Posted: 27 Jun 2021 04:47 PM PDT Weight in DF is weird. I went over https://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Weight and noticed that the weight of everything is multiplied by 10 from its intuitive value (density * volume). Almost everything is effectively ten times as dense as you'd expect, with a few exceptions like weapons (7kg = 800ml of axe * 7.85 kg/litre, not 800ml of axe * 78.5 kg/litre). Things get even weirder when you go over the size of objects (as seen here) and notice that they seem to be way too small in general — a statue for example is 6000 units, or just 6 litres. For the unaware, that's 3 two-litre soda bottles. But if you multiply the oddly small values by a factor of 10, everything makes sense again — a statue is 60 litres, or the size of a dwarf. A chest is 20 litres instead of being the size of a two-litre soda bottle. A stone boulder is 100 litres, which means a wheelbarrow can fit one of those things instead of ten and a minecart five of those things instead of fifty. An anvil is now 10 litres instead of being half the size of a two-litre soda bottle. A drink is now a two-litre soda bottle's worth of liquid instead of being less than a cup. Stuff like that. In other words, as far as I can tell, DF includes two weird factor of 10 discrepancies that cancel out. Everything is ten times as small as it should be (except weapons and perhaps a few other exceptions), but everything is ten times as dense as it should be (again except weapons), so it all cancels out. Well, aside from making objects far tinier than they should be. TL;DR: Everything in DF is too small. Speculation: Toady added this as a hack to make containers like wheelbarrows and minecarts more effective. They can hold ten times as much stuff as they should, which is why a wheelbarrow can hold 33 wheelbarrows within itself instead of 3. Stone transport might have been too laborious, otherwise speaking — if a minecart can only hold 5 stones at a time instead of 50, there might not be any point to using them, given the hassle. Speculation: This is why falling objects are so incredibly dangerous: an ordinary piece of pig tail cloth is denser than real world lead when you multiply its density by 10 (1.52 g/cm^3 of plant fiber * DF factor of 10 > 11.34 g/cm^3 of real world lead). Even a seed (density 0.6 g/cm^3) is more than twice as dense as most stones (2.67 g/cm^3) when you multiply its density by 10. When you drop seeds and cloth on your dwarves, you're actually dropping stone and lead bullets on their heads. Edit: Wait, I should have called this "I figured out why falling objects are so dangerous" because that's the real story here. Ah well, at least I've posted a suggestion to fix things at the DF Suggestions forum: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=178681.0 (Make everything bigger but less dense). 2nd Edit: And now as a bug report: https://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=11772 (0011772: (Almost) Everything is 10 times as dense as it should be). 3rd Edit: To address the concerns about producing ten times as much stuff per item since they're ten times as large, just edit the reaction RAWs to require ten times as much input material per produced item, every produced item is ten times as big after all. It'd be a lot of manual editing, but this is something that Toady can farm out to the community, I'm sure there'd be plenty of volunteers to help out with development. Doubly so once people realize that this will speed up hauling and transport, because stuff like leather and cloth can now be safely transported from the trade depot to your fortress via gravity chute in moments. And to those worried about this change instead generating more hauling jobs, the number of items won't change (just their size), so the same number of hauling jobs would be generated by the same number of items. Wheelbarrow and minecart carrying capacities can just be increased by a factor of 10 so they carry the same number of items as before, leading to no difference in anything except the behavior of falling objects. It's all upside (gravity chute transport) or neutrality (containers carry the same number of things since they're also 10 times bigger), the only loss would be having to use gold and platinum for your falling objects trap instead of random seeds and cloth. And isn't that far more dwarven, braining goblins with proper dwarven gold instead of random clothes? I'd say it's all upside. [link] [comments]
My first attempt at playing The Long Night Posted: 28 Jun 2021 12:01 PM PDT Ah, this seems interesting. Let's settle somewhere without an aquifer for convenience since I suck at the game anyway. Like twenty minutes later: I have no food. I have no water. Aaaaand everyone just died and my fort has withered. Of course it has. Fantastic. [link] [comments]
(Sequel Post)Interesting insights on a world with no size, population or site limits Posted: 28 Jun 2021 01:40 PM PDT For the original post go here I wasn't sure where I wanted to start, but ended up with the Oar of Battle who less than 50 survivors after being stomped on by three separate goblin civs. The tragic history of these dwarves being that they lost their capital to one of the many forest titans, after the king soul his soul to necromancy, and reclaimed it while simultaneously fighting two goblin civilizations. Only to dig too deep and lose their last city as a new civilization made up of multiple demons conquered the lands. This is where we started. Oar of Battle isn't on here because Goblins conquered them Frosty Cruelty has three cities with thousands of residents and a bunch of towns as an example of your average civilization I only got a few migrants throughout my fort who weren't random spawns. All of them ancient dwarves who have a long colorful history in different goblin prisons I nicknamed our queen Boudica and it turns out she was in a long distance romance with one of the only other surviving dwarves of this entire society, and they got married! Still hoping I can get an heir produced before they die of old age! Our militia commander and Baron is Ernest who is a legendary military leader. Most civilizations have a legendary leader or two so you need to be led by one just to keep up! Here's a volcano mountain fort, and yes I AM smoothing the entire mountain just because I can! Armok Vision is a bit wonky with this world so I can't get any cool pics through it I'm also naming every dwarf since I plan to make sequel forts and I like returning characters I had a wererhino invade this fort and decided this was our patron goddess giving us a sign as the only thing better than a wererhino is a were elephant! This is Almalexia, and sadly she killed the other wererhino revealing an extreme complication in making a werebeast military, but I haven't given up! It's just delayed... Custom titles and nicknames carry over to other forts This is Eb! One of the only dwarves in our society cursed with vampirism! She has "Volunteered" for a special super secret super soldier project, and will soon be stabbed with many spikes for maximum blood coverage! Until I finish setting up she is our eternal bookkeeper! With armies of thousands and literal demons being common in this part of the world I decided that the best solution long term is special werebeast squads and vampire squads! I'm carving out special sections of the fort to lock them into when they're not on missions. This is almost every battle. Countless thousands of enemies preventing us from wiping out cities even though we win the battles. Death is happening on an unprecedented scale and I refuse to call this fortress a success until I conquer the southern valley we inhabit! Complicated by the fact that every time I destroy a town a bandit civilization moves in and puts it back on the map! I have a bunch of mini-goblin states forming within my borders who offer tribute to me until I decide whether they shall die or not. Interesting to note: My fortress guard(captain of the guard and her squad) work full time and over time hours! Because of world and population size we have a constant influx of schemers trying to overthrow the fort. I have 5 pages of interrogation reports Dealing with that and them being the only true defensive force while others are off fighting. I have to make sure the fort guards are fully numbered and ready to respond to a plethora of threats! Speaking of Schemers: This is our champion! He earned his nickname idea because he migrated as a papermaker, became a mayor in the first year, but lost his office due to a conspiracy by an intelligent undead goblin. Following this he joined our military and became our greatest warrior. Carving his name into history by carving it into the flesh of his foes! Here's my favorite takeaway: My fps does suck, but when it comes to gameplay this *feels* like dwarf fortress at it's best! The world is SO busy and full of stuff happening all the time that I've never had a fort that felt so city like or a world so full of life [link] [comments]
