    Posted: 05 Oct 2019 05:06 PM PDT

Ask about anything related to Dwarf Fortress - including the game, utilities, bugs, problems you're having, mods, etc. You will get fast and friendly responses in this thread.

Read the sidebar before posting! It has information on a range of game packages for new players, and links to all the best tutorials and quick-start guides. If you have read it and that hasn't helped, mention that!

You should also take five minutes to search the wiki - if tutorials or the quickstart guide can't help, it usually has the information you're after. You can find the previous questions thread here.

If you can answer questions, please sort by new and lend a hand - linking to a helpful resource (eg wiki page) is fine.

    Minecart discussion.

    Posted: 06 Oct 2019 07:51 AM PDT

I've been trying to use Minecarts, and generally its good for regularly sending items from specific locations to other specific locations. I'll make a carpentry/wood burning work shop and I use the minecarts to send ash and charcoal to where it's needed. lately I've been avoiding quantum stock piling things and setting a low dwarf limit because it helps me understand the supply chains better.

Dwarves were not made for the surface

    Posted: 05 Oct 2019 01:14 PM PDT

I decided to try my hand at a surface fort. After a few false starts, I kept finding myself unable to avoid perpetual low moods and tantrum spirals. The cause? Rain. Not the beasts hiding in the trees, not goblinite mining injuries, not booze shortages. The god damned rain. My legendary craftsdwarf? Got depressed and died because of too much rain. The children? Worn and haggard because of the rain.

At first this seemed stupid, but the more I thought about it the more sense it made. Dwarves are, after all, a subterranian people, and water unexpectedly falling from above is a warning that the tunnel could flood. I can only assume that the rain triggers some sort of innate fear response in dwarves, developed to protect them from aquifers and accidentially breaching bodies of water. I shall therefore abandon my foolish attempts to make dwarves live above ground, and my next fort shall be build as close to the !!fun!! as physically possible.

Giving mushrooms a better use in adventurer

    Posted: 05 Oct 2019 08:39 PM PDT

Being a Dwarf in adventurer mode is honestly my favourite way to play. I love building cabins in the woods far away from society, and just living there. However, I recently have been visiting nearby villages and just relieving them of bags with plump helmets, and now have about 20,000 inside of my house. Despite being a dwarf, you're not actually capable of converting these sweet mushrooms into a more succulent drink, like in Dwarf Fortress mode. Idk how to request features or anything, but any tips on how I can actually make these into alcoholic beverages for the time being? My good Dwarf, Solon Wheelwishes, would love just one more drink of plump helmet wine. Cheers fellow dwarves and skál fyrir!

    Survived a Fall

    Posted: 05 Oct 2019 06:55 PM PDT

So, I tried my hand at assaulting a Dark Fortress in adventure mode. It was awful and horrible; I loved it. Not knowing much about the layout of the average Dark Fortress, I got lost exploring and found myself in the beak dog pits. In the process of fighting them, I forgot to turn off auto-dodge and dodged into a 20 z-level hole and landed in a cavern layer. Astonishingly, I survived with naught but a few bruises.

I don't know how I survived. I am thinking it was the points I put into swimmer and climber at character creation. I know those are supremely difficult to level up. Whatever it was, I had a heck of a time getting back up. I was able to climb up the rock wall while fighting trolls. I slipped and fell a few z-levels a couple times, but was able to catch myself. It was pretty epic.

    Nice cage you got there...

This is the first time I've seen anything masterwork come from a trade caravan.

Apparently the humans in my world figured I'd be interested in a well-decorated nickel cage.

Has anyone else gotten a masterwork from a trade caravan? Was it worth the buy?

df is fun but doing elf racism is boring

    Posted: 06 Oct 2019 07:46 AM PDT

elf ambushes are not fun. forget to set up textiles? no problem, the elfs have some clothes to sell. Want to eat a unicorn? Elfs will sell you one. But what about trees? Orientalists complain about people eating dog. in conclusion elfs are racist to dwarfs. do not reply to this post with legolas as the merchantman. do not create racial epithets in the comments. do not call me an sjw or a virtual signaler because elf racism as a joke got old. Want more war? do it to humans, they got bad armor and bad clothes, they actually are fun and the other kind of !FUN! idk but this shit is lame. live your life, go outside, enjoy existing for once.
