    Ezum Hairbook, the Traitor King

    Posted: 17 Dec 2020 09:05 PM PST

"Alright damnit, I'll carve ye a tale of my people," the bristly dwarf groused as he drained his goblet, soaking his moustache in foam and eying his companions wearily. "Most folk paint their people up real pretty when they tell their histories because it makes 'em feel strong and safe in their brittle bones." The dwarf stopped, frowning a dour and dismal look at his drained drink. The barkeep nodded her head to indicate she would cure the calamity and began to pour out a fresh beverage. The dwarf licked his moustache in anticipation and continued, "Well, I'm not going to gild garbage and that's what our so-called king Ezum Hairbook is.
"A shocked mutter rippled through the listeners and the word 'treason' could be caught amid the whispers. The old, stern dwarf banged his fist down on the beautiful pomegranate wood table, decorated with eagle leather, and roared, "GARBAGE I SAY!" Then he glared daringly at those crowded closest and slapped his heavy silver mace with the palm of his hand; it smacked a hefty note of menace. "Treason?" he asked now, with a raised, pained inflection. "Nay, truth. My people, the good folk of Bekargeshud, The Dipped Fortress, have longed to recapture our ancient capital: Sibrektost, Salvevise. It was stolen from us by the evil Emoolngo, The Naughty Monsters, in the earliest years.
"The dwarf belched a wry and bitter grunt, "A prophetic name, The Dipped Fortress; for, since our ancient home, Salvevise, was stolen, it has been submerged in the sin and smut of Tozor's hordes. Tozor, the ancient tortoise-lord of Emoolngo, has long since fallen, but never have we reclaimed our lost fortress from the grasp of goblins." A fierceness flared forth in the forge of his eyes and the dwarf challenged any remaining critics, "Perhaps you will tell me that it is not the duty of our King to reclaim our ancient home. It may be that you're right; but if I told you that he had settled in Salvevise whilst it still flies the Blaze of Immortality, those bastards' banner, and has even AIDED the goblins in battle against the humans, what then would you say!? HUH, WHAT THEN?!" By this point, the dwarf had abandoned the idea of justifying his claims reasonably. Irate and incensed by his own tale, he slammed his fist down again and knocked the newly-filled goblet all over himself.
"Bah!" sulked the dwarf, who was not ashamed of his antics; in fact, he was completely unaware of how he possessed, in that moment, an amusing likeness to a baby that has dribbled food all over its front. He tried to dry his dripping tunic with his drenched beard but succeeded only soaking the few remaining dry parts of his person. Heedless, he resumed with a more sedate sourness, "So, if there's any treason to be found it is in the heart of Ezum Hairbook, the Traitor King. He could have settled at any of the thriving fortresses; built a ferocious war-force, stoked up smoking furnaces and reclaimed our home properly, the dwarven way. Instead, he defends the goblin hold over our land. Disgusting. What does that make us, anyway, goblin vassals?" he hissed the final word through sealed teeth.
A human leaned forward from those huddled about and gave the dwarf a hearty pat on the back. With a jovial tone and a winking eye, he replied, "Not at all, my good dwarf, it just means you've got a vacancy for a new king, aye?" The dwarf looked up from the floorboards when he heard the kindly, murderous suggestion. For the first time in months, the dwarf smiled. Sinister it was, and the grin spread slowly over his face, like night over the world.

This short story is inspired by an actual and inexplicable event from my DF playthrough: I always assume that the mountainhome (the capital site of my civ) is wherever the monarch lives. Well, my monarch, King Hairbook, has indeed recently settled in one of our ancient sites, which is currently owned by a goblin civ. He has even gone so far as to defend the goblin's site from civs we are generally friendly with. So, I decided to justify it for my head-canon through the medium of prose. I hope you enjoyed this snippet. :)

P.S. If anyone has any idea why our king has settled at a site not owned by our civ, I would love to hear theories. Perhaps the reddit can solve the mystery :D
