Big tip that's been saving my forts from FPS death

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 07:17 AM PDT

On occasion, my men will get stuck in trees. Usually it's guys I send out on missions, but sometimes its workers and the like as well. Just one guy stuck in a tree absolutely DEMOLISHES FPS in my experience, like... I'm talking 100+ FPS to 15.

If you guys are having FPS issues, make sure nobody is stuck in a tree. I thought I was getting too many people, but it turns out this was the issue.

I Managed To Turn Goblin Dark Pits Into Tower Defense Game By Accident

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 11:46 AM PDT

Praise The Adams Brothers! Praise The Armok! Praise this game! Praise vampire curse!

So I attacked the pits with about 20 goblins on average when it comes to rooftops maybe more actually. Night was starting. I wanted to stop a group of travelling goblins from entering underground. More and more arrived countlessly. It seems like I found the spot where they gather when the night falls. I was hammering goblin after goblin. There were so many of them that when my hammer didn't kill one and he felt over I just let him suffocate because more were coming. For some reason my character began to move away from the stairs. Combat logs didn't mention anything about attacks. Goblins who felt over acted as a barrier so I couldn't get to stairs and stop everyone. I started jumping and it was super effective. I prioritized to target goblins who were moving downwards than those who were moving north or west. I was able to instakill several of them in a row. Maybe my record is 6 but that might be too high. My vampire curse made me resistant to exertion and I had a hell ton of strength. I haven't even finished the slaughter because of how long it lasts so I wrote this in the middle of !!FUN!!. Some of the goblins managed to get through my defense or run away but I will follow them into they're lair and murder them.

Funny coincidence: When I quit the game the title screens said "histories of greed and tenacity". You know I was GREED on my kill counter to be the highest possible and DETERMINED enough to keep smashing.

I just figured out that my character was switching positions because goblins were walking straight into me. Time to stand directly on stairs but the tiles from which I can hit them will lower. Nah, It won't matter. They will keep walking into me. I just strike goblins moving northwest.

Happy Halloween to the Dwarf Fortress Community!

Short & Sweet - Happy Halloween

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 08:19 AM PDT

First time player, slaughtered ruthlessly by a necromancer army, enjoy the read!

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 06:21 PM PDT

    Hi all,

    To preface a short story of my experience of Dwarf Fortress so far;

    I dabbled in dwarf fortress briefly to figure out the buttons before taking my steps into streaming the game for the entertainment of viewers. So I've had a couple of runs on stream getting to grips remembering a few of the commands and generally trying to create a basic functional fortress. Now, i'm only 30% through this process, it currently goes something like this;

    - Build into wall and pretend im making the Mines of Moria

    - Get most useful things stolen by Keas >:((((((((((((

    - Get extremely obsessed with pretty patterns + layouts for the fortress

    - Forget the PLUMP HELMETS (the ones that chat keep reminding me to put down) but I must fix those circles so they look good!!!!

    - start to live off an insane obsessed fisherman who will do nothing but fish until blue in the face

    - Panic and gather seeds to brew alcohol

    - Make poor attempts and making stuff using various workstations based on the metal I find

    - ???

    - DEATH

Except I normally get to the ??? Part. Now my chat has been extremely helpful in talking through different things I should do and correct practices for preparing my ultimate fortress, but NOTHING could have prepared me for the SEIGE.

    ___

    THE SIEGE

As aforementioned, I was part of the way through my regular process, exceedingly inefficient but looked good so it's ok! Then suddenly -SIEGE WARNING- I have no idea what's going on so I ask chat what's the best thing to do; they suggested building a burrow inside the fortress so the dwarves will all run inside. I do so and follow the instructions, Luckily I made some drawbridges with functional levers! so we have a 2 door system locking us away from those horrible undead.

Now, what I wasn't expecting for one, was a combination of 33 undead elves, dwarves and humans, commanded by a female necromancer to show up, as they filter onto my screen one by one, I'm panicked but know my dwarves are safe inside their newly found base. I've been smart enough to create a stockpile inside of wood + food. Huzzah, we're 40 strong, I have around 800 items that constitute in the food menu and around 50 pieces of wood. Excellent. Now, I let the dwarves do whatever they want, since they're safe. the LEGENDARY weaponsmith (who's name now escapes me but I will be doing art of him) ((see profile for art)) (((art will be streamed))) continues to smelt iron bars and craft weapons. I have NO IDEA how the military system works and so I have NO MILITARY units at this point. :))))))) but he will perpetually create bars and hammer some of them into armor + spears because that's what he's born to do. The rest of the dwarves spend a lot of time fornicating and popping out children left right and center. The population is climbing but for some reason the miners in my group will not mine out the new areas I designated for extra bedrooms, so I guess that the kids can sleep on the sandy floor of the half-finished dining area. Meanwhile, a couple dwarves are dying inside and i'm not even sure why. Soon after, they decide to become ghostly and haunt the beautiful fortress I spent the last 5 hours putting together. (at this point chat tells me to make coffins) Now, we manage to put some of the dead into coffins but run out of wood + rock in the process, the dwarves are still to busy fornicating to make mine for more rocks to make more..

