Had my first real experience of !FUN! just now...

    Posted: 22 Sep 2021 08:22 PM PDT

This is the second real fort I have made, the 1st one I had decided to give up on because of a run in with 1 cave spider that left me with 50 corpses on the ground due to not knowing what the fk I was doing and thinking that it was a good idea to revenge kill a goddamn Giant Cave Spider with 30 civilians... that's a story for some other time.

This fortress was better, I didn't get to the population my last fortress got to (120ish) but it was much more successful because I had managed to get a steel production chain up and running and a legendary weaponsmith I got enabled me to sell super valuable masterwork maces to the caravans and clear them all out.

I was also next to goblins and a tower. The goblins I never had trouble with, but the tower served to be my downfall. Around the 2rd year I got the dreaded notification: "The dead walk. Hide while you still can!" And I did, for 1 whole year as my dwarves painstakingly tried to build an elaborate hallway of atom-smashers that would have served the purpose of annihilating and invasion in one lever pull. By the time a year had passed it was hardly functional at all, and the horde had gotten bored and left. There was also a migrant wave huddled, cold and starving on the surface that was waiting to come inside, so I just decided to send out my military and clean out the resurrected livestock with pure force instead of an elaborate atom-smasher hallway, and did so easily.

Come next year, and I had mostly forgotten about that hallway and it was in the same condition it was before, half finished. Then the next undead horde arrives. I decide, "fuck it", and think my half-finished atom-smasher will do the trick, but due to a poor understanding of how damn fast those intelligent undead can sprint, 2 of them get past the death zone in no time flat. There were 2 squads of mostly steel-armored dwarves stationed to clean up stragglers like this, but they are IMMEDIATELY slaughtered by these OP goddamn zombies and they descend into the fortress to cause even more mayhem. I lock one of the dwarves in the meeting hall, and while every other dwarf is getting massacred by the undead horde I get the smart idea to set the lever-pull command to "repeat."

Every man, woman, and child in the fortress dies horribly, while the slow, shambling unintelligent zombies, along with a few smart ones and the necromancer leading the invasion, got squished into nothing as 1 terrified dwarf flips the lever over and over while listening to the screams of the friends and family that he lived with for 4 years get stabbed, crushed, and sliced open by the 2 intelligent undead that got inside.

When the dust settles, one intelligent undead managed to escape the still crashing gates of death and runs for the hills, obviously a little bit worried about the strange lack of his comrades to be seen anywhere at all. And after the poor bastard stops flipping his levers, him, and 3 children are all that is left. I give them all the nickname "Hallowed Survivor" and abandoned the fortress. I mean, I COULD have kept going, I had stockpiles to last me centuries and one... guy... left over, but who the fuck was going to clean up all this mess? It certainly wasn't going to be me.

Nothing better than having an intelectual conversation after curbstoping a goblin (in the middle of a siege of course)

    (mod request) simple animal names

    Posted: 22 Sep 2021 08:47 PM PDT

Is there a mod to replace animal names with more commonly known ones as well as removing specific names for males females and babies (with a possible exception of cow and bull)?
