    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 05:09 PM PDT

Ask about anything related to Dwarf Fortress - including the game, utilities, bugs, problems you're having, mods, etc. You will get fast and friendly responses in this thread.

Read the sidebar before posting! It has information on a range of game packages for new players, and links to all the best tutorials and quick-start guides. If you have read it and that hasn't helped, mention that!

You should also take five minutes to search the wiki - if tutorials or the quickstart guide can't help, it usually has the information you're after. You can find the previous questions thread here.

If you can answer questions, please sort by new and lend a hand - linking to a helpful resource (eg wiki page) is fine.

Pandaman Jake "The Shadow's Edge" Scott, Tournament Gladiator

    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 09:02 PM PDT

The Shadow's Edge gripped his wooden katana's hilt tightly and slowly exhaled as he furrowed his brow. His opponent was poised to strike with an overhead stance from a close distance, unknowingly awaiting his death. With the wind behind him, he unsheathed his blade and sprung. The claymore swung down at him with intensity and determination but wielding the sword was a man who was a hundred years too early to be an even match. He deflected the blade to the side, and with the added momentum, swung about in a wide arc and connected to the back of the opponent's head.

    "OW!! JAKE! THAT HURT!"

Kevin dropped his wooden stick and clutched his head as he fell to the floor. He cradled himself as he winced in pain, shouting out curses.

"YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO HIT THAT HARD JAKE!"

Kevin's entourage shuffled to their feet and knelt beside the incapacitated Horseman and shot glares at Jake, who sheathed his blade triumphantly.

"His stance was all wrong. I keep telling you guys that you all have too many openings. If you practiced the sword like me every morning, you'd smooth them away." Jake said with his arms crossed.

Carly lifted her hand away from Kevin's head and saw had been painted with blood. She stood up and scowled at Jake, gripping her wand tightly in hand.

"You're kicked out from our Wizards and Warlocks group Jake! You take things too far!" She screamed with tears rolling down her face.

"We even gave you three chances!" Jeremy said as he reached into his bandage bag. "You cause nothing but pain!"

Jake felt his heart sink, his breath held as the consequences for his pyrrhic victory began to unfold. He swallowed what felt like an oversized hot pocket bite as he stammered to save himself.

"It's not my fault! If only Kevin wasn't so bad at roleplaying his knight! He would have easily blocked my counter-attack!" Jake pointed to Kevin who remained cradled on the ground.

"NO! We've had enough of you Jake! Get out of our sight! You are now henceforth BANISHED from our WnW and LARP group." Shouted Kevin. The others nodded in unison, their silence stabbed Jake further than any dagger could.

"F-F-FINE! Forget you all! I'll find others who aren't so CASUAL!"

Jake balled his fists and turned away to walk back to his house. His wooden sword he hand-carved bounced about his side as he walked. Tears swelled under his eyes, betrayed by the ones he called friends.

When Jake arrived home, he sluggishly dragged himself to his bed and nestled beneath the warm WnW jute blanket. Within his safe space, he began to bawl.

"STUPID KEVIN! STUPID JEREMY! STUPID CARLY!" He shouted as he rocked back and forth to calm himself. Unbeknown to him, his mother had walked in.

"Jake, Jakey honey. Are you okay?" She whispered as she approached his bed.

"N-N-NO! GO AWAY, MOM!" He shouted, turning as far as he could away from her. "I DON'T NEED YOU! OR KEVIN! OR ANYONE!!" He screamed which soon turned to sob.

"Jakey, I found this flyer. It seems like it's an open invitation to one of your LE-YARP groups?" She unfolded the paper from the confines of her pocket. Jake turned quickly and snatched the paper from her aged hands.

"What?! Gimme that!" He turned the flyer right side up and began to read aloud.

"We welcome you, slaves to our Lord of Blood. Today, we once again open the gates to the greatest feast we could arrange in His honor. For many aspiring to become the Champion of the Arena, and only one can succeed, leaving the blood of others to soak the sand. Nothing satisfies Him more than battle, and over the next weeks, He shall witness it, as will you. Let us all praise Armok, and let us all bathe in the bleeding sun of the eve, foretelling us what grand event is to occur!"

"Mom! This is it! A group that will finally take Wizards and Warlocks as seriously as I do!" Jake frantically hopped out of bed and began to pack his bag. "I need to leave at once! Or else I'll be late for entry into the tournament!"

"A-Are you sure Jakey? The flyer seemed rather... distasteful. And it's far away too" She picked up the flyer from the bed and offered it to Jake who seized it quickly."

"I keep telling you Mom, Wizards and Warlocks isn't a KIDS game. It's a game that challenges the mind and the body, and this group CLEARLY gets it!" He stuffed the paper into his bag that was packed with meager essentials. "Also, I'm sure there's some sort of prize when I win." Jake slung the bag around his shoulder and walked towards the kitchen to grab what remained of his snacks.

"W-Well if you are certain honey. But, please at least wait till your dad gets home. He'd want to at least say goodbye before you left." She followed him to the kitchen and watched him stuff what was left of his hot pockets and bamboo shoots.

"Nah, he'll get all emotional and beg me to stay. You know dad, the worrywart. I'll leave him a note, he'd at least like that." Jake turned to the front door and grabbed a pencil and paper. He quickly wrote a half-hearted goodbye and gave it to his mother.

"Well, I'm off Mom. Next time you'll see me, I'll have a trophy, or a medal, or whatever it is they give to champions." His smile stretched from ear to ear as he swung open the door and began to briskly walk towards the arena, excited to begin his newfound adventure. And to finally, test his mastery of the Samurai Art Skill.

    "Alternative" Tower Project Instructions

    Posted: 01 Jul 2021 08:19 PM PDT

Does anyone understand the diagram at the bottom of the wiki page for building tower mega-projects?

    https://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Tower_(project))

I've been trying for hours to replicate and am still stumped.

What are the "O" symbols and why aren't they labeled?

If you build your stair two tiles from the wall on the first z level, how do your carpenters get to the z+1 level if you don't build the red wall segment that the diagram says to build last?

Thanks in advance for the help!