Outside, during all this, the 33 strong undead army and a lightning-fast necromancer and doing loops around my heavily forested wonderland, around the lake chasing wild emus. The necromancer darts at them at the speed of sound (sonic boom not included) and eventually decimates any foolish enough to circle near him. (this went on for about 1 hr) The occasional mountain goat pops up which is also being chased, similarly see special guest Skunk and Kiwi Bird, also chased and ripped to shreds. There's also an EPIC undead dwarf whos yeeting javelins around destroying random wildlife, top tier stuff. Previous olympic thrower (probably). Meanwhile inside, supplies are runing out, it's been like 6 months and im thinking, when do these guys piss off so I can open the gates. The people are getting thirsty. Children are dying of dehydration moments after flying out the wombs of continuously impregnated female dwarves.. I have no idea how to resolve these problems.

Finally, the food supplies run dry, people are starving, everyones piled inside the food storage room brawling over what seeds they can get their crummy hands on. Chat calls it, they say 'open the gates, it's over.' The undead army still chasing the fastest kiwi bird the west has ever seen outside. I concede and open the gates. My dwarves rush out en masse to the water for one last drink, only to be mowed down by the most efficient undead army, spraying blood all over the fortress, a glorious bloodbath. 2 epic dwarves make it out and run up the hills, continuously marched down by the endless scourge, ghosts flying around the fortress, an epic sight.

Finally, the last 2 dwarves worn down, annihilated by the necromancer's army.

and now I have to start again... but god damn i'm gnna make some cool art for this!

I hope you enjoyed this read even 5% as much as the experience I just had. I felt I had to type it whilst it was fresh in my mind. :) Any tips for surviving a 30 strong undead army would be excellent.. We were 40 strong and completely unprepared. :D

First (big) Adventure: Forgotten beast + Invasion

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 02:36 AM PDT

    Hi.

After a long time of watching tutorials and reddit posts on getting into df, I finally started playing a week ago. Had a temperate embark, and things were going well till 2 or 3 caravans.

Then I decided to try magma stuff, so created a dug through to the magma sea. Encountered 2 caverns, but nothing fun happened during the digging.

Then enters the forgotten beast: a walking fire breathing beast. It was wandering in the cavern, and I sent 2 squads (metal armour) to take care of it. They got slaughtered in minutes. Then the beast decided to visit the fortress.

At this very time, a goblin invasion started in our fortress: trolls, war dogs, nasty little goblins. The beast was just killing everyone on its sight (70-80% dwarven population killed). The goblins attacked the beast as well, so it changed its target and started killing the invaders.

The beast moved outside of the fort to kill all targets. Since it was breathing fire, everything was set on fire. This entirely killed the invaders, and it itself got killed in the fire.

Now I have a fortress with lots of dead dwarves, some dead goblins and very little alive but horrified dwarves. A migrant wave may be able to sustain this fort, but I am not very hopeful.

Time to strike the earth again, I guess.

TL; DR: Fire breathing forgotten beast reaches fort, kills goblin invasion and dies in the process.

Thirty-Eight Days of Dwarf: Day 30 (Extra Life 2020!) 7pm EDT!

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 03:43 PM PDT

(TWO FUNCTION WATER TRAP? YES WE SHALL!)

    ----------------------------------------Who's this guy?----------------------------------------

    Hey guys!

I'm /u/Nameless_Archon, and I provide tutorials on how to play Dwarf Fortress every year (health permitting) while I try to raise money for sick kids.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What in the name of the glowing pits is this about?

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is time to return to our roots, and so we shall: Thirty. Eight. Days. Of. Dwarf.

Starting on 10/1 and proceeding through the Extra Life 2019 Game Day event on 11/7, I'm going to stream and teach what little I know.

    Dwarves. Every. Single. Day.

    ----------------------------------------But why?----------------------------------------

I like to do things when there's more than one reason to do them:

    • It's for charity.
    • I get to collect money for the very same hospital that once helped me as a child.
    • I like to teach, or at least I have in the past when my health has allowed it.
    • It's for charity.
    • People (crazy people, apparently) like my stream, when I do it.
    • People are always complaining that Dwarf Fortress is hard to learn. (Not really, but let's show it.)
    • It's for charity.
    • It raises the profile of Dwarf Fortress, a game I regard as a seminal work and personally enjoy.

