Ask about anything related to Dwarf Fortress - including the game, utilities, bugs, problems you're having, mods, etc. You will get fast and friendly responses in this thread.

Read the sidebar before posting! It has information on a range of game packages for new players, and links to all the best tutorials and quick-start guides. If you have read it and that hasn't helped, mention that!

You should also take five minutes to search the wiki - if tutorials or the quickstart guide can't help, it usually has the information you're after. You can find the previous questions thread here.

If you can answer questions, please sort by new and lend a hand - linking to a helpful resource (eg wiki page) is fine.

Had some Fun the other day.

Running a smaller fort. I've fiddled around in the init files and limited my population to 50 (no new migrants starting at 50, still births and petitions for citizenship). It tends to help the longevity of the fort, as there's fewer dwarves to divide resources or attention to - and we tend to attract less attention.

Unfortunately, we had attracted a good deal of attention for our artifacts. Four times already, humans had come on quests asking for us to hand over our artifacts. Of course they were denied. What's it to me that a Human in some above ground town thinks they have a right to my perfect amethyst, As Astad?

Eventually, other forces tried less direct approaches. One was successfully stolen despite my best efforts, and the culprit admitted he had been coerced by a Goblin Mercenary. Shame. Take your few days in the jail and sleep it off.

Then, another person is caught red handed, and when interrogated, reveals that the same Mercenary was behind it. And lo and behold, a few days later, that same goblin appears as a visitor, purportedly to visit my tavern. Immediately I tried to schedule an interrogation with him, but he was wily. Three times he rebuffed my Sherrif. The final straw was when I checked his inventory. There he stood in my crowded tavern, buck naked except for my artifact wooden crown from the first year.

In a rage, I sent my military to put him down, thinking myself justified. With a deft stroke, a Hammerdwarf brained him. But sadly, the tavern guests were not so understanding. And it seems some of the guests were allied with some of my long term residents, so when a wayward punch was thrown and a couple bards were struck down, and then a couple mercenaries, and a few Lord consorts.

Watching all of this play out, I again grew frustrated, and perhaps overhasty. Slowly, the guests and long term residents were turning on me. So I decided that enough was enough, and I would take matters into my own hands. I opened my squad screen, and declared every visitor an enemy of the fort. The slow piecemeal work the foreigners were inflicting would now be condensed into a few moments.

I didn't expect how many of my true citizens would turn on each other. At the end of it all, my 10 military dwarfs were reduced to 2, and my total population (including long term residents) was down to 24 from 82 at the peak.

All over a Goblin thief bastard.
