Captain of the guard smashes in the skull of the dwarf who cut the tree down he was stuck in...

    Posted: 19 Feb 2021 07:59 AM PST

I started a mission to recover some artifact trinket of some kind a local dwarf wanted. I then notice the Captain of the Guard has not left yet, but everyone else has already left.. I find he is in a tree and not moving, so I assume he is either stuck or hiding so he doesn't have to go on the mission.

So either way I need him to come down so the mission can start or at least to get him down. I didn't have anymore proper woodcutters, as they had all left on the mission already. So I assigned a young 15 year old female dwarf who has aspirations of starting a family to a Woodcutting position. This was just temporary position to help the Captain of the Guard down from the tree. Having no skills at cutting trees this took a few moments. Once the Pecan tree had been felled the Captain of the Guard sustained no injures, but a Spinning Pecan log landed on his right foot..

█ "The spinning pecan wood logs strikes the captain of the guard in the right foot, but there is no force!

█ `XXX' Zolutholtar, Weaponsmith: I felled a tree. That was satisfying.

The Weaponsmith having never felled a tree before was proud of this new accomplishment! But the Captain of the Guard was now all kinds of mad having had a pecan log land on his foot. He chases the Weaponsmith around the map a bit attempting to fire his his bismuth bronze crossbow at the now fleeing teenage dwarf who was only trying to help.

█ The captain of the guard misses the weaponsmith!

█ The captain of the guard bashes the weaponsmith in the left lower leg with his (bismuth bronze crossbow), bruising the skin through the (sheep wool dress)!

█ The captain of the guard strikes at the weaponsmith but the shot is narrowly deflected by the (copper battle axe)!

█ The captain of the guard attacks the weaponsmith but She jumps away!

    █ `XXX' Zolutholtar, Weaponsmith: I must withdraw!

█ The captain of the guard strikes at the weaponsmith but the shot is easily deflected by the (copper battle axe)!

█ The captain of the guard attacks the weaponsmith but She jumps away!

    █ `XXX' Zolutholtar, Weaponsmith: I must withdraw!

█ The captain of the guard bashes the weaponsmith in the right lower arm with his (bismuth bronze crossbow), bruising the muscle through the (pig tail cloak)!

█ The force bends the right elbow, bruising the muscle and bruising the muscle!

█ The captain of the guard strikes at the weaponsmith but the shot is narrowly deflected by the (copper battle axe)!

█ The captain of the guard strikes at the weaponsmith but the shot is effortlessly deflected by the (copper battle axe)!

█ The captain of the guard strikes at the weaponsmith but the shot is narrowly deflected by the (copper battle axe)!

    █ `XXX' Zolutholtar, Weaponsmith: I must withdraw!

█ `XXX' Zolutholtar, Weaponsmith: Has the tide turned? Ahhhhhhh! No!

█ `XXX' Zolutholtar, Weaponsmith: Help! Save me!

They fight and chase each other to near the frozen river, where eventually the Weaponsmith having been deflecting repeated blows with with her copper battle axe against the Captain of the Guard's bismuth bronze crossbow. She is hit in the hand causing here to loses hold of the copper battle axe.

The Captain of the Guard continues to get in more then a dozen more blows on the now helpless Weaponsmith, laying on the ice of the frozen river. The Weaponsmith eventually becomes enraged and attempts to make a last stand against her attacker..

He continues to beat in her skull with his bismuth bronze crossbow, until he opens an artery in her head.

    █ The weaponsmith retches.

█ The captain of the guard bashes the weaponsmith in the head with his (bismuth bronze crossbow) and the injured part is crushed!

█ An artery has been opened by the attack!

She now lifeless on the frozen river is left by the Captain of the Guard, as he now leaves to go on his mission to collect the far away artifact trinket.

█ `*' Asdûgonol, captain of the guard: Those injuries... This does not scare me.

Almost immediately as the skirmish has ended the spring thaw happens dropping her body into the river, until next winter when it can be recovered when it freezes again. To be dug out from her icy grave.

Selective Forbidding; Or how to never lose a strange mood dwarf to insanity

    Posted: 18 Feb 2021 01:56 PM PST

Pretty much the title, started up a new fort recently and my first strange mood is a child who wants wood and cloth. Wood, I have in spades at the embark, but cloth? Well, I only embarked with some wool and silk, neither of which the kid wants.

No infrastructure set up, so I get to planting pigtails. But wait! It's still spring in my fort, so I won't be able to get any until the summer hits! The kid is doomed to insanity!

Not quite. All you have to do to prevent a strange mood from ever killing a dwarf is simply forbid an item that is listed as "tasked" in the workshop's inventory. They'll scuttle off to pick up a replacement item, and as their insanity timer is reset every time they add a new item into the workshop, you can effectively cheat the system to keep that little Urist chugging along while you wait for pigtails to grow.

As a bonus, it also seems as though they don't get hungry or thirsty during their laborious creation, so you could ostensibly keep them waiting for years on end if you needed to.

I could be wrong about some of this, but it seems pretty airtight. Most people probably know this, but I figured it'd be worthwhile to post it here in case anyone else doesn't. You could also just use DFHack to add the item, but that's less fun than creating it manually yourself.

Of course there's no subject. Or maybe it should have. IDK.

!Fun! stuff in a random fortress stairwell.

    Posted: 18 Feb 2021 03:43 PM PST

So, I was just minding my business, walking back up a stairwell to leave a dwarven fortress in adventure mode... and I struck !FUN! stuff completely by chance. In the stairwell. The same one I had just gone down in order to recruit my new dwarf buddy. I am both really confused and irritated that I can't mine any of it, even though my adventurer is a legendary miner holding a masterwork steel pick.

Also, it's sinking in that these dwarves dug THROUGH this stuff in order to build the rest of the fortress in the depths below, and never bothered to mine any of it for their own use. It's actually making up the walls of the stairwell, and the odds of that happening can't be very high. Is this some kind of bug, or just a super rare occurrence?
