    is this supposed to happen

I have never seen this before. Is this a bug or did the goddess of mountains really materialized just to pretend to be a bard

This is what a fully legendary force with good tactics can do..... we finished the fight against our Civ's oldest foe.

    Dwarf name checks out

    Posted: 07 May 2020 03:06 AM PDT

I recently had a fortress where a migrant dwarf brought his Fish Dissection skill with him. His last name was 'Tunakil'. My sons and I had a chuckle over the irony of that name paired with that skill.

Have your fortresses had any ironic dwarf names?

A little bit of HFS !!SCIENCE!!: adventuring as a clown

    Posted: 06 May 2020 04:06 PM PDT

So, after suffering from an inevitable underground surprise, I wondered - can you play as a demon? Will it be fun? Let's find out!

When trying this, I, naturally, ran into an obstacle: demons can't be reasoned with. You dig, they attack. The only different ones are the goblin civ's demons, but hey - they are domesticated after you invoke their name, and generally uninteresting. I am unsure if they even join your party when you bind them to you.

First thing I thought was using a necromancer. Goblins and undead are friendly to them, and don't attack on first sight. But when I was selecting the race of my adventurer I saw something far more promising - and "intelligent undead" race, called "Demon of Searedcovered". I instantly thought - maybe they are the answer? I mean - both are named "demons", so they must be related... somehow, at least. (boy, was I wrong)

And thus began my journey to the underground spire. I will spare you the details of my painful 3 FPS journey through the goblin pits. Here is the bottom level of the spire:

And the exit to the HFS area (note the eerie caverns):

Long story short: I walked only about for 10 IRL minutes, and run into three clowns at once, and they instantly attacked me, not even saying a word.

Now, my tale would end here, with my adventurer dead and torn to shreds, but I had a final idea to test out: dfhack's bodyswap script. I resurrected my adventurer, using resurrect-adv, selected the demon (called "soot devil"), and used bodyswap, right after setting my adventurer to jump into the "eerie cavern":

Right away there are some strange things in the demon's head:

Everything makes sense, except - arguments? What?

    BTW, here are its skills:

The demon has no abilities whatsoever, and cannot even read or write:

And also strangely has vision loss:

I tries to talk to the other two clowns, and they even exchanged names with me:

As they have no profession, DF seems to automatically assign them the "peasant" profession. They also seem to acknowledge the death around them:

They laugh at jokes, although seem not to understand the underworld very well:

Their family lists only them, as the family's head:

A little bit of demon logic:

Funny enough, I did not know my name, as menu said "Nameless" on the bottom left corner. After some time I finally obtained a name:

I even managed to convince one of the clowns to join me, but after I escaped the underworld via teleporting away he couldn't follow.

Flying away from the dark fortress:

So, how's life for a demon that escaped the underworld?

    a) everybody hates you:

    b) yes, even the goblins:

Because of this, you can never retire at any location. Even if you claim some land you can't retire for some reason. So, there goes my idea of inserting my adventurer into histfigs to create a new one with the demon race selected. Oh well.

Next, I decided to become a necromancer and made the terrible error to fly over an ocean:

...only to discover I forgot that I can't read. What's even more disappointing, even when I set my READING skill to novice and finally read the secrets of life and death - nothing happenned. I guess it was inevitable.

The only thing left is find a way to retire my adventurer to allow clown race creation.

UPDATE: I managed to retire him. Thanks dfhack. I changed mode to arena, then - to fortress and then retired it. Now I can retire at my spawn location.

    Dwarven Drop Troopers

    Posted: 06 May 2020 07:26 PM PDT

Tonight I embarked on a project I've been wanting to try for a while. I noticed that dwarves falling from only a Z-level or two are generally stunned for a few moments, and then get right back up and keep going. So I figured that if I packed a squad of dwarves onto a stone platform and dropped said platform onto the baddies, it would be the start of some good fun.

Problem is, I can't figure out how to get the dwarves onto the platforms in a timely fashion. I currently have five 5X5 platforms held up by a support in the middle. I had a staircase next to the support, but realized that the staircase would count as geography and the platform wouldn't fall when I pulled the lever and triggered the supports. I thought about eliminating the "down" stair, as dwarves seem to be able to climb up a ramp-only ledge, but that didn't work either, and just left them stranded. I guess I could put a retracting bridge above the platforms and drop the dwarves onto the platforms right before battle, but I'm hoping there's a simpler and more elegant way.
