My second migrant wave had a dwarf who killed 9 necromancers

My buddy said games are too easy... he's in for it

    Posted: 20 Feb 2020 10:40 AM PST

My buddy was lamenting that all the games he plays are too easy, so of course we suggested he play Dwarf Fortress. He decided that to make things extra challenging, he won't google anything or use the wiki in any way.

F in the chat for my boy.

You can watch him stumble through it on twitch here:

Just wanted to see if you have an expected to have your pack released with the new update? The game isnt the same without your little tweaks and fantastic graphics.

Not even a minute into adventure mode. Just a tiny room full of murderous barons.

We raided a necromancer’s tower and took his book on how to raise the dead. Nobody’s actually raised anything yet, but fun is on the horizon.

Burning Dwarven Fortress - RPG campaign inspired by Dwarf Fortress video game

    Posted: 20 Feb 2020 07:50 AM PST

Hello, there! I proudly present my Burning Dwarven Fortress pen'n'paper RPG campaign in form of the reports and associated documents. I managed to tight it out in one convenient link (Google Docs site) that leads to other links-documents. The campaign is on-going and there will be next updates to the Main Site. You can even see three snapshot player character sheets after eight sessions.

BDF campaign is inspired by Dwarf Fortress game, but it uses that inspiration for broad guideline. The Dwarfs are according to Burning Wheel rules - with their Greed, Dwarven Arts and Oath system. But at least you can be proud of that our game inspire somebody to return to RPG hobby from a not-so-short hiatus!

Main Google Site Docs of BDF campaign

Currently we played eight sessions (plus session zero) so far. We concluded "Prologue" of that i-hope-to-be-lenghty campaign and we approach the first major politics event "Inauguration of Lielivarti" (from semi-official outpost to actual root of the fortresss.

The campaign is about three Protagonists founders of the Lielivarti settlement who - according to the King's orders and their own ambitions - they lead the colonial expedition to gain first footstep to tame the wild and dangerous Dreaming Hills. Dwarves are waking up from three thousand years of recover, and some westward human Empire finally awared that behind the mountain range there is a convenient place to settle too!

We play on Burning Wheel roleplaying game: medieval fantasy custom setting with a games that is about fighting for your beliefs. You state your Intent and how you approach it (Task), GM tells you the Conseqences of Failure (if you roll) and Obstacle of a roll, then you roll a dice pool of d6 to check if you achieved enough successes...

And indeed, the campaign itself just uses the "building a fortress" concept as a premise to actually zooming in into three Protagonists. The campaign, the scenarios and the sessions are center-focused on them, their Beliefs, Instincts and Traits!

There is a map of the known surrounding of dwarven kingdom

A fortress conquered by goblins was populated by demons so I recruited them.

This world has somehow entered the Eleventh Age of Legends

Dwarves are dumber than I thought...

    Posted: 19 Feb 2020 03:58 PM PST

So I hear dwarves are really dumb, but this kind of surprised me. I accidently messed up whilst digging around a volcano and flooded the swamp with lava. As the lava was slowly approching this tree designated for chopping. A dwarf decided it would be a great idea to chop it down. While working on chopping the tree, lava coming slowly but surely, he didn't budge and I thought he was going to melt; when it was literally right next to him. But right before it touched him the tree burst into flames and I guess he decided that since the tree was not there anymore, it was not worth standing right next to boiling lava. So he ran away with seconds to spare.

A miner and a sworddwarf just killed my first giant

    Posted: 19 Feb 2020 10:21 PM PST

My miners were digging out a moat around my village when a giantess attacked. She went straight for my miners in the dry moat, specifically my broker/miner. They were about as fast as each other running around the savanna outside my walls. The giantess got a few hits in doing no serious damage , but the miner (who has a steel pick) hit her several times in the legs and foot tearing the muscle each time. Finally the miner fractures her bone and she falls over and the miner gets away.

Now my soldiers are able to catch up and my sworddwarf just mutilates her. She quickly falls unconscious and bleeds to death. My miner is now in hospital with a cut on her back.

What a weak giant, or did i just get lucky?

Is it ethical to play such with such a highly detailed simulation like DF

    Posted: 20 Feb 2020 05:23 AM PST

DF is just about the deepest simulation I've ever seen any where.
I don't need to describe how deep it goes, we all know. So I'll get straight to the point.

Is it ethical to simulate an entire world, with history, wars, people with feelings and so on then just to wipe the world and start over.

Are our dorfs simply philosophical zombies? Are they aware of what happens to them?

Is there a difference between being truly sentient and just being programmed to think you are?

Side note: I just binged on this season of Black Mirror, this seasons theme is how being a simulated being is a horrible existential nightmare. And it made me think alot about my dorfs.

Little nitpick, not too serious, but it's weird that there's no moonshine.

    Posted: 19 Feb 2020 03:07 PM PST

I mean the dorfs can make a type of booze called sunshine. Whatever that is. So why no moonshine?
