-22, 20:00EDT, Extra Life 2019!) Posted: 22 Oct 2019 11:25 AM PDT We're sitting at about half of our charity goal now, and it still looks like we might reach it! So - what ARE we going to do for our next fortress, now that we've made a glacier work? After we put the obsidian caster up, we're looking at a fairly mature fort, and it'll be time for me to move to another one! We know we're going to do a new fort with Vettlingr's tileset to try it out on stream live. I've been wanting to do a desert fort since the last red-sand-and-green-glass traps fort, but I'm open to other suggestions! We've got about 11 days left in our charity event, and there are still dwarves unclaimed by viewers!
Next Day (Day 22) => Want to get reminders? Sign up to the event for a reminder, or follow me on Twitter @Nirruden!
What in the name of the glowing pits is this about?
It is time to return to our roots, and so we shall. Thirty. Three. Days. Of. Dwarf. Starting on 10/1 and proceeding through the Extra Life 2019 Game Day event on 11/2, I'm going to stream and teach what I know. Every. Single. Day.
I like to do things when there's more than one reason to do them:
Basically, I'll stream in the evenings most days for an hour or two. On Saturdays and Sundays, we'll generally run a little longer, but I'm going to stream every day if it means I have to get up at 3am to do it. (For the record, we've averaged 3.42 hours per day over the first week!) On 11/2, we're going to culminate with a 24-hour long livestream, as part of the Extra Life charity event. I don't use Facebook, etc. and people may want to donate to Extra Life 2019, even if they're not supporting my efforts directly. Feel free to share my donations link, or to direct people to the charity's main page.
Well, aside from helping to support my local children's hospital (good vibes, ho!) I'll be pushing out tutorial game(s) live on stream as part of the event. Your donations are a spur in that direction applied to my backside. You can even attend the event with me, since I'll be broadcasting live on my stream the whole time! ...but if that's not enough for you?
Anonymous or not, if I can make it work, everyone will know you're supporting kids that need it.
If you're not naming him something awful, it'll even happen. You're welcome to request a trade for the dwarf, if I have one suitable to match it! If we run more than one fort, donator dwarves will show up in all forts after the one where you donated!
If none are available, I'll have to use a migrant. (I won't be advising when the window closes. We call this 'Early cat catches the dwarf'. Move fast, some have already been claimed.) As above, if you donate on the first fort of our event, we'll put that same dwarf into the starting seven every fort thereafter!
Want me to embark on a reanimating evil biome with a necromancer next door? It's your call. I'll save the current stream fort, and start a new one on the spot with settings as close to your request as I can manage on the fly, and run with it until it dies or I do. If someone else flips the script on you before I finish, you can either donate again to flip if back or wait for their fort to exhaust before I resume yours. Your choice. (We call this one 'Last dwarf gets the sock.')
Some limits on this are required for sanity's sake. If you're really thinking you'd like to do this, send me a message and we'll work out the details beforehand! At some point, I'll get back to the stream fort, but for a truly generous donation, I'm 100% willing to give up some time and show off anything you'd like, live and on the spot. You can find a link to my Steam profile (which contains a list of potential games I could probably get set up for streaming) here if you're considering this. (And if it's something we can do multiplayer, we can even try that too, which would be a stream first.)
Wait....Thirty days of tutorials for Dwarf Fortress as part of a charity drive?
Thirty-three days, actually. It was the wife's idea - she suggested that you folks might like to get a newer version of my original tutorial, and that this might be a good avenue to combine hardcore Dwarf Fortress fanatics, who are already a generous and supporting community, with a charitable cause to support. I didn't have much luck finding a flaw in her reasoning, so I bit the bullet and advertised it at work, too, despite my trepidation regarding drawing personal attention there.
We'll be putting the newest version of the starter pack and Dwarf Fortress through its paces as we (attempt to) start a new tutorial series for v 0.44.12. (Note: If there's an update and it seems relatively bug free, I'll try for the newer version, but I'm aiming this at newer players, so trying to ride the cutting edge isn't really in the cards.) Past demonstrations (From v.34 to present) have included glaciers, deserts, sites with necromancer towers adjacent, as well as discussion on how to influence worldgen to get what you want. Our first one will be a more sedate embark, designed and chosen for relatively newer players, and we'll start with worldgen as though we're looking at a fresh install. Goal: My goal for "Tutorial Night" is to walk new players through an embark using the DF Starter Pack. (Explicit thanks to /u/PeridexisErrant who I admire for his dedication, which is studded with perseverance and ringed with bands of my gratitude! Without his efforts, a tutorial for installing and configuring everything for the game and its add-ons would be a sizable task unto itself. I've devoted multiple-hours of stream to demonstrating it 'the hard way'!) Along the way, I'll provide examples of the setup and tools I use to play Dwarf Fortress, as a guidepost for new players. What I'm really trying to do is give new players a reference point they can come back to on how to set up a world, embark on a site, and stand a reasonable chance of employing a fairly basic and standard design to build a workable fortress wherever they may need to start one. Stream Info: The channel rules are simple: Respect Wheaton's Law and you'll be fine. Just don't expect the content of the broadcast to be 100% suitable for children; Sorry, kids. I'm much too low-brow for a guaranteed clean broadcast. Get your parents' permission, etc etc. If you have questions you might like answered with a demonstration, and not simply a quick post in the weekly questions thread, I'm your guy. I'll do my best to demonstrate just about anything you can think up - aquifers, megaprojects and magma pistons aside. (Minecarts may get covered, but don't expect anything computational or timer based - I'm a casual player, not a dwarven mechanical engineer.) You can view the stream here, as well as on the donations page for Extra Life. Later Goals: At some point in this fortress, I'll walk players through my 'most commonly used' tools in DFHack and in the utilities that come packaged in the DF Starter Pack and how I use them to construct a simple, basic, and tightly run fortress that can support as many dwarves as my PC can haul, defend itself against all comers, and handle just about anything. I also will demonstrate Quickfort at some point for those who've never taken advantage of it! We'll certainly touch on Dwarf Therapist, and discuss how I use it to control the behavior and organization of my New players, your questions (no matter how 'silly' you may think they are) are 100% welcome, as they're the whole point to the broadcast! Join us and ask them! If you can't make it (or are not willing to brave my often vulgar displays of unsuitability) and still have questions you can't seem to figure out, post them in the DF Bi-Weekly Questions Thread for this week and I'll do my best to help you overcome your obstacles, if the expert players haven't gotten there first! (Obligatory: Yesss... Join usss... Join the Dark Side... We have cookies!)
On that note, experienced players who want to follow along are certainly welcome (and often manage to teach me a thing or two, directly or not) but the main thrust of the stream will be to help new players get over the introductory hump to start playing at a deeper level, so you may find yourself paying less attention to the pace of the stream and more attention to your fellow audience members. I do love having a few veterans show up, though, because my fortress designs always get better when I'm shown a method I've never used!
Please don't go. The children need you. Please donate if you are able. On behalf of Riley and Extra Life: Thank you, in advance, for your generosity!

Posted: 21 Oct 2019 10:51 PM PDT So I just popped into my old fortress and set the whole thing on fire because I wanted to play in the same world but not on the same fort. More specifically, I let the demons out of the underground I locked them in and let them kill everyone. So here's the question. Now that they are out of the bag, what does this mean? Can demons escape into the overworld? Just curious as to some of the working of the game, a lot of stuff isn't well documented and it's very interesting to me. [link] [comments] |
