Now this is appropriate! (Took me ages of chaining law-breakers in the temple, next to a statue of the god.)

    The Downfall of Dragonpants

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 03:43 PM PST

Just got back into DF after a long time, found this subreddit, and decided I'd like to share the FUN way that my first fortress ended back when I was learning to play. It wasn't anything epic-- no megabeasts, no elf wars, no clowns-- but it was tragically stupid and incredibly entertaining.

"Dragonpants the Doomed First Domiciles" was the very first fort I ever ran. I named it that on purpose; I was fully expecting to be taken down by something fairly quickly, but I didn't realize just how fast it would be. I had a bit of a leg up from watching a lot of DF youtubers and streamers, but there was still a lot I didn't know. The only mason had gone into a Strange Mood and I was trying to figure out what he needed before he went off the deep end when I got the notification that SOMETHING was killing the Human trade caravan and our broker had been found dead.

After pausing, much head scratching, and reading through combat logs, this is what happened, to the best that I could figure out:
    - Our only hunter is out of the fort with our only weapon-- his crossbow-- harrassing the wildlife. He decides to try to hunt wild boars for some reason. There are easier things to hunt, but no. He wants to hunt motherfucking boars.
    - Hunter shoots a boar in the butt with the last of his bolts, failing to kill the boar but succeeding in royally pissing it off. This boar and like 5 of his friends get triggered and charge the hunter.
    - Urist McDumbass realizes he's made A Rather Poor Decision, and flees back to the fortress, angry boar army in hot pursuit. He passes the trade depot on the way, where the humans are unloading their goods.
    - I dunno what it was with this particular boar. Maybe he was the Avatar of Armok Himself and thirsted for blood. But he proceeded to go on an unstoppable rampage, killing the caravan guards, their dogs, MY dogs, and the poor hapless Broker.

After coming to understand the situation, I was pretty sure Dragonpants was Pretty Much Fucked. The hunter had fled to the deepest point in the mines, still with the only weapon. I didn't know the first thing about setting up a military, or how to make more bolts, much less have the workshop built to make said bolts, or any other weapon. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have mattered anyway, since the armed caravan guards were getting demolished by the ArmokBoar and his buddies. My squishy dorfs had no chance. I could have retired the fort right there, but that didn't seem very entertaining or FUN. So I decided to just watch it all play out.

What followed was pretty much predictable and very, very bloody. A miner managed to kill one of the boars-- already very wounded from taking on literally every dog in the region and winning-- with his pick before he was pulped. The rest of the dwarves ganged up on another boar and almost killed it, but there were still more boars. It was a hopeless battle, a futile struggle for life. One cannot fault their bravery. Only the results. May they all drink in Dwarfhalla.

... All except Urist McDumbass, that is. Despite being the idiot that triggered all of this shit, he was the last one to die, hiding like a coward in the bottom of the mines.

    Some expanded fancy dorms

I liked the look of a dorm layout posted by u/swampthingOG here a couple weeks ago (https://www.reddit.com/r/dwarffortress/comments/dwpy2p/some_fancy_dorms/), so I was inspired to expand upon it. I made NS/EW versions (defined by staircase access) that wrap around the EW/NS sides, and am almost happy with a version for noble (and/or favorite dwarf) quarters. I tried to stick with the theme as much as I could. There is some dead space in the center of the non-noble floors that can easily be made to accommodate a few nicer quarters.

Note: These stack nicely directly on top of one another (u/d stairs provide inter-floor access as well), however it is recommended to leave a blank floor above noble quarters to provide room for proper magma venting. Don't want those Very Important Dwarves getting too cold!

Pictures in the following album. Apologies that these are screenshots rendered in another game (Excel). Still putting my next fort together and digging has not yet commenced. Hopefully including schematic CSVs will be enough to counteract any negative thoughts from viewing these disturbing images.
