Posted: 04 Dec 2019 03:43 PM PST Just got back into DF after a long time, found this subreddit, and decided I'd like to share the FUN way that my first fortress ended back when I was learning to play. It wasn't anything epic-- no megabeasts, no elf wars, no clowns-- but it was tragically stupid and incredibly entertaining. "Dragonpants the Doomed First Domiciles" was the very first fort I ever ran. I named it that on purpose; I was fully expecting to be taken down by something fairly quickly, but I didn't realize just how fast it would be. I had a bit of a leg up from watching a lot of DF youtubers and streamers, but there was still a lot I didn't know. The only mason had gone into a Strange Mood and I was trying to figure out what he needed before he went off the deep end when I got the notification that SOMETHING was killing the Human trade caravan and our broker had been found dead. After pausing, much head scratching, and reading through combat logs, this is what happened, to the best that I could figure out: After coming to understand the situation, I was pretty sure Dragonpants was Pretty Much Fucked. The hunter had fled to the deepest point in the mines, still with the only weapon. I didn't know the first thing about setting up a military, or how to make more bolts, much less have the workshop built to make said bolts, or any other weapon. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have mattered anyway, since the armed caravan guards were getting demolished by the ArmokBoar and his buddies. My squishy dorfs had no chance. I could have retired the fort right there, but that didn't seem very entertaining or FUN. So I decided to just watch it all play out. What followed was pretty much predictable and very, very bloody. A miner managed to kill one of the boars-- already very wounded from taking on literally every dog in the region and winning-- with his pick before he was pulped. The rest of the dwarves ganged up on another boar and almost killed it, but there were still more boars. It was a hopeless battle, a futile struggle for life. One cannot fault their bravery. Only the results. May they all drink in Dwarfhalla. ... All except Urist McDumbass, that is. Despite being the idiot that triggered all of this shit, he was the last one to die, hiding like a coward in the bottom of the mines. [link] [comments] | ||
