The dwarfs are down to their last few settlements of their last civilisation, and we've been doing nothing but pottering on the other side of the mountain range. Time to gear up and accept some refugees. New goal: let's save our dying civilisation!

A Pitch for a (Modded) Commmunity Game?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2020 10:11 AM PST

Hello fellow McUrists of the Dwarf Fortress Community.

This is a pitch for A modded Community game. So there is this amazing mod made by the prolific Bay 12 Forums user Squamous called After The End, which sets the game into the far future where earth has been ravaged by races of biomechanical monstrosities. It is an AMAZING mod and I enjoyed playing this mod for quite a while but then I wanted MORE! So, I added more randomly generated creatures which turned the setting into this weird post-apocalyptic techno-fantasy inspired barrage of weirdness. I wanted to know if anyone would be interested in playing a community game set in a world like this?

Now why I say Community game and not a community fortress is because I came across a gem of a community game in the good ol' Bay 12 forums called the Museum Adventure Game which I wanted to base the rules of the community game on. The rules are simple:

The game is centered around a museum. The idea is that adventurers are going to fill it with artifacts and treasure that they collect from all over the world. When it's your turn your adventurer has one (real time) week to collect an item and bring it to the museum or die trying. To keep things interesting there's something extra: if you die early, or if you manage to collect an item well ahead of schedule you can use the rest of your week to (secretly) build a fortress, for future adventurers to adventure in

Although we may not necessarily play a different version of the museum, I really like the idea of having the choice of either running a fort or an adventurer because either ways, players are making tangible marks on the generated world and these stories have the potential to intermingle and form something unique!

The Dwarf Fortress community is AMAZING in the way that people here make stories out of watching essentially what are ASCII characters move on the screen and was hoping that together we could tell an epic story of a world that is everyone is trying to figure out together.

The tales of Guildauthored The Ageless Mint

So here i am, setting up a new fortress. things are going smoothly, i'm making some steel battleaxes for my dwarves. i managed to embark on a map that has a waterfall streaming into a split river(See image). All my usual fortifications are set up, and lo and behold a Werepanther shows up.

"Egads!" I think. "Guards! After them!" not a moment too soon, it ends up on the north bridge, battling the guards, and a few dwarves looking for some FUN. it ends up tumbling down with a dwarf to the bottom of the ravine. "Alas, poor Nil Tumbisek. I knew thee well."

"Hold up, they're... following it? they're jumping down. they're... jumping down. The whole squad. at least bring a rope! ;_;"

And thus, dear reader, the first defense squad was lost. and a goblin werepanther was trapped on the side of the ravine.

Preserving Materials from being used in Artifacts

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 02:21 PM PST

Has your dwarf grabbed something precious to make into their latest arts and crafts project? Those last few bars of steel or adamantine, perhaps? Maybe some coke or flux stone? Well now we have an answer.

While playing today, I had a dwarf enter a mood. I was too late to forbid the wafers of adamantine, so the grabbed one. In a last ditch effort to preserve it, I forbid the wafer in the workshop. I had done this after the dwarf starting working. I then unforbid it, and then marked it for dumping to remove it from the workshop. This caused another dwarf to grab it from under the working dwarf's nose, and dump it a few feet away. The finished artifact did not include the adamantine either. Just a neat trick that people might need to use in emergencies.

Has anyone made non co-op multiplayer a thing

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 01:40 PM PST

Im wanting to play df with other people but the only ways i have seen to do it has everyone managing the same fortress and I am wondering if it is possible to have a multiplayer game where each player controls their own fortress and playing in a more competative way where they compete for influence and building up their fortressses independantly but still in the same world where they are effected by each other directly due to how they effect other places.
