    ☼Bi-weekly DF Questions Thread☼

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 04:07 PM PST

Ask about anything related to Dwarf Fortress - including the game, utilities, bugs, problems you're having, mods, etc. You will get fast and friendly responses in this thread.

Read the sidebar before posting! It has information on a range of game packages for new players, and links to all the best tutorials and quick-start guides. If you have read it and that hasn't helped, mention that!

You should also take five minutes to search the wiki - if tutorials or the quickstart guide can't help, it usually has the information you're after. You can find the previous questions thread here.

If you can answer questions, please sort by new and lend a hand - linking to a helpful resource (eg wiki page) is fine.

Track, Roller, Minecart Track, Pressure plate Track, Roller

Is this a common knowledge? Was wondering there is a more compact way of doing this.
This involves a minecart on 3 straight tracks with 2 rollers on each end, and a pressure plate in the middle.
When both the two rollers are toggled to the direction opposite of the minecart, the minecart will go to the other direction, trigger the pressure plate, and the minecart continuously move to the other end in place. This guarantees a single signal to be sent, making it seem like a switch. This reduces the necessity for waiting until the dwarves pull the lever, like by raising a bridge in case of emergency.
Note that the maximum speed for the rollers should be High, but Medium is preferred. Setting the speed to highest doesn't seem to trigger the pressure plate.

Edit: I just learned signals from pressure plates don't last long. There's only 1 and 0 signal. Signal 1 gets sent when a pressure plate activates, then resets to zero when the trigger leaves for a short while. So in order to get a constant 1 signal, the minecart must be sent back and forth meaning the 2 rollers must be opposite each other.
