Ask about anything related to Dwarf Fortress - including the game, utilities, bugs, problems you're having, mods, etc. You will get fast and friendly responses in this thread.

Read the sidebar before posting! It has information on a range of game packages for new players, and links to all the best tutorials and quick-start guides. If you have read it and that hasn't helped, mention that!

You should also take five minutes to search the wiki - if tutorials or the quickstart guide can't help, it usually has the information you're after. You can find the previous questions thread here.

If you can answer questions, please sort by new and lend a hand - linking to a helpful resource (eg wiki page) is fine.

My very first Adventure- I found a couple humans in a house, casually chatting with me while one was being consumed by a giant alligator.

My attempt at Remastering the Fortress Mode music track.

    Posted: 03 Oct 2021 02:55 PM PDT

After being disappointed with the remasters and remakes of the Fortress Mode tracks I was able to find on youtube, I decided to give remastering the original a shot myself. I am fairly satisfied with the result, and thought I'd share.

If you'd like a copy of this remaster, you can use Audacity to record your computer's audio while playing this file.

    Dwarf fortress compared to rimworld

    Posted: 04 Oct 2021 10:01 AM PDT

Originally I was going to make an absolute truck of a post, but then I realized it would be next to unreadable with the sheer weight of the wall of text I was creating. So instead I decided I would do short pieces comparing a few different but related parts of these two fantastic games. I chose them because they're always mentioned together. This part is going to discuss combat differences between the games. it also will be posted to both reddits so I can read the comments both have to say, if you have any note or something you feel I misrepresented feel free to correct me.

    Combat

    Dwarf fortress

In dwarf fortress, traps are king, "micro" and "macro" By which I mean, from a single spike that shoots up from the floor, to the entire entryway closing up and filling with water or lava, or both to entomb your enemies in obsidian, traps are your go to way to get rid of enemies. Very little doesnt need to breath, even less doesnt need to breath and also is lavaproof, so with a good trap, you can kill most anything, engineer it right and get rid of the bodies simultaneously either by simply burning it, or have flowing water carry it into the caverns. That isnt to say dwarf on enemy combat isnt effective, dwarves are wonderfully deadly when well trained, with 1v2s being easy to win with the power of the dwarven martial trance (they become immune to certain negative combat modifiers and get a boost to all stats and combat prowesses when attacked by more than 1 enemy at the same time) The problem is, many times when fighting with sheer dwarven might, you might eventually be nickle and dimed till your military just isnt strong enough to take on threats. In addition there are many threats that can take out a whole slew of dwarves simultaneously post mortem with poisonous gases and other threats. I have seen people who primarily rely on military might, but normally they are still softened up with traps beforehand. and if worse comes to worse, walling yourself in is a perfectly valid and indispensable ability, 200 undead decided they like how the land above my fort looks? I think they can keep it for now, I'll just stay down here thanks. my 50 dwarf strong army is strong, but they're not coming out of that one without some serious losses, not just deaths, but maimings that make them unfit for the military. losing a hand isnt quite as bad as dying, but you're not staying in the military unless you're already legendary, because a shield is not a suggestion. Dwarves, unlike pawns in rimworld don't go down when injured or in pain, they can eventually pass out from blood loss but that is not the same thing. They fight until they pass out even if they're missing a leg and an arm and is vomiting constantly, thats not to say they're effective at that point, but they have to fight, because once they pass out they're dead. The enemy will rip off their helmet and bash their brains in with it. so casualtys are typically much higher in dwarf fortress.

    Rimworld

In rimworld, combat is primarily performed by your pawns. In the past, you could keep a killbox and rely on facing a few enemies at a time to slaughter them, but breachers have made it to where enemies can now reliably bust through any wall, or even a mountain to get to your fortress and try their best to kill you. traps are effective if you can lead enemies into them, but they dont deal incredible damage, and even the wood ones are expensive once you have 20 that you need to replace after every raid. With only around 13-18 pawns each pawn needs to be extremely deadly. Weapons for every combatant is a necessity, with noncombatants regularly drafted for the sole purpose of a distraction, or to bandage someone up the moment they go down. Guns typically have better damage than melee weapons, but once the enemy gets into melee range they have to rely on their fists, and I dont think I can out punch someone with a longsword. Generally you want to force your enemy out into the open and slow them down while firing on them from cover. walls placed strategically with gaps between them can make for easy cover placement in case enemys break through there, and turrets can be placed liberally if you have the steel or uranium to spare for their ammunition. more animal invasions are common, but if you make them attack in a single file line, you can easily attack them with three pawns at once with melee, while shooting into the crowd with your gunners behind them, but dont fight them in the open, if they surround you with their superior numbers your gunners are dead the moment they get swarmed. When a pawn is downed they are typically ignored unless the bandits decide to take what they can and leave, in which case a pawn may be kidnapped and sold into slavery if you cant rescue them in time. You can rescue them if you get a quest for it if they make it off map, but thats no guarentee. Despite this, most pawns do not die in combats, they may bleed out if not given proper care fast enough, or die from infections if you lack proper medicine, but its rare that a pawn dies in the midst of combat, unless a tribal gets a lucky hit to the brain with a greatbow from way too far away. Injuries are easily solvable with simple or more complex prosthetics, a pawn that has had all of their non required limbs removed can be turned into an even more effective killing machine by installing bionic arms and legs making them move and fight faster than the rest of your population, or if your far enough in, everyone has bionic arms and legs, with bionic eyes too that make them fire more accurately, and a brain chip that makes them need less sleep, and power armor that shoots fireballs. An individual pawn needs to be capable of taking on armys, but you can make them incredibly strong.