-------------------------So how's this going to work?-------------------------

We've started out like I usually do - streaming a basic, sustainable fortress. However, the reality of the situation is that thirty-three days of Basic Base Building 101 is going to probably bore the pants off people (including me) and I don't really want things to be boring. So we're going to have to do a few things along the way to try to spice things up, and along the way likely reveal that I'm just an average player like everyone else. (Dwarves dying of starvation and frostbite on a glacier? Likelier than you think!)

Basically, I'll stream in the evenings most days for a few hours. On Saturdays and Sundays, we'll generally run a little longer, but I'm going to stream every day until 11/7 even if it means I have to get up at 3am to do it. On 11/7, we're going to culminate with a 24-hour long livestream, as part of the worldwide Extra Life charity event.

I don't use Twitter, Facebook, etc. and people may want to donate to Extra Life 2020, even if they're not supporting my efforts directly. Feel free to share my donations link, or to direct people to the charity's main page.

--------------------------So what's in it for viewers?---------------------------

Well, aside from helping to support my local children's hospital (good vibes, ho!) I'll be pushing out tutorial game(s) live on stream as part of the event. Your donations are a spur in that direction applied to my backside. You can even attend the event with me, since I'll be broadcasting live on my stream the whole time!

...but if that's not enough for you?

    • There's a callout for donations so everyone can see your generosity!

Anonymous or not, everyone will know you're supporting kids that need it.

    • Donate $10 or more and you may request to have a dwarf named in current and future forts!

If you're not naming him something awful, it'll even happen. You're welcome to request a trade for the dwarf, if I have one suitable to match it! If we run more than one fort, donator dwarves will show up in all forts after the one where you donated!

SEVERAL DONATORS HAVE CLAIMED A NAMED MIGRANT FOR ALL 38 DAYS. Are you next?

    • For $25 or more, you can reserve one of the starting seven instead of a.. <.< >.> ...migrant.

If none are available, I'll have to use a migrant. (We call this 'Early cat catches the dwarf'. Move fast.) As above, if you donate on the first fort of our event, we'll put that same dwarf into the starting seven every fort thereafter!

SOME OF THE STARTING SEVEN HAVE ALREADY BEEN CLAIMED! Will yours be next?

    • For a donation of $100, I'll let you flip the script for a bit.

Want me to embark on a reanimating evil biome with a necromancer next door? It's your call. I'll save the current stream fort, and start a new one on the spot with settings as close to your request as I can manage on the fly, and run with it until it dies or I do. If someone else flips the script on you before I finish, you can either donate again to flip if back or wait for their fort to exhaust before I resume yours. Your choice. (We call this one 'Last dwarf gets the sock.')

    • Feeling your oats? If you're willing to drop $500, I'll let you flip the whole table and pick the game I'm playing!

Some limits on this are required for sanity's sake. Let's talk first.

At some point, I'll get back to the stream fort, but for a truly generous donation, I'm 100% willing to give up some time and show off anything you'd like, live and on the spot. You can find a link to my Steam profile (which contains a list of potential games I could probably get set up for streaming) here if you're considering this. (And if it's something we can do multiplayer, we can even try that too, which would be a stream first.)

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wait....Thirty days of tutorials for Dwarf Fortress as part of a charity drive?

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thirty-eight days, actually. It was the wife's idea - she suggested that you folks might like to get a newer version of my original tutorial, and that this might be a good avenue to combine hardcore Dwarf Fortress fanatics, who are already a generous and supporting community, with a charitable cause to support. I didn't have much luck finding a flaw in her reasoning, so I bit the bullet and advertised it at work, too, despite my trepidation regarding drawing personal attention there. (Last year, they contributed only a sixth of our total collection, because the players and viewers - people like you and I - were far more generous!)

------------------------- New and Uncertain Players: ----------------------

We'll be putting the newest version of the starter pack and Dwarf Fortress through its paces as we (attempt to) start a new tutorial series for v 0.47.04. (Note: If there's an update and it seems relatively bug free, I'll try for the newer version, but I'm aiming this at newer players, so trying to ride the cutting edge isn't really in the cards.)

Past demonstrations (From v.34 to present) have included glaciers, deserts, sites with necromancer towers adjacent (like Day 1 this year...) as well as discussion on how to influence worldgen to get what you want. Our first one will be a more sedate embark, designed and chosen for relatively newer players, and we'll start with worldgen as though we're looking at a fresh install.

    Goal:

My goal for "Tutorial Night" is to walk new players through an embark using the DF Starter Pack. (Explicit thanks to /u/PeridexisErrant and others who I admire for their dedication, which is studded with perseverance and ringed with bands of my gratitude! Without those efforts, a tutorial for installing and configuring everything for the game and its add-ons would be a sizable task unto itself. I've actually devoted many hours of stream to demonstrating it 'the hard way'!)

Along the way, I'll provide examples of the setup and tools I use to play Dwarf Fortress, as a guidepost for new players.

What I'm really trying to do is give new players a reference point they can come back to on how to set up a world, embark on a site, and stand a reasonable chance of employing a fairly basic and standard design to build a workable fortress wherever they may need to start one.

    Stream Info:

The channel rules are simple: Respect Wheaton's Law and you'll be fine. Just don't expect the content of the broadcast to be 100% suitable for children; Sorry, kids. I'm much too low-brow for a guaranteed clean broadcast. Get your parents' permission, etc etc.

If you have questions you might like answered with a demonstration, and not simply a quick post in the weekly questions thread, I'm your guy. I'll do my best to demonstrate just about anything you can think up - aquifers, megaprojects and magma pistons aside. (Minecarts may get covered, but don't expect anything computational or timer based - I'm a casual player, not a dwarven mechanical engineer.)

You can view the stream here, as well as on the donations page for Extra Life.

    Later Goals:

At some point in this fortress, I'll walk players through my 'most commonly used' tools in DFHack and in the utilities that come packaged in the DF Starter Pack and how I use them to construct a simple, basic, and tightly run fortress that can support as many dwarves as my PC can haul, defend itself against all comers, and handle just about anything. I also will demonstrate Quickfort at some point for those who've never taken advantage of it!

We'll certainly touch on Dwarf Therapist, and discuss how I use it to control the behavior and organization of my ants dwarves, including a demonstration of custom professions in action. Sound will be provided by Soundsense so that you're not listening to me play in silence during any lulls, and the off-topic interaction between the audience and myself tends toward the lively (and often ribald).

New players, your questions (no matter how 'silly' you may think they are) are 100% welcome, as they're the whole point to the broadcast! Join us and ask them!

If you can't make it (or are not willing to brave my often vulgar displays of unsuitability) and still have questions you can't seem to figure out, post them in the DF Bi-Weekly Questions Thread for this week and I'll do my best to help you overcome your obstacles, if the expert players haven't gotten there first!

(Obligatory: Yesss... Join usss... Join the Dark Side... We have cookies!)

    ------------------------ More advanced players: ------------------------------

On that note, experienced players who want to follow along are certainly welcome (and often manage to teach me a thing or two, directly or not) but the main thrust of the stream will be to help new players get over the introductory hump to start playing at a deeper level, so you may find yourself paying less attention to the pace of the stream and more attention to your fellow audience members. I do love having a few veterans show up, though, because my fortress designs always get better when I'm shown a method I've never used!

    --------------------------------Parting Words----------------------------------------

Please don't go. The children need you.

Please donate if you are able.

On behalf of Riley and Extra Life: Thank you, in advance, for your generosity!

    ----------------------------------------Progress Readout---------------------------

    1. Pre-Broadcast: Completed. You're reading it. You could have read it before this, but I'm lazy and I'm blaming the Automod, since that was the real reason one time a few years ago. Don't tell anyone.
    2. Thirty-Eight Days of Dwarf: This is tonight from 7pm-10pm EDT! Within 14 days, the VOD will still be up at Twitch (-link pending-) but after that, you'll need to wait for a Youtube upload, which may take some time.
    3. Day 30 Youtube Upload ( -link pending- ) is pending broadcast completion!

Special thanks to this year's donators!

    - Clinodev (!) - still wants a wax worker!

    - Valdimar (!) - randomly selected for engraving and spelunking, depending on the whims of fate! Now with apprentices!

    - Estacaco

    - Marshall DK (!)

    - Veliq (!)

    - Sicarius (!) - a mason, and now a priest!

We're also 82% of the way to our initial goal, and just a little over halfway to our stretch goal of breaking our previous record!

    THANK YOU TO THE GENEROUS!

    ---------------------------------- Fortresses To Date ------------------------------

    • Tossidur Berim (The Armored Fist of Artifice): Succumbed to "necromancer guest bug". (Bug: Necromancers are treated as guests, and can walk right in over the traps in 47.04, then bring their minions into the fort for fun too. Whooooops.) Necromancers are now, unfortunately, disabled. I do not like it, but I ain't going to lose fort after fort to them: I'm a gamer, not a professional masochist.
    • IronPrice: Retired peacefully as an archived save now that tree farm and magma workshop demos are done.
